without ~

was ever one
a time to see
beyond our mortal sight –
to know
without our knowing
of dark within our light

of stars denied
our wishes –
some mystical retrace
eternities
reminding us –
of moments without place

of gone ahead
and ways to come –
with miles the path til then –
would garner more
than ever fate –
in lives
to love again

was ever there
a loss of self –
another trust to earn –
prayers to lay the night
beyond our reach

was certain come
a place we were
would seal as one divine
knowledge of forevermore –
a time beyond
our time

as only now
of all I have –
of hearts – one soul
made true
wherein I am –
of all I am
as once before I knew

potions ~

in secret
contemplation
the snow is piling high
and every ounce of oil
has burned
to grey

resemblance to our destinies
is surely not our fault
we took such care
to wipe the proof
away

of miracles
there must have been
more than one
remember when
convincing me of something more
than signs

but the book is left
unopened –
I’m sure these aren’t my cards
the joker laughs
til I can scarcely sleep
bury me with potions
leave the window
cracked
and when the birds are roosting
let them be

cut the trees
the young will thrive
and when I’m grey
the best survived
a dozen more
than the summers might
have saved

to winters
we are taken
the hunter without grace
when everything is turned inside
to white –
the sacred lace

the first
to say I’m sorry
the last to say pretend
the fields are bare
and soon the time to go

remembering
the spring is come
as the reddest buds return
I’ll put my apron back
and time will slow

wrapped inside a promise
with nothing much between
the magic lent to circumstance –
the sweet desire
of dreams

cowboys sewn to flannel
each bittersweet regret
shadows fade
to scars the shade of night

illusion of a moment stilled
by fireflies and letters
tender indiscretions
to take the place
of light

nesting ~

came the wind
to steal your whisper
sweetest light against my soul

soft as pine
to needles nesting –
something
worth the wait
to know

passed the morning
without warning –
begged the darkness
fall away –
held beside the fate
of leaving –
curs’ed words
we couldn’t say

twilight sworn
to grieve our sleeping –
warns the night of love
renewed
hours into hours
slipping –
lifetimes here
we never knew

bent for choosing
free for losing –
time and space as one
shall be

last time here –
I scarce remember
where it was you came
for me
. . .

familiar ~

long before
this time was come
another breath we shared –
verses died
but no one missed
the sound

eager
as were hands to trace
treasure to the map –
tho crossing in the quiet
wore us down

kept the faith
to meet with wish
returning by the night –
tho never have I seen
you smile
that way

presence
sure to linger
wherever we might be
as life to strain
the vow of yesterday

between the life
I live (to love)
and the one I write about –
tis another me –
another restless will

somewhere I can go to
when nothing else
makes sense –
the only thing familiar
is the still

of choices
long forsaken
to the wilderness of age –
and the chance to know again
was almost gone

when in the still
of wanting –
a time I found my way
and leaned into eternities
with you

unnoticed complication
to dwell on
might have beens –
had stars been lined
along another blue

had waters
risen higher than
the mark beneath my stone
or weighted more than wishes
to my skies

dreamers swear
to know me well
of words that fall so easy
spreading in their wake
my mystery

years
of almost silent
tears I never cried
tho rarely now –
I speak of you aloud

just the same
as somewhere else
I let my passions loose –
a place already gathered
to my soul

verses float
the smokey gale
dragons roost the cedars
words denied
are coming round
again

. . .

dare ~

dare to let me love you
as the swallow loves the spring
as winter mourns the smell
of burning leaves

dare to let me hold you
as blue defies the clouds
as storms to brace
against the night
we knew

dare to let me touch you
til the final flame is gone –
as secrets spilled
to shadows
round our bed

dare to let me understand
the magic that you make –
stories yet unwritten
to your dreams

dare to let me know you
as I knew you times before
and roads we took –
awaiting
to arrive

dare to let me kiss you
to taste your words as mine
and live on breath –
was just before
my name

letters from the spring ~

to places
you are part of
every one – in every way
to dreams
where others sleep alone
I wandered yesterday

to lexington in autumn
endless fields
of winter grain
where friends around me gathered –
seeking refuge from the rain

ribbons kept to letters
nights I read them
one by one
– and listened
as the sirens wailed
into the dying sun

you were there
and I was fearless –
every story bound to mine
with no worry for tomorrow
– or a longing
undefined

of faraway confessions
I’ve forsaken death for love –
was a moment
you were with me –
do you remember where
that was

For a while
tho barely noticed
by the passing through of days –
Were a people come
for nothing more
than innocence to save
When gave of all
to keep the truth –
of destinies made right
Returned to evil –
Godliness
Recalled to darkness –
Light

come for me ~

of the ones
were passed before me –
as wanderers to home
might lovers wake beyond
this night –
to places we have gone

eyes to close –
lips to move
tho nothing much is heard –
songs reserved to darkness
rise without a word

symmetry of mysteries
and where the glass
was broke –
some believe
and less conceive –
of stories never spoke

bend my ear
and warm my hands –
lest the nightbird weep
for secrets love
was passed between –
returning us to sleep

shifted now
the waning moon –
and none to share the flame
as once before
was come for me –
and knew of love the same

as gold
to settle somewhere
in the depths
of soul revealed
life remains of places loved –
as truth remains
of will

who am I
they wonder
though I shall not concede
or give them more than rhyme
to understand

lace was never denim
pearls are thrown away
and verse will always win
the morning fight

dreams are more
than one night stands
and more than someone telling
of places faraway –
much closer now

time is something less
than lines –
gifted to the reader
spilled into the yellow
indigo
