he saved for her the sunset
he’d been painting
(all his life)
as crimson bled to orange
purple green –
a lover’s rite
reflections of the day
he found her standing
near the shore

held her (without speaking)
brushed a dress
of finest oil
silken sable gold
steady made her curls
to steal his pride
she came to him
each night as was created
other worlds –
beneath the canvas
(life beyond this one)

he heard the shutters heave
the rafters roar
calmed again the artist’s storm
he found the solace (her)
meadow green
with silver shoes
and palest pink (her stutter)

took his breath
and held him close
in pools of cocoa bean

he knew her
every (blush of) imperfection
had painted her in places
(always new)
this world of his
much larger now –
twilight dreams confessing
oil come to life in midnight hues

where sunset fell
in shadows (she is waiting)
evermore –
brushed against his memory
sapphire blue

breath and mars ~

Heaven
the place you were going
without ever knowing –
of paths come between.
Stood here
for years alone
ten thousand miles from home.
I was waiting this
time to return.

Easy
when came to believing
of times you were leaving
whispers to my soul.
When gave
your song away
so much I couldn’t say
you needed to hear –
promise to be.

Always
a dream you talked about
before your time ran out
with flowers in hand.
Trusting the noonday sun
with things we might have done
had the world been ours –
will to become.

Golden
fingers of summer heat
puddle around our feet –
a blanket to share.
Communion
with passing stars –
nothing but breath and mars.
Words I heard you say
I’ll never know.

Sunset
glows in the evening rain
twilight her sweet refrain
of just holding on.
Whatever waits me now
as lifetimes we allow.
My words entreating –
love me again.

everything
is changed
nothing meant
to be the same
tho I wished it still
for once
til I could take it in
was a picture that I framed
held the shutter
for too long

where was the light
I waited for
what became of this
the other night
was left before
these robins were not stationed
on the roof
a dove or two
I noticed them
but never did they whine
not even when she lost him
(the mystery forgot)
she couldn’t cry
couldn’t share with me her pain

still there she was
a shadow of his life

but the robins
how they boast
of every treasure that they find
a breath of fur
a strand of silk
tinsel for the nest
no one can build the same
busy there beneath the edge
where shingle meets with shade
the children lost
the baby fell beyond the
lowest branch

how was I to know
when the weeds were tall
and looking until dark
strained against the weakest
of the summer snares
were others there
but what had changed
where was change intended
I want the one
where is the one
the baby of the babes
the longing one
of these
the last to fly

let’s sit the night
I’ll burn out every bulb
along the path
raise the lantern up
and melt each candle into wood
we’ll find the one
was leaving

forgot to let you go

last I knew
the path grown over –
trees I loved were bending low
vine and cup with
secrets whispered –
of where we passed here
once ago

hands the same
though smaller somehow
tortured bark as web to ring –
learned of these
the lowly falling
more than colors died
for spring

come the passion now
for harvest
spare these ears
your lonesome knell
fill me up with sunlight
scattered –
ground to love
my feet so well

passed as years
through vein and valley –
crossed to crest
before the snow
hung a shade
of scarlet ribbon –
lifted there the skies
below

lark and lily –
worse for wearing
patient teachers (tears to dry)
eyes beseech
the naked branches
faith remains –
to wonder why

gather the crops
and lead me to pasture –
long woolen coats
and hats on the nail
sing me our song
to remind me of breathing
take me to meeting
where the creek
dries to bone

walk with me now
through the pain of becoming
what I feared most
when we parted that day –
a longing to fill
and woods without conscience –
carved our initials
much deeper
than ache

some faraway
somewhere –
the geese are returning
spread ‘cross the dark
til we can’t see the night
and fashioned their moon
from something
less shining –
was a moment we held
to forever this way

scatter my bones
as proof of submission –
but tell not the others
I was destined to fall –
read every word
aloud at my passing –
warm
let your hands
to my heart fold around

to hold this – the last
of my fragile intentions –
will you worry
for places I’m not
when darkness remembers
the breath of surrender –
long woolen coats
and geese on the lam

beyond this breath
before our death –
returns a brighter dawn
lives can change
the universe responds
caught in recollection
a reflection weaved of faith
fleeting as a sigh
beneath the wake –
ethers churn
as mountains move
much closer to the storm
spirits caught in shadow
shift the light
planets move
and souls confess
to other lives remembered
time is lost –
we dream
of butterflies

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ

Author’s Note ~ There is a Native American legend that says, If you have a secret wish, capture a butterfly and whisper your wish to it.  Since butterflies cannot speak, your secret is ever safe in their keeping. Release the butterfly, and it will carry your wish to the Great Spirit, who alone knows the thoughts of butterflies. By setting the butterfly free, you are helping to restore the balance of nature, and your wish will surely be granted.

The universe responds.

come before
was nothing here
but wishes for the weary –
lights beyond the evergreen
a softer place to fall
amazing feel of coming home –
arms and legs (remember)
warmed in me
as fire burned
beneath a hearth of coal
lullabies and willow trees –
who’ll drop by on Sunday
to hang the sheets
and tend the ailing fence
to sew the fields anew with thyme
(rows were never straighter)
come and I’ll be waiting
on the porch

to bring you in
this old screen door
still moans for nights forsaken –
as roses push against the post
your welcome home to view
not a word (forgiven) –
who cares for why you waited
what matters now
is where you lay (me down)
as midnight falls
in amethyst turned blue
(by morning glories)
nightbirds dare to question me again –
for secrets whispered (quiet came)
without a thought for reason –

returning this familiar star
to wish away my words

silver window ~

is it true
I’ve heard them saying
that the sun
is in the moon
her reflection burning brightly
moves his silver heart
to swoon
his regret –
for space uncharted
hours passed
while she in dreams
thinks of him beyond the sunset
hearts forget the night
between

for the chill
that was november
now her days are moved
to shade –
where before she lounged in twilight
now against her – stars are laid
onto a blanket
might he warm her
with a wish he kept aside
might she rise
the night before him –
sweetest shore to meet
his tides

crimson red
and blue vermilion
silver window
frames the dark
