watching

as eternal
my beholding
to the places still I go
tho pushed between
these edges
sharp and deep
as truth was
held beneath the tides
to bring the drifter home –
and set against
the lover’s sacrifice

as dark
the ways to travel
and worried there alone
of where the stars were leading
(let them lead)
casting long
our tattered nets
into the sweet divide
made between this world
and those beyond

fragile
as the ancient cord
barely seen at all –
tho stretched to hold
of all together now
as one to understanding
let here the thread be cut
as each was sworn
another time
to be

longing
keeps a whisper
to remind us of the rest
when songs were sang –
and hearts
knew only one
garner me
the sacred cup –
let my body rise
beholding to the night
would come for me

. . .

stirring

sit to quiet
the morning sun –
here to cool the shade
stay without e’er a need
for words

watch across
the lazy field
as wings to breakfast
fall –
spiraling provision
to the light

rest
before the day returns
be as one with me –
the redtail hawk
and raven –
the ancient evergreen

smile
and I will feel it –
by the telling
in your hand
wrapped in mine
awaiting time to slow

mark the way
and I shall find us
waiting here this night –
sharing then
the gifts of love

beneath
a patient moon

. . .

close ~

gather me trumpets –
queen anne
and clover
make of this hour
a memory of bliss
sail me to dream
on the wind of your wishes
wake me to promise –
with naught to resist

roll me in flannel
dress me in cotton
brush to my presence
the damp smell of wheat
one fleeting moment
shall garner eternal
a place on your smile
I was heaven to be

of autumn grain
and counted sheets –
lines where lines aren’t buried
and roads to stretch between
the who we were

stories told
I hear them still
and wonder to their lessons –
fairytales rewritten
by the wise

of yesterdays
to put away –
folded soft and sorted
laid upon the shelf
and three feet high

surely none
will find it there
amid the joy and sorrows
flour sacks
and candles almost gone

seasons melted
somewhere else –
and not for I the changing
would break the bed
or take the curtains down

rake the pines
of all they knew
before the frost was tempted
to give of leave
my everything
so true

slow the breeze
beneath the chimes
skirt of april showers –
where dandelions
lie of each embrace

calamine
and turned away
before the window opened
to call my name –
where echoes
I remain

grounded ~

forgive me now
this coming back
to find an understanding
of where I stood
e’en now the ground is warm
the barn is leaning further
than I thought it would in May
but now ~ so clearly now
I see the moon

forgotten yet
the pain to leave
a tear-stained sunday morning
roads to walk
alone and back again
just beyond the church bells
ring ~
vows not worth the sermon
echoing of words
were tasted new

take me now
before the first of
winter’s velvet stillness
and nights
when still I burn
with thoughts of you
cellar doors
and broken steps ~
thirteen miles to nowhere
lines to run both ways
are never true

say it ~
say it softly
speak my name
aloud
murmur in the dark
so I might hear
and know of times uncertain
as rain between the stars ~
aware of other times
you held me near

whisper as another
time has passed into
everafter promised me a place
I always knew
would come again
a house without a door ~
windows facing south
to hide the barn

don’t go ~

story me now
the life before someday
and who I was then
seems you’re all I know
when held as we were ~
(in the place we don’t mention)
the truth passed beyond
the choice to let go

riddles in rhyming
just suppose nothing
wherein we ~ the dream ~
made our way to the now
back to the places
always we linger
where you were (somewhere)
forgotten just how

the shade
of your eyes
is a moonlight reflection
embers to flame ~
this love to resume
as the touch of your hand ~
to the door of my longing
were lifetimes returning
to this ~ unassumed

what will come
or just where we’ll be come forever ~
a rush unremembered ~
this feeling of home

with never a thought
to untangle the answers
lest they whisper some other
don’t go ~
measuring breaths
by times barely breathing
so easy the telling
from others we’ve known

story me now
your passion for living ~
and where the light plays
on the still of your soul

I’ll start the coffee
if you’ll prop the window –
I’ll meet you here
somewhere ~
when next you are home

worn apart ~

when the day is drifted
further than I thought I could
be caught –
and I swear I hear forever
come the door –
some wolf disguised as miracle
but I won’t let him in –
even though but for a while
I thought I might

step beyond the comfort
of the way I’ve learned to be
and languish for a lifetime
in your arms –
but knowing still
the howling was not your ache
at all –
though somewhere else
your longing answers me

to know of this
another time –
another place we’re known
as gods to lean against familiar skies
to sit within a feeling
telling stories of the end –
and who was there to catch us –
let me catch you now again

before the strike
when moonlight flashes
memory on the pines
I’ll listen for the sigh
would bring you here –
but for now
the coffee’s colder
and circles ring the wood
morning’s bound to wake
before I dream

habits worn apart –
are fit together somewhere
I wait the night
and strain to hear my name

beyond the creek
where once we played –
the roses ever bloom
in shades of love we carried
the sweetest of perfumes

as destinies
we came to see –
the lives we touch always
in truth beyond our stretch of years
and days beyond our days

shall keep in each a memory
of presence you know best
within these halls of slumber
another dream to rest

though offered here –
a whisper
of your spirit to the wind
another day
we’ll find our way –
to be with you
again

caught inside a wish ~

where –
and I am there again
fell between the story
and the pen –
caught inside a wish you let to go
higher than an angry moon
remembered me (somehow)
a fog – a shade of grey
that was your eyes

they say it’s gone – it can’t be done
but here you are
and there I am within –

hopeless every time I’ve tried –
to live outside my longing
but I wonder even now
why I would want to say goodbye –
to feel you gone away
when there’s a place you are
a warmth (I beg you stay) –
for all that was
will bring me back (again)

when the rain is come
I’ll remember once (a sunny day)
when you kissed this mouth
and the taste of secrets shared
(they are the same)

there’s a song and there are moments –
a silence I love best
for it’s there between the twilight
and the fiddle –
that I hear your sigh –
the cool that is your breath

where –
and I am there again
fell between the story
and the pen –
caught inside a wish
you let to go
