forgive
this surrender
an almost forgotten
nights you lay down
with a memory
of mine
places forsaken
longing
decided –
by wishes
held up on the night
whatever i waited
was for this
that i pined
but knew not the words
to write down
on the way
even now
i remember
each coming awake
aware of your essence
in the space
between knowing –
was always
for certain
my way home
to you
. . .

sometimes
words elude me
there’s bitter
on my tongue
for days
sometimes nights
i can’t explain
the way it is
ways i’ve forgotten
how to feel
tho lately you are near
and i can dream
of pages
where the pages end
lines to circumvent
ages
where my memory remains
folded into blankets
high upon a shelf
where once you were –
and i was yours
this way
. . .

heaven was never
so real
she confessed
one morning when coffee
could hear
as she gazed past the windows
far past the gate
a pull from forever
as want fell away
she remembers how easy
how sweetly
his need –
a place she was saved
by his touch
heaven was never
this dearly imagined
warm as the sun
in september
we loved
. . .

evening waits
in shadows
where once the orchard stood
i close my eyes
and granny calls
my name
another place
of just beyond
i’ll get there when i can
seems smaller now
weeds beneath
the boards
save me back
take me here –
wherever lives ten thousand
i’ve forgotten now
how i knew their ways
press your words
against my words –
your sigh
a mystery
breathe me home –
a map
of memories
. . .
Author’s Note: Sometimes I linger over words for no reason, so when I’m done (close enough), I read them aloud. If my hand finds my heart in the process, I know I’ve chosen well the words that can’t be said.

i shall wait
your permission
save for these wishes
this eager beginning
tell me
somewhere
you loved me another
some other
this way
take of my restlessness
make for me
something
pour me a life
from your will
should ever i fade
let heaven
remember
another beginning
a place
we are still
hold me to circumstance
breathe of my sighs
clear every ache
from these lips
gather me home
a promise surrendered
the last time
you knew me –
was another
like this
. . .

had i breath
or soul to spare
wordless words to find
somewhere
beyond this aching –
are whispers
of divine
had i known
when first we met –
of longing unconfessed
your heart
within this beating
vows of restlessness
i never heard
but for the one –
your days were meant
for mine
as e’er another
soul to spare
or wordless words
to rhyme
