the first to go –
the last to linger
faces
places
blur the line
eyes rolled back
and there the future –
consequence
of love’s design

dimestore pearls
and easy does it
spend the last
of me to go
somewhere down the way
of searching –
time will prove
you told me so

I’ll be fine
no cause to worry
dare I leave the night ajar
one more step
from here to never
given push –
one time too far

blackened beaks
and silver rudders
destiny denied to form
close as some
the shadow spirals
reason rides before
the storm

in the space
beyond my vision –
where the edge of night is pried
from places just beneath
the wet down world
as quiet weaves
I sit as one –
an almost ended light
close my eyes
and hear their tender
prayers –

embarassment of beetles
for the cricket
knew their shame
tho sworn to keep a secret
of the dark –
needles working endless
to make for us a shawl
would hide the night
and shade the face
of day

flickers of surrender
wings were beating blind –
denied the fault of others
fell before
as embers to the smoke
reflections of the lake
spinning top
is burdened now
with lace

while just beyond
my breathing
green her blue goodbye
as moonlight gives
my hiding place away
love remembers where I stood
beneath a winter veil –
smelled of pine
and spoke to me
by name

a sudden bloom
of autumn brushes –
silver ribbon wrapped
the blue
was pulled atop
my morning stutter –
bled my heart
with thoughts of you

pulled aside
the muddy shoulder
watched as life went streaming by
held for years
the need for saying
let me go –
or let me fly

take of these
these fragile pretties –
something more
beyond the rise
gypsy moon
and blackbird switches –
thorns grown over
sweet goodbyes

prop the window
up with promise –
drifting past
the place once knew
eighteen shades of red
to sunday –
somewhere now
they grieve the truth

bible verses
tattooed scripture –
rings my wrist
reminders still
of where the perfume
crossed my longing –
drunken skin –
impatient will

stolen clovers
luck for nothing –
crushed beneath my naked toes
searching signs
a black horizon –
start the wind
and let me go

…

of these ancient bones
and dirt poor roads –
paths denied me
leaving
were none to find
of left behind
awaiting to atone

as softly as a morning swoon
fingers to the curtains –
were lifted high the veil
of almost gone

speak to me of symentry
and places not forgotten –
leaning walls
and papers golden pale
spin for age the legend
of where we love forever
as distance I might come
to find you still

silver leaf
and poems started
now their jagged voice
betrayed –
light for me
the candle
was meant for kinder days
and where I was
unknowing – set me free

plant the seed
and crush the tiller –
seal the cross
with scarlet woes
mend the fence before I wander
back into –
the ways I know

. . .

pieces everywhere ~

take my rings
and buy a sunset
souvenirs of yesterday
sell the bed –
to give me heaven
flannel ships to sail away

brighter stars
beyond the ceiling
told me once
their every name –
take the silks
but the spare the story
softer now – the dying flame

promise sweet
as monday morning
turn the mattress –
write it down
where we’ll be
when next remembered –
love we made
of moments now

trade my locks
for winter roosters –
sell the skates
from down the hall
leave the door
a bit more open
lest I miss you after all

of consequence
and one time leaving
there the empty shelves
are bared
sunlight stills
the morning after –
kept in pieces everywhere

thought you knew
I’d wait another
lifetimes more without the proof
two steps backward
into shadows –
spare the love
but take the truth
…

to be sure ~

Of places remained ~
as fate to becoming
this one (of so many)
held part of the dream
From a sense of belonging
were we found to be treasure ~
and knew (as we know)
of lives passed between

Of memories shaded
death becomes futile ~
as babies reciting
their stories of earth
Of distance once more ~
on roads so familiar
rivers o’erflowing with wondrous birth

Of moments no longer
the ways through the past
or flowers forsaken
to seed
When holding as one
to life just beginning ~
as mother and father
our children indeed

The last of illusion
was starting to see ~
as eyes worked as one in the dark
As breath of the greater
in coming thus far
as journeys back through ~
one soul to embark

Of truth reconstructed
from feather and blade ~
water washed over by stone
From dreams of the many
one night
shall return ~
with lessons and letters
from home

In beginning another
from places forgotten ~
were parts of the whole
without memory
of more
Of time when for nothing ~
the rest we’ll remember
awaiting the one
when beginning
before

seeing in the dark ~

somebody said
I was destined for nothing ~
nothing they thought
when I came here to be
smaller than most
and telling of others ~
lives nearly gone
something living
in me

of the ways
I have wandered
dare I speak of them now
when the best I could do
would be show you
(somehow)

the patterns in chaos
in the rust ~ in the flaw
in blossoms held back
by the vine

of a hole
on the backside
of all you believe ~
a universe strung
by the weight of a dream

blessed release
to see in the dark
tho labeled as crazy
sometimes ~
howling at moons
and shifting as shadow
let loose one night
by the stars

a pathway unnoticed
by prophets and thieves
was left in the ashes
of fear and belief ~
by fortune and wishes
made one

would that I warn you
of how short
the night
mornings to tremble
when finding you gone
left to the sheets
of nothing worth keeping

~ was nothing you knew
all along

her hair was spun
of gypsy moths
and weaved with ribbon
ruby red –
her eyes
a shade of cappucine
gave life to every
dream or dread

she spoke in words
not one could know
a language
only she could speak
a universe
where all was love –
would curse the sailor’s
longing – weak

her fragile hands
a raven’s breast
fluttered soft the beat
of care
a blossomed white
from passions rose –
as essence bloomed
a lover’s fare

she breathed
ten thousand years of light
and knew of things
most men could not
she harbored tears
for moments lost –
and spoke with kind
of love
forgot

what time was hers
no one could say
another birth from dying crossed
what kiss was made
to give away

what ruby red
a gypsy moth

meets me coming back ~

tree lines
bend with shadows –
wrapped in summer fare
honeysuckle
mated with the vine
midnight swirls
of something shifts
backward to the black –
as gentle hands
remembered by the pines

freed again
to living – forgotten
now the ways
and just how cool
the dirt beneath my soles
running til the echo
meets me coming back –
into the place began
so long ago

red birds
raise the corners
and stretch the heavens wide
as waters pool
where beetles
first were seen
as bliss beyond the stillness
wakes to greet the sun –
rivers wash their sorrows
into green

angels sit in envy
for places I have touched
and words of silent meaning
grace my tongue
whispers fly
on pearly wings –
just above the pond
as beautiful
awaiting to become

clover sits
in four leaf sheets
and no one needs to count –
how soft the emerald reach
between my toes –
breezes grace the southern pass
turns beneath the canyon
sings the song
I hear by heart –
the only one I know

he couldn’t say ~

he swore
the buffalo were bigger
(tho how he knew – he couldn’t say)
sheets of storm
to claim the valley

nights
(they took his breath away)

was made a bed
of fur and needles
bear and bull
another claim
fathers lost (and fathers keeping)
watchful stars above the plain
spoke of times
the air much sweeter
mountains emptied blue and clear
sunlight fell to love
around them
whispers (only they could hear)

told of darkness
pressed to shadows
swirled in branches (cedar smoke)
someone came
the world to promise
with practiced pen
were lives rewrote
of far away (the leaving lonely)
left behind was paradise
ceilings kept a view
of heaven
longing pooled in sacred light

blessed place
of blood and honor
none could prosper
from disgrace

nights he wanders still (as thunder)
rolling herds of wind
and rain
