psalms91

reason grows in patches
fated disarray
as bent into the shade
misunderstood

of summers
were there e’er enough
to make up for the chill
breezes unrelenting
do they know

daisies painted
yellow –
mystery revealed
as glories strain
the steeple every time

lessons
spent on tenderness
tore apart the past
saved upon the tongue
another name

hid within
the oldest psalm –
a secret yet unknown
message from a heart
no longer sung

pen to page
whate’er was lost
shall find us here again –
taken by a sigh
into the sun

. . .

and tell me ~

passions

remember this
some sunny day –
hiding in your closet
folded me with jackets
flannel grey
left alone
with all I’ve known
of cooler nights to follow
pieces packed
in cardboard –
suitcase empty now

photographs
of black and white
almost I was leaving
when the best of all
the times
we stumbled on

remember this
the waking up
in sheets of sweetest linen
floating places west
along the ridge
wing’ed crest of falling
pirouette of angels –
forgotten to the sorrows
written here

in ruby red
where slippers fell
the same as ink to Monday
I signed my name
in cursive next to yours
swirls and loops
and hula-hoops –
take of me for chances
a way of walking
somewhere still –
how can I be gone

remember this
the squeaky boards
of sleepless nights returning
circle now the ashes
with the flame
purple light
as passion glows
warm into the marrow
worried not the seeker
unafraid

destinies
as we conceive –
sit the night for supper
folded now our tendencies
are making room
for grace
love remains
in coffee stains –
ribbons to the saucer
lights beyond
where darkness fell
as wishes on the pond

remember this
of everything –
one more kiss (and tell me)
words to disbelieving –
have kept us here
always

. . .

heaven nowhere ~

mistook

rock me the cradle
was broken before
and warm not these lips
with regret
childless to walk
eternity’s night –
awaiting my sins to forget

wrapped in the darkness
survived by the womb
heaven nowhere
but my sleep
voices inside me
arguing so
and I without reason
or promise
to keep

loneliness dreams
in colors of grace
an almost forgotten shade
forever stood long
by the side of the bed
remembering life
unafraid

where will I go
when all I have left
are questions of
anger and shame
of sacred forgiveness
reserved not for me
demons shall carry
the weight
of my name

take of my slumber
grieving not once –
for a life
filled with reasons to die
curs’ed the ground
where peace finds no rest
as pain reconciled
to goodbye

rock me the cradle
was broken before
and warm not these lips
with regret
childless to walk
eternity’s night –
awaiting these sins to forget

knowing

of those who know
are not so much –
and some are sworn to silence
lifetimes gone
with knowledge
on their tongue –

waiting verse
or page appear
waiting questions asking
which
and where
and who am I
to know

tell me
of the evermore
swims beneath the river –
of mountains
just beyond the reach
of storm

tell me
are there hearts that bleed
rather than surrender –
souls that shift the night
in search of love

where and then
I’ve come to know –
all was never written
somewhere tides
have cleared the lowly shore
galaxies colliding
in the ruse
of letting go –
lanterns blaze to mark the way
we know

tell me
are there others
searching as I am –
caught in life
and dreaming of the sea

. . .

familiar ~

long before
this time was come
another breath we shared –
verses died
but no one missed
the sound

eager
as were hands to trace
treasure to the map –
tho crossing in the quiet
wore us down

kept the faith
to meet with wish
returning by the night –
tho never have I seen
you smile
that way

presence
sure to linger
wherever we might be
as life to strain
the vow of yesterday

between the life
I live (to love)
and the one I write about –
tis another me –
another restless will

somewhere I can go to
when nothing else
makes sense –
the only thing familiar
is the still

dragons ~

of choices
long forsaken
to the wilderness of age –
and the chance to know again
was almost gone

when in the still
of wanting –
a time I found my way
and leaned into eternities
with you

unnoticed complication
to dwell on
might have beens –
had stars been lined
along another blue

had waters
risen higher than
the mark beneath my stone
or weighted more than wishes
to my skies

dreamers swear
to know me well
of words that fall so easy
spreading in their wake
my mystery

years
of almost silent
tears I never cried
tho rarely now –
I speak of you aloud

just the same
as somewhere else
I let my passions loose –
a place already gathered
to my soul

verses float
the smokey gale
dragons roost the cedars
words denied
are coming round
again

As any other –

It was a beautiful day; temps in the low 60’s and when the opportunity came to be alone, I knew just where. I carried a cup of coffee and a book (long overdue for finishing) to the swing on the back fence line. Unsure as to whether dampness might have settled there, I took along a blanket and spread it over a collection of fallen leaves.

