magic

e’en now
I remember
a sliver of moon
tiny white shells
on the ground
poems were written
each night
as I lay
neath a cradle of stars
– a heart without sound

committing to memory
every fissure of light
as wings gave name to the wind
I began to tell stories
of how it might be
– the grief of a sailor
returned by the sea

in search
of the lost
some answer to find
tho weaved to a locket
his share
were happiness more
than a place
on the map
a long ago something
no one compares

how the pines
loved the river
for reasons unknown
boats rushed the current
to home

birthed into fortune
restless to wake
dreaming the color
of oceans unseen
quiet keeps silent
the pulling apart –
as shores shy away
from the green

. . .

Author’s Note: A little history. I awake more
than most in the midst of the night – holding to
words I can’t say. Launched from the bed
by the promise of page – I sit in the still –
telling stories by dark. Some call them rambling;
others, meant to be.

whereIgo

had I known
of this returning –
when times before we loved
so unaware
of stars beyond my sleep
where dreams evaded dreaming
of worlds we left behind
counting threads
to more than cotton sheets

fragile rhyme
suspended
as laces thru the pines
whispers
lost to hearing – beckon me
with want for everafters
laid me down somewhere
nights I walk
with all that is
to be

how can it be –
the answer
awaits the seeker (seeking)
empty hands
(are reaching for) the proofsunrise_by_dralik-d48ydks
a mystery of absolute
(we thought the world
was changing)
a prophet come
revealing (us) the truth

how can you know
I’ve wondered (so)
spent my best repenting
words were never long
tho others lay
folded (as a letter)
into my wilderness
made of heart –
(as dreams were) fell away

lingered now
a sacred place
almost (but not) forgotten –
to find my way –
(another  passing) through
jasper blooms to paths
of stone
(lovers sleep) in
silence
at last to know –
(the one I sought is) you

longer ~

of graces
unforgotten –
how it felt to say
your name
to look into the eyes
where sunlight set
fragile me
becoming of another
I am not
wasted tears
are rivers all
but dry

tarry here
a moment more
than I remember asking
press against
these weathered window panes
breathe into my longing
tell me something
sweet –
as storms are passed
and I the night
shall fill

briar blooms
in shades of red –
bittersweet blackberry
pick me not
the purple –
lest I bruise
with memory of springtimes past
there you held me
longer –
bound as life eternal
to places I am
you

(I thought) I knew ~

holdmehere

names have come
(more often)
to places
without none
dreams I never dreamed
would come (undone)
patchwork of the living
the coffee has grown cold –
as destinies (foretelling)
long ago

to wonder
(as I’m known to do)
where and when
and whether
the path was come
as (fated) – I to choose

the ways before
and all at once
familiar I am finding –
reflection
of a light
(I thought) I knew

here –
have you forgotten
the color of my eyes –
places (I am still)
I loved you so
long before the wondering
got the best of me
you were come –
(remembering
my soul)

nameIwrote
longing walks
familiar paths
where once we loved
the same
smoke rings settle blue
beyond the spark
ravens fold
their flannel wings –
allegiance to the crush
shadows cleave
to grieving –
memories of dark

it seems so long
the taking back –
how many passed since then
were seasons come
and cold –
our only fear
lay with me
to listen now
a song you used to know
pressed into the melody
of drumming
once held near

. . .

summer sense ~

silvermorning

eighteen miles
from where I first
 gave to love
a name –

I lay my burdens
down here
by the fence
wrapped in yellow flowers
a favored cotton gown
was painted up the same
as summer sense

pushed apart
by two and fro –
‘tween the rusty briar
of captive wheat
to wishing fell away
took a chance
on leaving –
of every place we wanted
to lay us down
(to find us lost)
this way

silver morning
sl
ppers –
such a simple treasure
of questions meant
for this –
for answers known
wrapped in yellow sheeting
kept us here much longer
than harvest moons
to carry –
winter home

. . .

not so very ~

callis

how near
the moment
passed outside
the window left undone
worlds apart –
yet only here makes sense

the distance
not so very –
as the promise of once more
were spirits come
to witness us
again

between the next
the last of never
was – a midnight pause
sighs are met with wonder
what we might

do with one more lifetime
trade for one more night
forgiven now
the sun
to leave us blind

of falling in
or coming back
no other to consider
the truth was always here –
and I was home

stay awhile
don’t be shy
I’ll share with you
my mother –
years will find
us closer anyhow

touch
enough for memory
will swell my heart
the moon-
save this place
perfecting us
to love

somewhere
eyes are watching
the heavens
for a sign –
winds to bear me
easy
to your arms

. . .

illusion of warmth ~

once

faultless
to leave me
the winter you loved –
is kept with a quilt in the barn
tho sometimes
I carry it –
home for the night
and sit for a spell
with your warmth

as lingered in moments
scraps of haiku –
verses spilled over
at the end of the day
was your favorite
peaches –
blueberry knew
of a time worth repeating
yet the same –
fell away

of leaving
I won’t get to ask you
another –
or when you’ll return
I’d watch way too long
for a star on the meadow –
of autumn come sweet
I’d forget
we were missing –
to dance
without song

as comforts
there aren’t many left to recall
the orchard since lost
to the passing of time
stories remain
of places
I am –
verses unhinged
by the absence
of rhyme

like the chill
of september –
a promise made true
stored with the others
the box barely holds
every piece
of my aching –
every blessing unwrapped
longing reminded –
how tender
the fold

. . .

alleluia ~

the stained glass
works of art
garner little sunshine
the marble inside
is dust-dulled

the faithful arrive only
for special ceremonies
in the meantime
there is no money to pay
the janitor’s insurance

fees should he topple
from the ladder twenty feet high
attempting to clean windows
I – like many

worship in distant words
a faraway ritual of my concocting
the private practice of prayer
only moves me —
its physical beauty
does not teach patience

nor how to leap
into the arms of a faith
that tomorrow will
indeed be brighter
because I fold my hands

mouthing alleluia
in time with ancient sacred hymns
that yet touch
a secret place in my soul
