take of these
my open hands –
arms that held you close
save for life
remembered now –
and love beyond the soul
give me not to contradict
of choices to remain
as sun upon the mountain melts
to rainbows on the plain

as promise made
that I would love –
holds still within my breath
shall find another way to be –
beyond the course of death
betrayed the scourge of innocence
sleep I dare not choose
awake with me
eternally –
as love we shall not lose

there the rarest flower blooms –
from loving thoughts
have burst
blossoms wreath immortal skies
and tary not for thirst
as grace provides for each the same
fulfills their only need –
essence of the love we were
when planted first
the seed

bend me not
with promises
broken by the gate
or pierce my heart
with sonnets –
soundless beak against my bane
answer me with lullabies
and verses still to be
count the days
til coming back
finds no room to leave
linger as a poem
just before the night begins
else I be sworn to longing
and words
to write again

something less ~

pardon this
the ill affair
of marigold to mayfly
trumpets folded softly
to the burning of the day

stay the night
that I might tell
of others long since missing
praises once we sang
now silently oppressed

touch – o please I beg you
touch me with your waking
spin for me a web
of words I never heard

have I no more
to give you
wisdom not to worry
dare we speak of living
as a cup of something less

and sit with jam
as curses fell
denouncing all that was
pretending not
the best we couldn’t see

blue the fingers
morning paper
folded on your knee
anxious eyes to reach
beyond the door

as one unto another
beg me stay
to turn the page
gather now the reasons
for the letting go this way

as flesh to fire
as words to wing –
dam the bloody river
and tell them all
I watched for you always

years before the locust swarm
nights betrayed the fourth
taking back my innocence
holding back the storm

slept before the news was come
of dying on the pasture
wore your name in two
against my skin

now the day is trading
all I meant to tell you then
of centipedes and winters
not as long

of blooms along the eastern ridge
deep the weeds to marry
babies pushed from branches
paint the lonely night

stay if for a moment
heed the waning of your soul
shifted as the moon became
a story I shall tell

seasons still to be ~

one more time
as living goes –
and I’ll be done with dying
come before in satin gowns
feathers are my fare
barefoot on an eastern lake
wilderness and wilder
stars against my shoulder
fell into the weave
and couldn’t go
(the way of mars)
across and back
wandering much further
than the earth was flat
(the promise come)
sail away with me
fingers splayed on lacey lace
playthings for the baby
fit with one (remember me)
lightening coursed within
touching breath
melting fire
burned into a moment
a scar to last forever
and seasons still to be
of all that was
no ‘could have been’
will matter much tomorrow
as brith returns another
without the father’s name
or where we passed
with why we left
though some my heart
is keeping
in boxes lined with cedar
and buried three moons deep
hyacinth and hemlock
weaved into my tresses
evidence of times before
beneath these same
bright stars

three days ~

this is the place
I wished for
something moves upon the wind
and longing
feels no urgency to go
cedar sweats
as knot to knot
grain against the strumming
as white to flash
a covey spills to flight

I am here
within the wonder
the same as shale and story
to fill my blood with love ~
strength that pulls
the pines

let be
this time of loving
let not my words be caught
in harsh regrets
or looking back
to other ways I crossed
to tender paths
I wonder still
what fate awaited there
was given me for choosing
with nothing to compare
let me sit
with this becoming
as destiny unfolds
a brush against
what might have been
a solace to my soul

above a crush
of timber
wings to span the sky
and somewhere close
I hear the river sing
as soft the breeze reminds me
I am home again
this in-between
tho just the same
as hemlock, fir, and myrtle
my roots reach deep
into this place
of love

I know this song
the sound of leaves
whispers still the forest
I close my eyes
and hear the evening tide
a melody remembered
is played again at twilight
once given to the trees
when love befell the dreamer
notes of ash and chestnut
were floated out to sea
I wonder do they miss
the shore
another place they sing

loosen my heart ~

take of my life
the best in concession
lest ever I trade
of heaven my lines
and strip of the blade
a chance for renewal
or walk without thought
for blossoming fair

loosen my heart
as tethered by longing
and set as a dove on the gale –
would ever I live
let me love
through their presence
and breathe of the air
as the ones
that I know

pry from my hands
every start written over
and make for a place
in the wood
stretch every word
to encircle the cedars
til vowels
become years
in the shade

bury me
carry me
feed me to sparrows
long might I live
in the shelf of a wing
dream
where I wake
as a verse rediscovered
familiar my song
as notes to the wind

as silence to watch
from clouds
softly drifting
back to the places
remembered
I love

was a curs’ed design
to suffer unknowing –
would memories come
when thought
they were gone

a song
or a sigh
a word without meaning
but to worlds once created
by some other hand

when tears become rain
and the road
a reminder – of once
we were talking
of where we might go

when leaves cannot fall
without colors
creating –
a glass through which heaven
seemed dull
(that one day)

when shadows
though harmless
hold whispers of something –
late nights
and lifetimes
of stars rarely crossed

lines crease the page
of a map so familiar –
as verses run back cross
our days –

and your name
never quite sounds the same

a curs’ed design
as flame to a vapor –
as breath to the half
we recall

sheets of linen ~

from simple words
another fell – and silence
rose to meet –
ink was spilled
unselfish to the page
as joy returned to season
without ending to erase
bliss was ours
with tears to wash away
the best of these –
a story told
revealed in us a time
of where we were
when then some other day
we fell beyond the margins
creating other lives –
remember this – the choice we made
to leave our strength behind
chapters still unfolding
long after we have gone
will fill the book of silent verse
of lovers by decree –
between these sheets
of linen –
we love eternally

every now and then ~

with the faith of love
returning –
clouds beyond the smoke
and poems someone wrote to me
this way –

of serenades
in mid July –
April now forgotten
cept when the night birds
send the chill to bed

and come the frost
to take of vows –
spinning scarlet
dancers
wrapped in stems of lace –
the latest style

wished upon
a morning star
one night in late November –
tied a secret
to a firefly
and waited for the Spring

coalesce ~

In the stillness left of standing –
dare I will you (come again)
as drenching rains
to save a crop of stone
so long ago the noonday
has burned across my brow
and yesterday has garnered
more than most

with all but one
of where you were
and where you’ve gone (away)
though someone thought they saw you
on the path we took as one
I wonder was I walking
there beside –

tis not so much for taking
as it is the letting go
though freedoms can been found
in both I’m told –
of destinies
I have no choice
but to speak into the wind
and pray my words will reach
the place you hold

for every one
another comes
and from their best intended
a life conspired by touch
(we won’t deny)
memories distracted
by the way you tie your shoes
and how is my eyes
are just as brown

something more
than one small thing
can change our ways (becoming)
and fade against the canopy
of what I meant to say
nothing stays so long
that I’ve forgotten
how it feels –

to look into your soul
and find my heart