The wind sang enough that the swing moved without effort, and so I pulled my legs up into the swing as well. Ahhhhh; this is heaven.

I had barely finished reading two pages when the hunting began behind me. Apparently, harvest had been lost in the leaves and the scramble to find them was in full swing. I tried to ignore (I really tried to ignore) but the harder I tried, the louder the rustling. Finally, I shut the book and declared, ‘okay; I’m putting it away’………..and leaned back to look up through the trees.

Unbelievable moments passed before I traipsed to the house for a pillow and a refill on my coffee. This time, I brought along a camera. The trees were alive, despite the near naked limbs. I counted three huge nests of squirrels (which explains the frantic search for acorns), and at least four chubby squirrels trapezing across vast regions of elm and sweetgum. Wing’eds eclipsed the blue more than once, including a hawk with a breast the color of warm vanilla, and one or two angry starlings (aren’t they all).

The wind continued to move my bed; as the sounds of immortality raked against yesterday’s leaves. Shadows rolled in and sometime over the afternoon, the book fell to the ground.

north was south ~

the pages
so much fuller now
than e’er my pen could say
and rhyme makes nothing much of sense
before I pull away
tho I for one
without the words
to tell you what that means
I’ll write it down
and leave it as a message
to your dreams

when bent to fate
we made a place –
no one dared believe
would make it through the coming back
another time to leave
as none so sure
the ways to go or when we’d wander home –
north was south
and south intent on letting
love alone

of redbud rest
and night bird nests –
pancakes rolled in butter
and all day long to sit
against the sun
married once
and let it be
the place for coming quickly –
begged me let forever sleep
in faded cotton gowns

of other times
a photograph or two
I cannot find –
black and white are pasted
in the space between the lines
with none to know
so few can tell –
of meant to be just right
as fingers trace
the softest grey –
eyes to hold me tight

I’ll take my chance
and stay the night –
wrapped in silence still
held beneath the rafters
with truth
beyond our will
forgotten every warning
bet you knew my ways
back then –

words were never given us
a place to pass again

signs ~

of fates undecided
by the moons
of july –
and wishes where
waters we flowed –
backwards returning
and further yet
north –
a frozen reminder
of time passing on

forgotten
the reasons –
for every misstep
and paths without conscious
to lure us away
as prophets forsaken
by promise to love –
for boots
and a bible –
was heaven betrayed

who’s to know
who would listen
were the world
made to hear –
and sworn for release
was music
to make

of another I knew
a truth almost gone
and a flame more
than dark could recall
a whisper dissolved
on the hope of a sigh
and worried
not far –
for the coming
again

I’ve known you awhile
more than nights
without name
or stories I’m sure
to remember –
swirls within letters
beauty disguised –
loops became lust
became love

sweet recognition
of times here before
turning of seasons
with nothing to lose –
reminders
how easy
was loving to breathe –
retelling of stories
once written
of you

mirrors ~

give me to blue jeans
jasper and jasmine
tiny white pearls weaved into thread –
storied collection
of people and places
someone I miss
was somebody said

of boys and their business
pretention of men
and swore they could be
what they were in my eyes
angels (and demons)
traded a lifetime
of moments
and secrets
and sighs

breathe of the pages
the sweet smell of paper
rhyme
where there never was rhyme
flight resurrected
from limestone and sparrow
was heaven made whole –
these pieces of time

forgiven myself
for acts of transgression
felt something more
than the warm rise of breath
old silver coins
float in the fountain –
eternity more
than a strange
little death

spare me to words
gifts of forever –
are written to places
of cotton and steel
get me to home
while the crops are still standing
let me down easy
the stories are real
