leaves

I’ve been around
a time or two
and thought sometimes to leave
wrapped up in a blanket on the bed
desperate dispatch
of passions to survive –
to hold my hand
against a flaming torch

for consequence
is not my sort –
and right most never wrong
places still remember me this way
suffering a moment more
than ever should have been
let me go
before I beg to stay

once before
o no not then –
my soul to sacrifice
the truth was there
but hiding all the while
flush against the mantle
golden cross the grain
circling a moment –
a memory of your smile

shush the bitter
aftermath
of all you couldn’t say
dance me now
across a midnight floor
whisper to the curve
that is my longing come alive –
kiss the dying echo
of your name

familiar

of skies
beyond your flicker
I can’t say that I’ve seen –
or whether there is life
beyond my dreams

of faraways
I can’t recall
the ways to here I came –
or where was left the signs
along the night

promises forgotten
to the roads I walk alone –
tho taken of my will
to turn around

echoes force
their way inside
lately now I shudder
against the verse
forgotten not
to rhyme

of all I know
another time –
familiar
unremembered –
paths across my skin
have disappeared

lifetimes
since the first hello –
seasons fell to season
and I can
ne’er recall
the taste of snow

or perfume
spent on clementine
jasmine in the spring –
lullaby every cricket knows
silver thread
a fiddle weaves –
wing’eds flying blind
sail me now
the way they know
by heart

by distance
of a lowly beat
measurement of soul –
secrets lost somewhere
above the tide

morning comes
disguised by those –
forgotten it was night
but living as a moment
such as this –

the lowly time
of only times –
who shall proffer more –
than rivers flowed
we called
by other names

honeybees
and cedar trees
needles
nests
and nothing
the grace of eden
stirs within the still

guard us now
the knowing –
eternity is come
as heaven fell to earth
while it was dark

stolen

of these
and no more
I would swear
my allegiance –
and let not another tear fall
would pass unafraid
to the edge of the knife
with courage to suffer
for all

restless to wander
the last one arrived
to places I already know
held as a child
whispered a lover
of somewhere I passed
a long time ago

were doubt
and regret –
of sorrows to sew
shared of a vision unseen
written to secrets
will live in my stead
and curse not
the hours between

my heart
keeps apart –
moments so dear
forever decided
as stars without shame
fell not the distance
of years into light –
or splintered by thought
into flame

in places
you remember
an unremember comes
when pushed away
from moments
sharp as glass
pieces
in places
of my coming back
remnants of the past –
are held
within each drop
of summer rain

in places
where the water
rushes colder from the spring
whispers spool
as ribbons to the rock

in places
where forever spreads
a blanket ‘neath the black
pieces of my soul
are gathered there

in places
I’ve forgotten
are traces of me yet –
nights without the need
to let me go

tempted

I’m hearing voices
and seeing signs –
sparks where stars
once played
as ancient spirits come for me –
to steal my words away

of violins
and neverminds –
are reasons I don’t know
memories
to claim my porch –
pile up with the snow

been here so long
the roads have worn –
and weeds are folded over
on places once we wandered back –
to spend but one
in clover

shared a dream
tho not so much –
for fear to curs’ed fate
squandered not our destinies –
on lifetimes come
too late

promise
of one more embrace –
words survived the fall –
love needs not a place to be
but spreads
to take it all

if bitterness
should brush against
this tenderness
of soul

then take of me
to leave
before my time

and rise again
renewed by love
in yellow daffodils

beyond the fence
that held me
to this life

within the realm
of going –
the music of just when
the light was shifted –
someone
called my name

within the sound
of words unsaid –
touch already known
to take me where no roads
were ever come

within the soul
of just one kiss
a sigh
becomes a sigh –
as tears embrace
the night with aquamarine

mutterings
of what shall be
if e’er our fears
be lost –
as moments stretched beyond
the place we live

watch the sky
unwritten there –
the failings of tomorrow
seek to know
of everything
and none

speak my name
before the sun –
is risen to the promise
taste the morning air
where I am gone

. . .

recall to me
the winters past
of times –
and truth and reason
of moments more defined
and less restrained

by what was said
and who would grieve
our questions of redemption
when wondered of a time
when all was love

restore these fields
of innocence –
a lazy Thursday morn –
and nowhere soon to go
that cannot wait

gather me
to all you have –
a destiny forthcoming –
a place no longer
shadowed by the stars

of graces
we’ve forsaken
in the want for something less
would progress
take the place of times
we loved

fragile consolation
to all we might have known
when passed this way
again –

another time

give to me
the memory
of years unfated now
tho dreams can only take me
where I go

longing wears
a purple dress
the shade of which I love
and worries not for sins
already paid

in secret
contemplation
the snow is piling high
and every ounce of oil
has burned
to grey

resemblance to our destinies
is surely not our fault
we took such care
to wipe the proof
away

of miracles
there must have been
more than one
remember when
convincing me of something more
than signs

but the book is left
unopened –
I’m sure these aren’t my cards
the joker laughs
til I can scarcely sleep
bury me with potions
leave the window
cracked
and when the birds are roosting
let them be

cut the trees
the young will thrive
and when I’m grey
the best survived
a dozen more
than the summers might
have saved

to winters
we are taken
the hunter without grace
when everything is turned inside
to white –
the sacred lace

the first
to say I’m sorry
the last to say pretend
the fields are bare
and soon the time to go

remembering
the spring is come
as the reddest buds return
I’ll put my apron back
and time will slow

wrapped inside a promise
with nothing much between
the magic lent to circumstance –
the sweet desire
of dreams

cowboys sewn to flannel
each bittersweet regret
shadows fade
to scars the shade of night

illusion of a moment stilled
by fireflies and letters
tender indiscretions
to take the place
of light
