words were spinning
’round in darkness
faith unbound
no way defined –
was for me as fate predicted
stars made good
the wish for time

wishing wells
of everafter
sank beneath the dipper’s rim
curled into a piece of heaven
was there we fell
in love again

fell to earth
no eyes on looking
passed to breath unrecognized
midnight hues of silent wonder
sparkle still
on southern skies

what mortal wish
could we imagine –
made its way across the night
became of longing
will unspoken –

came as love
the soul’s delight

breezeway ~

to come along
as I was called
(sometimes before the sunrise)
and working then
for ways to understand

confessions of another sin
of wanting more
than lifetimes –
with reason to remember
where I’ve been

as quiet stirs
the midnight ’round
I wait up with the wonder
as sure will come
the dream where (still) I live

the house
the yard
the leaning porch
chickens never aging
(I wonder to the places they belong)

who’s to say
and what of me
could tell (and not sound foolish)
to know each step
and where the stone is gone

my hammer weighs
against my breast –
the barn door needs repairing
(and once or twice
the gate’s come off the hinge)

breezes blow me north and south
most nights –
right through the middle
roosters sit in rusty trees
and curse the early sun

splintered rails
and knee-deep weeds –
fruit jars filled with wishes
dancing rooms
(no need for shoes)
the rent has all been paid

I can’t be sure
the neighbors watch
my coming back for going –
were not for grace
I’d leave the night
for home

come for me ~

come for me
in the depths of night –
when shadows
line the hall –
and speak to me
in voices
I have known –
warm me with
your loving grace
quench me in your tears
fill my dreams with miracles –
beyond these few
I own

silent hallelujahs ~

sleep no more
the night away
without the dream awaking
so certain you were there
outside my gate

as once (did I imagine)
I heard my name aloud
stronger every one
for moments passed

eternities within my reach
as midnight dreads the crowing
hours – but a place
to lay my head

while thoughts so often gather
by minutes unprepared
for where I go
whene’er the lights go dim

will somewhere else
my name be held
in silent hallelujahs
no whisper of regret
could speak the same

(hello) above the sigh
of wing’eds in the rafters
or stir as planets pace
familiar skies

what lowly indiscretion
has nightbirds answering
as curs’ed sheets pretend
to love me still

sleep no more
for in the want that wakes me
from my leaving –
windows open wide
to find you come

seasons still to be ~

one more time
as living goes –
and I’ll be done with dying
come before in satin gowns
feathers are my fare
barefoot on an eastern lake
wilderness and wilder
stars against my shoulder
fell into the weave
and couldn’t go
(the way of mars)
across and back
wandering much further
than the earth was flat
(the promise come)
sail away with me
fingers splayed on lacey lace
playthings for the baby
fit with one (remember me)
lightening coursed within
touching breath
melting fire
burned into a moment
a scar to last forever
and seasons still to be
of all that was
no ‘could have been’
will matter much tomorrow
as brith returns another
without the father’s name
or where we passed
with why we left
though some my heart
is keeping
in boxes lined with cedar
and buried three moons deep
hyacinth and hemlock
weaved into my tresses
evidence of times before
beneath these same
bright stars

come of age ~

I’ve come of age
a little bit late –
way past the point
I reached my prime…
My eyes now open
(sometimes I blink)
to what has been
and was never mine.

I’ve hit my knees
and stood up strong –
sometimes I thought
I never would.
I’ve seen the best
and worst of me
more faith than some –
more right than good.

Surrender has no
business here –
for falling back
on sleepless nights.
I’ve written days
in blood and truth –
and traded ink
by candlelight.

Do we ever lose
in letting go…
for only then
is our purpose met.
When comes the time
of difference –
in what we wished
and what we let.

I can’t (but I do) ~

how is it I know
(I can’t but I do)
the taste of your touch
in the morning
when streams of sunlight
warmed by your skin
settle in love’s mortal dew
how is it I know
(I can’t but I do)
the way that your hand
fits to mine
or body to body
heartbeats to one
breathless beginning all over
I wonder
I wander
some nights until dawn
how is it I know
(I can’t but I do)

three days ~

this is the place
I wished for
something moves upon the wind
and longing
feels no urgency to go
cedar sweats
as knot to knot
grain against the strumming
as white to flash
a covey spills to flight

I am here
within the wonder
the same as shale and story
to fill my blood with love ~
strength that pulls
the pines

let be
this time of loving
let not my words be caught
in harsh regrets
or looking back
to other ways I crossed
to tender paths
I wonder still
what fate awaited there
was given me for choosing
with nothing to compare
let me sit
with this becoming
as destiny unfolds
a brush against
what might have been
a solace to my soul

above a crush
of timber
wings to span the sky
and somewhere close
I hear the river sing
as soft the breeze reminds me
I am home again
this in-between
tho just the same
as hemlock, fir, and myrtle
my roots reach deep
into this place
of love

I know this song
the sound of leaves
whispers still the forest
I close my eyes
and hear the evening tide
a melody remembered
is played again at twilight
once given to the trees
when love befell the dreamer
notes of ash and chestnut
were floated out to sea
I wonder do they miss
the shore
another place they sing

play me ~

Come with me
down ancient paths
into the meadow’s
deepened dark –
petals worn and faded pink.

Come with me.

Play me as your music –
laughter spilled
from open hearts –
a moment undeserved
of blessings known.

Wishes sail
above the trees.
Silence wears a winter dress.
A sweeter kiss I could not know –
or take from passion’s lips.

With scarlet leaves
we paint the boughs
anew (this grand cathedral).
Colors melt the world
into our song.

The breeze bears
every dream –
into another sleeping sun.
Waiting there (as love)
I find direction.

Eternities between –
tho nothing more than waking.
Mine is the open hand
that bids you
come.

And the universe
cries – I will.

without within ~

without within
the circle to begin
and what of love I gave
a tide becomes

as ever there was one
anew (I am)
returning as the sunrise
to your sands

love waits not a moment
a time or place to be –
might worlds concede to rules
(though there be none)

as one to be
(enough for me)
the only way I know
tis more than life –
breathing just this way

reason falls so easy
from the valley of my hands
the ways to cross –
mountains unto you

(and you)
were just as unprepared
as I to comprehend
love beyond the realms
of you and I –

circles now remembering
eternities to come
without within
there is no end –

the universe of one
