home

by mercy
I have wandered –
as a student to the light
remembered how it was
I came to be
a part of all creation –
what destiny have I
as sister to the myrtle
lark and leaf

how green the river
blood must flow –
to claim my heart anew
where mysteries of blossom
yet prevail
o’er bill and bark –
a briar bent
to wrap around me so –
tied with words
and not a one
to tell

cooler now
the summer path
awaiting for my feet –
a gentle breeze
made softer by my own
voice to greet
the mourning dove –
nightbirds sail beyond
as dreams are washed
into this sweet unknown

nearenoughtoheaven

how brief
to home
was heaven bound
wings along the roof
with plans to leave
before the morning come
caught within the meter
of fading reveries –
take to hold
a moment nearly gone

whiskey warms
the fault of dreams
flannel on the floor
pages flutter madly –
silken flame
thwarted by the reunite
years and years
and none –
were written
to my soul
before you came

comeback

hold my soul
as one of longing
forgiven more than grace
divine –

will trust the darkness
fold you sweetly
into the heart
you hold of mine

take my hands
to know my sorrows –
martyred verse
unclaimed by word
one more time
will faith be tested
for prayers to listen
undisturbedsweettom

hold my heart
beneath the covers
warm to every place I know
there you are
begin –
just ending –
silence falls as rain
to snow

slow to come ~

briefly

forever this
was slow to come –
seasons without measure
tides are rolled
tho somewhere –
sands are dry
light is danced above the waves –
please come home my darling
winds are blowing
verses to the sky

rise and fall
as distance easy –
will is washed away
of lessons – once we feared
the worst to know
sew your heart
inside my sleeve –
promise me to write
death will come
before my letting go

twilight pools
on broken shells
worlds beyond our reach
as tiny white
echoes gone before –
letters left of leaving
will find us here again
learning new –
once familiar shores

. . .

before amen ~

someIknow

within this softer summer
an evening storm
is come
to wash the last
of winter
from my bones
here the babies gather
with stories yet to tell
as songs made new
except as we become
surrendered to the longing
set the table right –
and say the names
once more
before amen

morningofbeginnings

from the first
a whisper came –
beheld me to november
to wishes
(you remember)
touch divine
a barefoot side of heaven –
as once I thought you knew
a dusted floor
where sunlight split
the pines

a cedar box
of rusted fame
with ne’er a truth to carry
the key is gone –
but for the lock I saved
china plates
will nothing match
these shades of sarsaparilla
blessings of
another time –
forgave

crooked boards
and needs to tend –
tho who will understand
the ways I came
to walk these fields alone
tempted into trouble
morning warms the same
the night so still –
that all the stars have gone

. . .

more of you than this ~

findingme

let me go on
sweetly –
let pains this path distill
as sorrows met
with dandelion sighs
let me go or keep me
I don’t care – won’t beg you stay
the road is turning
north on
southern skies

let me go
or let me linger
let me teach
or let me learn
where light is spilled
yellow by the gate
grieve me not the leaving –
had I known where this
might end –
a day beyond
the first I was
to wait

let me go
I won’t bother
asking more of you
than this –
the weight
that is your stutter
on my skin
stay another moment –
I’ve forgotten all I said
free me
with this loosing
let me go –
again

pieces

were memories
becoming this –
pieces not for barter
shall keep to nest
the coldest night we’ve known
guarded not for staying –
we kept inside too long
ancient fires to burn away
ashes from the stone

songbirds weep
for something
lost upon the winds –
music plays
tho I can’t hear a thing
wasted now the wanting –
for all I should have said
– the chill is come
to wrap around
my spring

longingstirs

for every time
I knew –
another here awaiting
some presence
come to feel
me up with lies
of mercy me and mysteries –
who are you to tell
of words we used for love
I knew them well

for longing hurts
as nothing worse
than e’er I knew before
what questions hold not answers
of relief
bittersweet the falling
of what I know as truth
I dreamed you home
to nights beyond
this sleep

beyond this fearful
waking
some understanding lost
who shall sit the night
worth waiting for –
remembering another
when wishes lit the dark
I am here
the same as once
we were

stillIshallbe

silence partakes
of all that we matter –
streams through the kitchen
and runs down the hall
forgotten the sound
of laughter repenting
ignorance waits
to steal from us all

weak from the struggle
stronger the scars
are folded as wings
paper white –
the last time we noticed
was the first
we were loved
as silent to speak
in defense of the night

were morning left over
love coming down –
as black turns his face
on the dawn
little we know
the end just beginning
as destiny wills us
remember –
move on
