the narrows ~

the pathway sometimes narrows
for a moment – only fright
for what might be
eluding me
beyond this lovely night

would light ahead
be guidance
to a place I left behind –
or saved by wings unwilling
to alter space and time

remembered something
more than life –
more than kisses known
sunlight warms the frozen dawn
memories of his own –

proof of love
surrendering
the last cool breath of May
strength to bear the burdens
of innocence betrayed

beyond where someone listens
for a name
(a sound so sweet)
are echoes where a heart
was known to beat

no getting back
nor going ’round
just once and one more dance
lights beyond the best we willed
betrays our circumstance

places we can’t see ~

Lovers cradled
breast to breast –
soldiers welcomed home.
Beds are made
to places we can’t see.

Seasons pass
as words to water –
long abandoned springs.
For every life
ten thousand more
within her bosom sleep.

Shield to shield
as kiss to kiss –
lips denied
their stories.
Songs no one remembers

– she sings to them
tonight.

again to flame ~

was once a night
remembered
and I awakened in the dark
for you were gone
(I hurt so bad that summer)
as in the place of wonder
I was left with silent rain
a will-o-wisp
and the memory of touch
fell away
beneath the weight
of demons

forgotten what it was
to breathe
to love

the darkness
crushed against the cold
and I thought again
to flame –
a candle raised
arm-length to the sky
names were kept
of stars I made
sparks of long ago
streams of what we wanted
sailed as whispers
to the wind –

forever keeps
a tender flare –
sacred to the night
forgotten now
the falling
into dreams

whisperings ~

my grandmother knew
as grandmothers know
when first they held us to light
something (but who has the words
to describe it)
hush (now the sins of) your heart
take it down
burn the bed
whispering flutters
madness to meaning
though everyone shades (their soul)
from the truth
a sign unexpected
broken and scattered
there goes the star
now ahead
won’t say a thing
about stories repeated
things we might know
(we don’t know)
messages can’t be heard
above screaming
where I am (listening)
grandmother knows

forgotten ~

within my understanding
there’s a lot that I don’t know
some clouded
recollection
of a time before I passed
glimmering existence
to others (might have been)
aware the circumstance
of my condition
differences made clearer
by lessons fated there
and where I was –
e’en now
I can’t recall
what I knew
of other worlds – I knew
I didn’t know
poppies swirled in lavender
and steel
was there before
I turned again
and noticed I was gone
forgotten now the taste
that was my name

the crush ~

somewhere
a crush of hummingbirds
press into a garden
unsure the source
would urge them to remain
where promise
swirls in marigold
tulip trees and ivy
hovers long above a kiss
a guitar without strings

a dress of lace
to first communion
swells beneath the dew’s caress
what longing undiscovered
beats on scarlet wings

with sweetest contemplation
the path
of certain pleausre
in moments undecided
and kept as yesterday
where I shall find
another life
of times I can’t remember
the lure of honeysuckle
ten thousand miles
from home

I know
you’d never know it
by the way
you hold your gin
but there are lines
around your eyes
I can’t resist
there’s a far away
(I wonder) do you know it
even now
there’s a place you go
where nothing much exists
yet I remain
as was before
and wait for your return
no matter to the time
or space between
for only this
a moment passed
and I am once again
touching you
in worlds
beyond your dream

the distance wearies
truth the same feeling
last night ~
I saw you
at the edge of the light
you were caught in the shimmer
never meant me to see
lest I think you were more
than over me now

the light was just fading
how amazing the colors
of jasper to elm
persimmon to fate ~
slowed in my memory
a moment of lifetimes
(breathe)
even now
I can scarce concentrate

on forever so different
than those of our season
we sang
and we laughed ~
and we wrote it all down
~ as pages created
to the curve of a shoulder
places where breast meets with bone

as my story
the tale of my longing
repeated
makes no difference
the time or the rules (we allow)
as a stirring within
I can’t say I blame you ~
what it means
(just a glimmer)
though different somehow

suffice for believing
as the first time
the last time
a sometime (I waited)
these reasons to know
more than existence
from sunrise to setting ~
places burn still
in the depths of my soul

like the way your hand
melts into mine
(remember)
the way the light clings
to shadows of then ~
was there for a moment
I saw you ~
and for ages
I held you again

breath of spring ~

When the light has come
and here
on dusty shelves
I claim my past with you ~
(the breath of spring)
I shall fill my lungs at last ~
and write my name
in colors of this dawn
of summertime and locust bloomed
in swirls of aubergine
Nights were cool
‘cept when I touched your skin ~
constellations etched
from blade to bade
Was there I knew another life ~
the life I love again

fabled star ~

had I known of this
before the morning after came –
before the touch
was mine to change the rest
had I known of time
when nothing else
mattered (but the moments)
– would I have listened
when the warning came
to run

when the way was blocked
and ivy weaved in weeds
across my path –
when wonder filled a place (I didn’t know)
when came to me the reason
every question I allowed
– dreams of blue horizons
filled my soul

had I known the cost
for every care –
and vows I couldn’t keep
was there one I knew before –
I’ll come again
resolved to every breath anew
to change before I changed –
to save myself
from falling (let me fall)

when skin forgets
the arms that held –
words when none were said –
when years have gathered
all I have to give –
wish on me (a fabled star)
as vapor holds the flame

sleep
and I shall find you –
 e’er you dream
