to places
you are part of
every one – in every way
to dreams
where others sleep alone
I wandered yesterday

to lexington in autumn
endless fields
of winter grain
where friends around me gathered –
seeking refuge from the rain

ribbons kept to letters
nights I read them
one by one
– and listened
as the sirens wailed
into the dying sun

you were there
and I was fearless –
every story bound to mine
with no worry for tomorrow
– or a longing
undefined

of faraway confessions
I’ve forsaken death for love –
was a moment
you were with me –
do you remember where
that was

postmark paradise ~

of roads
without a ways to go
and miles against the heavens –
silver ladles dripping
now with stars

whispers wrapped in reddest clay
and someone waiting
somwhere
with open arms –
another faraway

of stops along
the getting there –
postcards from the journey
a name or two
and someday I won’t care

hands to warm
against my night –
two bucks more than ever
I thought you’d be
returning for me here

dying vines
and twisted rose –
graces saved for leaving
what more
the time to waste
with letting go

were circumstance
for coming back –
across the fields of wanting
to lie against
my restlessness –
and know the ways
I came

pardon the mess
of daydreams and daisies –
journals piled high
on the edge of the couch
coffee too strong
and rings of surrender –
to traces where flicker
a candle burned out

pardon the glare
of light through the window
tore down the curtains
and moved near the bed
propped so the breezes blow
warm through my winters
kept me in secrets –
unsaved for regret

pardon the lack
of plans for tomorrow
last time – the calendar
lost me a year
forgotten the want
to change with the seasons –
no use moving on –
hold me right here

pardon the mess
of something needs cleaning
and where are the jeans
I held out to wear
kiss me –
forever seems nothing
worth trading –
as light crowds the window
with promise to share

of scattered few
a picture book –
and verses understood
was meaning more than e’er
the pen could find

what eloquence decided
by the poet to the page –
rhyme
when none would work
to speak my mind

of messages I left alone
and roads
forever winding –
willed me back into the ways
I was

fragile
as a falling leaf
tender as a tear
wandering o’er seasons
I was love

were not for this
these souvenirs
of mystery and minding
touch almost forgotten
by my skin

saved a place
for every year
breath as breath immortal
here am I –
and getting used
to knowing you
again

silver slash
of copper canyons –
lined with linen
satin sheets
careless carve
of age and water –
blue as cold
the waters sleeve

downward
upward – backward
flowing
washed beneath
these ruby walls
held alone with swishing
sweaters
knitted by the night
to shawl

silent here
the place of gathers
fathers more than years
to save
pushed as luck
below the surface
ashes blown
into the grave

within the quiet
where I live –
as graces known before
autumn spills around me –
leaves are falling sore
to bring me now
into this still
where chilly secrets lay
as something more
than e’er my words could say

a wanderer
to southern winds –
a time of fates aligning
as streams to cross
and rhyme to understand
kentucky wears confession
of the pieces
to my heart –
and gifts the light
within my
soul to you

counted one
the end of me –
chapter twenty nine
as postage worn
reminding you of home
voices of forever
ring within my sound
a laughter seems to echo
now in dreams

dear and dearest
who am I –
and where my truth is come
does mystery await
the seeker find
weaved within these ribbons
of auburn silver
blue –
stars begat
the endless sky
as nights are winking true

ancient ways
of tender ache –
a time of consecration –
became these hands
to pull the night around
bring me to the edge
of sight –
return me now
your longing –
a whisper once
remembers still to come

what is it now
your longing heeds –
chasing milk with whiskey
seen me ’round –
in places I have been

another me
to lost haiku
three five three
no more –
a passing through of wisdoms
alignment with your core

stall the dreams
to feed your story
something someone said
of times you might have waited here
eight long nights
in bed

one more loss
to bust the hinges –
take the night but spare the blame
come the one to know your purpose
as sworn by fate
to wear your name

four more times
ten thousand reasons –
planets split the night with care
tell them all
you wondered far –
forgotten why you tarried
paths don’t seem the same
without me there

north was south ~

the pages
so much fuller now
than e’er my pen could say
and rhyme makes nothing much of sense
before I pull away
tho I for one
without the words
to tell you what that means
I’ll write it down
and leave it as a message
to your dreams

when bent to fate
we made a place –
no one dared believe
would make it through the coming back
another time to leave
as none so sure
the ways to go or when we’d wander home –
north was south
and south intent on letting
love alone

of redbud rest
and night bird nests –
pancakes rolled in butter
and all day long to sit
against the sun
married once
and let it be
the place for coming quickly –
begged me let forever sleep
in faded cotton gowns

of other times
a photograph or two
I cannot find –
black and white are pasted
in the space between the lines
with none to know
so few can tell –
of meant to be just right
as fingers trace
the softest grey –
eyes to hold me tight

I’ll take my chance
and stay the night –
wrapped in silence still
held beneath the rafters
with truth
beyond our will
forgotten every warning
bet you knew my ways
back then –

words were never given us
a place to pass again

of fates undecided
by the moons
of july –
and wishes where
waters we flowed –
backwards returning
and further yet
north –
a frozen reminder
of time passing on

forgotten
the reasons –
for every misstep
and paths without conscious
to lure us away
as prophets forsaken
by promise to love –
for boots
and a bible –
was heaven betrayed

who’s to know
who would listen
were the world
made to hear –
and sworn for release
was music
to make

of another I knew
a truth almost gone
and a flame more
than dark could recall
a whisper dissolved
on the hope of a sigh
and worried
not far –
for the coming
again

I’ve known you awhile
more than nights
without name
or stories I’m sure
to remember –
swirls within letters
beauty disguised –
loops became lust
became love

sweet recognition
of times here before
turning of seasons
with nothing to lose –
reminders
how easy
was loving to breathe –
retelling of stories
once written
of you

of moments
slowed becoming –
as the rising of the sun
ripples spread
to circles
left of dew

was destiny
forgiven –
to the places
I have come
as those to keep aside
with names I love

of frightened birds
forsaken flight –
dark where tears reside
daughters dream
in storybook of lives
they never had

silent as a sin
confessed
of memory set free
and with my own
in heart –
their song to beat

sleep again
in stillness
where innocence befalls
as feathers scored
against a sudden moon

tumble
with divine reproach
longing to the sun
dreaming still the night
of wings on fire
