one night ~

find me here
in closing –
just past the end of time
in sheets of silken shade
your favorite kind

find me
wrapped in ribbons
weaved into your heart ~
dream of me
and wake me
with the dark

shower me with poems
were written long before
when as a boy
you wished for me
one night

come for me
when all the rest
is emptied from your mind ~
when love
is all you have
come to me

a place on your pillow ~

As softly
I am remembered
to you ~
as a kiss
once your words
claimed to me ~

Found you
in everything new
I am knowing
was less than the places
made free ~

Penned to my memory
buried your sin
and died (every time)
for the love
we begin

I shall leave heaven
a place
on your pillow
and sing while you sleep ~
of waking to dreams

seeing in the dark ~

somebody said
I was destined for nothing ~
nothing they thought
when I came here to be
smaller than most
and telling of others ~
lives nearly gone
something living
in me

of the ways
I have wandered
dare I speak of them now
when the best I could do
would be show you
(somehow)

the patterns in chaos
in the rust ~ in the flaw
in blossoms held back
by the vine

of a hole
on the backside
of all you believe ~
a universe strung
by the weight of a dream

blessed release
to see in the dark
tho labeled as crazy
sometimes ~
howling at moons
and shifting as shadow
let loose one night
by the stars

a pathway unnoticed
by prophets and thieves
was left in the ashes
of fear and belief ~
by fortune and wishes
made one

would that I warn you
of how short
the night
mornings to tremble
when finding you gone
left to the sheets
of nothing worth keeping

~ was nothing you knew
all along

just the same ~

there you are
watching ~
from the face I remember
with the sun in your eyes
and tears on your smile
trying your best
not to fade at the notion
I know where you are
how you feel
(just the same)

far beyond
this supposing
of some other way
might we choose of the paths
ending here to begin ~
holding far more
than a moment (let go)
and a lifetime
of already come

would fate be decided
by the brush of a hand ~
or a breath
as a warm evening fell
floated with song
once given us word ~
to dance (even now)
on our toes

to know
as I know you ~
undone by surprise
and promised of love
without shame (or regret)
when arms reach
to hold ~ I will remember
(this way)

and eyes never cried
for me yet

anyway ~

of all I have known
so few as you are ~
with words
I can’t paint
you (the same)
as a snowflake
in sunlight ~
a warm winter breeze
of a poem you wrote me
one time

how you said
it was nothing ~
no more than a line
you’d found on your way
back to me

a thought
without logical place
to become ~
(don’t think it means more
than you meant it to be)
when given to voice
on my hand

a message of blue
in piecework design
told of place ~
I never had been
walking the day
in the afternoon sun
I was there ~
(did you know)
anyway

a kiss met with two
maybe three at one time
and I knew
(did you know)
what would come of my love
of a verse
strung to word ~
wasn’t much left to say
as hearts fell
to silence (wide open)

hand as by hand
choice of this choice ~
breath when the rest
came apart
(every time)
a willing retelling
the story of you ~
and I without answers
or longing
to rhyme

places I’ve known ~

of all that I am ~
another there living
in the worlds of my passing
a house down the way
chickens and clothes lines
merrigold peepers ~
as purple wallpaper
now peeling away

of dust I’ve collected
tales to deliver ~
and thirty years more
than the last to repeat
who will remember
the places I’ve known
or tastes (to my tongue)
by longing
made sweet

rusted to ground
as proof of the living ~
of who wandered first
and who gave me name
changes
arranging
as backwards becoming ~
a time when my laces
unraveled the same

touching the light
of burning horizons ~
where destinies crowd
another to come
whispered I love you’s
are swept to the corners ~
as scars to remind us
of promise undone

lay me to rest ~
covered with flowers
glories and ribbon
the colors of spring
tell them you knew me
tell them you loved ~
but beg not your silences
tell them a thing

the creek is still rising
where the dreamer
once found me ~
awaiting his fate (as mine) to unfold
came from a distance
a long time returning
hands seeking lace ~
as stories untold

not so far ~

in the space to hold
a story ~
the mystery of days
and for a precious few ~
the rhyme of nights
where tablets laid
of whitest pearl
are reflecting now our sun ~
stones to walk
across the bliss of life

in the dream
we had forgotten ~
where living lies awake
for another day ~
another slumber come
denied the rush to losing
let us sit awhile
with love ~
and worry not what others
might have said

in the silence
where the song is felt
pressed against our music ~
a timid drum
eternally shall keep
in quiet let us listen
to the echo (is our soul)
the welcome home
as always known
(is knowing us again)

in the sigh
released by evermore ~
a name we dare not
mention ~
confession of the best
of all we are
to that which is
(without a place)
would fill us up with longing ~
and find us (when)
the world is fast
asleep

in the one
that is ~
our in between
of breathing and out ~
the truth we wear
needs never proof to be
the light is still
a door unlocked ~
prayers awaiting answer

~ forever
not so far away
we are

sometimes ~

lost to the passing
of dark into day ~
as starlight
of dew
bittersweet

breathed
a beginning
how easily done ~
as chill to
the sweat of defeat

a number
a name ~
ascribed to the winds
an essence remaining
somewhere

tender assault
on my favorite time ~
quietly
finding you there

stitched to the back
of lids ~
where I’ve kept
places and times
we will meet

music sometimes
when the words
fall apart
forgiven the path
of retreat

lifelines
are stretched
from one to the next ~
a glimmer of someone
I knew

where are you now
I wonder all morning ~
as twilight
lays wet on the dew

above the leaving ~

gone the way of
mortal sorrow –
sunlight where the worry stood
places gone
but for us never
will the past
be passed for good

the same of truth –
she keeps no pages
scribbled down
each date and time
love becoming all eternal
more than man –
this sweet design

somewhere now
the best is waited –
on crystal seas
with emerald shores
oceans rise above the leaving –
remembered not
to lives before

lines to cross
with rhyme and reason
someone holds us ever close –
grieves the stillness
born of shadow
when nights are long –
the ground so cold

I swear ~

steady this drum
on the pulse of your mercies
and steal my last breath
from the breeze
strain to the sound
of poetry pleading
to moments all measured
by these

know me
to know me
closer to close
softer the name you recite
as learning to breathe
with somebody else
adrift in your essence
tonight

break from the empty
fill now the warmth
of sunlight to corners
long bare
throw off the covers
and run through the shadows
~ I’ll be your memory
I swear

save for indifference
the doings undone
and worry
for places to be
slow to the rhythm
of night birds returning
o’er oceans
remembered
as me
