lessons in surrender ~

stay

it seems
and yet I can’t be sure
my reasons for becoming –
the ways I’ve come
in shadows
of the sun

the rocky path
above the vale –
darkness gleaned
of silence
as trust I dared
remember
to the light

lessons
in surrender
tears and time
to wonder –
who am I to listen
– who to wait

blossoms burst
from dirty hands
as hearts somewhere
to whisper –
my name aloud
in places
I am found

. . .

(I thought) I knew ~

holdmehere

names have come
(more often)
to places
without none
dreams I never dreamed
would come (undone)
patchwork of the living
the coffee has grown cold –
as destinies (foretelling)
long ago

to wonder
(as I’m known to do)
where and when
and whether
the path was come
as (fated) – I to choose

the ways before
and all at once
familiar I am finding –
reflection
of a light
(I thought) I knew

here –
have you forgotten
the color of my eyes –
places (I am still)
I loved you so
long before the wondering
got the best of me
you were come –
(remembering
my soul)

rise me

secrets wear
the story long
and there my purpose known
as quiet moves
these sleepless bones
to write

sacred
as repentance held
lips still wet with prayer
as silence wraps
forgiveness ‘round
the night

as blush the morn
becoming new
a refuge to my soul
constellations
never were so bright

the sun
shall rise me gently
as wings above the flame
a tremor held in place
against the light

dreams
almost forgotten
are gathered on the lawn
longing wills my whisper
into flight

. . .

nameIwrote
longing walks
familiar paths
where once we loved
the same
smoke rings settle blue
beyond the spark
ravens fold
their flannel wings –
allegiance to the crush
shadows cleave
to grieving –
memories of dark

it seems so long
the taking back –
how many passed since then
were seasons come
and cold –
our only fear
lay with me
to listen now
a song you used to know
pressed into the melody
of drumming
once held near

. . .

please ~

staywithme

stay
tho I won’t beg you
one more story
might you tell
one more star
to catch me sleeping
where I fell

one and then
another –
I can’t promise
where they’ll end
til morning breaks –
and there I ask
again

please
and for another
might I give
of all I own
– or save my tears
for leaving lest you go

somewhere
near –
daylight creeps
across an empty bed
hearts prepare for keeping –
words we
left unsaid

. . .

left of this

but for moments
left a lifetime –
markers linger
from the fall
whispered thunder
rolling canvas
– white the page
beneath the squall

living words
I have no language
but for taste – what tongue shall know
where I passed
(or where I lingered)
long before
my letting go

threads to bare
as guilded treasure –
write your name upon my heart
promise still of everafter
one more kiss
before we start

. . .

beloved ~

april2011

flush me with stone
to depths gently whispered
a polish too bright
to behold
as journey made over
and over anew
warmed by the rushing
as one with the cold

pour me to seasons
with no way returning
gathered as beating blue fins
neath a wave
with courage of something
much deeper
than telling
of destiny waiting to save

break to my bosom
steal me to wander
out past the reaches
of wishes –
the moon
to places of wilderness
heaven made holy –
by egret
otter
and loon

sail me
on slats
of maple and cedar
chart of my course
by the stars
departed from skies
foretold by our fathers –
to harness my will
from afar

sing me to home
with psalms of the river
blackbird and beetle
nature defends
a name by my going
is forged into memory
by ocean
myrtle
and wind

silvermorning

eighteen miles
from where I first
 gave to love
a name –

I lay my burdens
down here
by the fence
wrapped in yellow flowers
a favored cotton gown
was painted up the same
as summer sense

pushed apart
by two and fro –
‘tween the rusty briar
of captive wheat
to wishing fell away
took a chance
on leaving –
of every place we wanted
to lay us down
(to find us lost)
this way

silver morning
sl
ppers –
such a simple treasure
of questions meant
for this –
for answers known
wrapped in yellow sheeting
kept us here much longer
than harvest moons
to carry –
winter home

richerme

before
and still
the shadows come
to grace familiar light
as fragile once was fallen
from the sky

pled apart
for grieving –
one for me and naught
the twilight paled
as slumber questioned why

awake for me
the longing –
was left by touch divine
as sacred now the pleading
slip away

carry me
marry me
doubt me not tomorrow
another sun shall break
against the pain

willows lean
into the cause –
without the ache complaining
somewhere near are sparrows
turning home

tethered by a promise
almost
not forgotten
there shall be
my welcome back –
to find this way
alone

rememories

when tomorrow
I’ve forgotten
– how it feels
to feel this way
a fleeting sweet reminder
shall remain –

when years
are let behind me
as sunrise to my birth
will I fear no more
to letting go –
with memory
of the first

I knew of love
(be brave my heart)
a moment held by grace
would e’er I come
to speak aloud
– of miracles
retraced

when held apart
by distances –
miles and seasons true
silence fell to words –
the best
of you

forever this
to breech the night –
another living come
in colors
I remember –
shining
every one
