before I was a dream
of yours ~
was given breath to stay
in places
you’ve forgotten
to remember

before the light
I fell into ~
was stirred within your soul
as not much more
than thought
without a name

before the psalm
repeated ~
or as the last amen
a moment there
unguarded
(did you know)

before the sleep
of angels pressed
to claim these years
of dust ~
might heaven hold a truth
you understand

before the rise
beyond the set ~
another dawn awaits
tho melted
as these colors of goodbye

before this end
another starts ~
as love to know again
made dearer
for the lives
we can’t recall

shattered by a cloud ~

Just past the morning news
of hurry up to hustle –
a plume of smoke
and crackles filled the air.

Confusion caught in disbelief
of who had made us fall –
no one knew the names
or no one said.

Moments when the light
was brighter –
shattered by a cloud
and even then
their wings were spread
to fly.

I wonder sometimes
back to then –
of destinies becoming –
as dreams to float
with ash across the skies.

Crushed beneath our sorrow
muffled by our tears –
as heroes lined the streets
and breathed of fire.

Mothers sat in empty kitchens
waiting for the call –
would change their life
but never change
their love.

Candles burned
above the bay
reflecting home to heaven –
as slowly came the truth
to feed our fears.

Echoes still resound
along the places we were going
and all we know –
was never as before.

Stillness
wraps her loving arms
around a grieving nation –
Angels sing in voices
living here.

unremembering ~

I wish I had held
to moments more dearly ~
to songs that were played
on the breath of a sigh.
I wish I had watched
as wonder unraveled
and slept when it ended ~
a thought passing by.

I wish I had prayed
and waited my blessings ~
as sure in their coming
my delight when they came.
I wish I had dreamt
long past your leaving ~
and woke to a morning
where love still remained.

I wish I had spoke
when the words
were still tender ~
their silence remembered
to places I go.
I wish I had listened ~
did you speak of forever
in rhyme before reason ~
and wanting to know.

I wish I had gone
when the going was easy ~
the lessons to linger
not much to confess.
A road that was fated ~
the way back
forgotten.
My chance for redemption
not bartered for less.

I wish I had known
the real of what mattered ~
were moments pretending
or just passing through.
I wish I had held
a little while longer ~
e’er time steal the memory
of wishing for you.

I wish you knew ~

was a morning stilled
by dew to frost
steam rolled off a winter lawn
was there before
the sun woke up
I lay beneath the stars
at dawn

I listened hard
would comfort come
eyes closed tight,
my arms spread wide…
would I be blessed
to hold you still —
I spoke your name
and wept inside

I wish you knew
of thoughts unshared —
of love unspoke
my sore regret
for moments passed
alone and far,
I wonder —

will you find me
yet

a startled bird
a swirling leaf
a gentle sigh — as breath to skin

I sense you here
as warmth — the sun
is woke from sleep
to burn again

would dying change
the colors –
of daybreak on the pond
or move the waters
backward to the fall
would life go on
despite the urge
to end it all this way
as dew surrendered slow
into the sun

would leaving
be the answer
to questions I have asked
or roads be worn
apart beneath my feet
beyond the briar
nursed by time –
scratched into my skin
the memory of running
yesterday

would skies be sworn
to brilliance
before the darkness fell
or urge the daylight
burn beneath her flame –
forgotten now
the scent of rain
out beyond forever
tis where I wait
the night
without regret

would life be more
than I could bear –
or prayer my secrets fold
when given back
these souvenirs of love
twisted locks
of mystery –
braided by the dark
warm against the map
that is your hands

would ever I be
as one alone –
without these words to comfort
an empty page
and nothing more to write
breathe again
into the place
stories are remembered
walk the path
beneath my skies –
forsaken not
to roam

poets somewhere ~

of words I have read
and lifetimes relearning –
as sixty-six books
more than one
I confess –
a truth that endears me
to all I have known –
twas began with a promise
my worth to attest

as a heart
made to feel –
eyes to see more than sight
without want for a reason
to stay (will you stay)
but of life –
I can tell you
I can show you (somehow)
where the light
meets with heaven
and the stars fall away

as the spirits
of fathers –
of sinners and saints
become poets
for moments somewhere
revealing the answers
to the questions of why –
of the ways
they were come (every soul)
entered there

as a place
so familiar –
did I witness before
ancient moons
many lives from the sun –
and days (not so many)
as to count them again
I recall now another
when the two
became one

held to the corners
reminders of grace
as angels (unnoticed)
were promised to us
e’er we pass beyond faith
on our way to the light
burning sun –
gifted others our love

paper birds ~

come at last an answer
to questions unremembered
as who you were for me
is nothing left –
ashes to be swept across
these traces of forever –
so sweetly now
the grey dove
sails away

heaven has no bounty
beyond my will to wander –
so gather me
as glories to your breast
raise the window
break the plate
burn the fields of clover –
but barter not the moon
that knows me best

was more to me
than kingdoms come
or something someone said
beg for once you listen
with your heart
the last of summer sweat
is threatening the harvest –
as soon the snow will rise
beyond the barn

turn the page
to evermore
curse the verses passing
evidence of something here
I should have given time –
my hands are moving slower
as sets the evening shade
– will surely reconcile
to take my pen

that is my way
twisted as these sashes
yellow apron –
daisy damp aginst my drum
pleads my soul confess –
the only thing
I know for sure –
is likely now to falter

what name shall bitter taste
upon my death

weave my ribbons
bring the vase –
but let the pearls be scattered
loosed onto the path
as I was one –
I go as rain
to thirsty roots –
dreams of golden harvest
e’en as waters rush
to touch the sun

carry me the way
as then – to places
without memory
still me with ten thousand
paper birds
cast me on the silver lake
and let my story follow –
the eastern breeze
shall take of me
your name

one ~

take of these
a moment more –
than I could ever spare
and fill the night with laughter
lest you leave
before I have the sense to say
I needed you this way
one more time to hear you speak
before my heart
can grieve

dates long passed ~

thought I not of turning back
to places of my own ~
how many names forgotten
are written now to stone
a night or two
a date long passed
survived by briar and sweat
eternity foreshadowed
by moments of regret
and stood I there
more times than told
to watch as prophets marched
from shiny limousines
with linen collars starched
without a tear between them
didn’t know of plans to live
or truth that went the way
of moss –
another to forgive
the coming home for more than this
than scripture without verse
lights returned the lonely here
as destinies rehearsed
as loving lips were robbed
of voice –
words to fall apart
asleep beneath the timbers
beside a broken heart

Author’s Note: Yes, I know, but there have
been times when I stumble upon old photos, and
wonder what I thought when standing there.

all I have ~

of yesterdays I saved not one
to worry for tomorrow ~
and cured them not with misery and lace
stored the sorrow with the joy
and nursed not one the more ~
for what I loved ~
I’d lose myself
in tears of willing grace

and swear allegiance to the scars
seal my lips with sighs ~
dream the dream of lovers sworn to moss
take of these ~ the curs’ed date
and hold my flag on high ~
forgiven now each tragedy of cost

reminded of another day
and memories made dearer
by violin and passions bittersweet
as rushed into the sunset
with promise of one more ~
a life of resurrection
another dawn to greet
