showme

will
and I wonder
to places unknown
forgotten the weeds –
my way back to home
a secret
unspoken
by lovers and thieves
echoed by crickets
knees
touching knees
a hymnal
of feathers
as light through the pines
souvenirs left by
the rain
where was I going
who waits the dawn
with promise
of heaven
to love me
again

Author’s Note: I love the woods and I love the shore. A couple of years back, while sitting on my porch, I closed my eyes and raised my face to the sun. But the breeze, he told me something more. In that moment, I noticed the song that is the fluttering of leaves. It is the same as the waves on the shore. I wonder who knew it first, but wonder not at the love that allowed them to share it.

how tender
these blessings of
sapphire and pearl
oceans singing
of leaves

. . .

of everything ~

still

he said
there’ll be another day
to wonder where you are
and just how far
from leaving me returned
when made your way
from here we stood
near and I your breath
a place between the living
you are missed
with rhyme
the same
as evermore
hurt beneath the heal
poems took my heart
to write them down

she said
but for a moment
eternity is proof
of all you said would be
before we were
counting steps
from yesterday
round and through my soul
one more pen
one more willing page
write my name
in cursive
letters fit with yours
lean into the silence
I’ve become
the memory of
everything
we thought we knew before

the memory
of everything
you love

new beginning us
remembered now
as one
were never more
but come as may
another we
begun
from stories
might some other tell
of nights
we dared not sleep
of mornings sweet
to lie awake
warmed by all
we keep

another was
unlike of all I’ve known
kept with me
a map of ancient roads
made of places
some have seen
few would recognize
whispered soft
the name of every star
spinning time
as ringlets
round your finger –
let me fall
into the place
where once you were
and I the proof
of home

sweetly

kept apart
another moon
and thirteen setting suns
bladeless shades
where winter
hides
her soul

perfume
of remember me
how it is
you can’t
recall a time of one
was all we were

spring
at last
is waking here
sometimes the morning
sings
with fairytales
ten thousand paper songs
held aloft by destinies
meant for us
one day

snow was not
the first
of tears we gave

youknewmehere

was it for this
a silence surrendered
– nights
when I can’t buy a dream
mornings find me
out on the porch
rocking alone –
eyes facing north
fussing with buttons
and cursing
sometimes –
to wonder
(and how I must do that
a lot)
haunted by traces
places untouched
fingers burnt
by beginning

. . .

no harm ~

I left my car behind in the parking lot, strolling in the mid-morning wonder that is April in Tennessee. The flowers are stretching and all around, blossoms adorn the trees where just a month ago, ice formed and birds fought for glistening red berries.

I juggled a cup of a coffee, my purse, and a book bag. But then I saw it – an almost perfect nest balanced upon a limb at the edge of the lot. I smiled and took two more steps before I stopped, put all my stuff on the ground, and dug my phone from the side pocket. I stepped a little closer and noticed there was a silent vigil on the nest, a sweet bird but an arm’s length away.

I took a couple of pictures, and another step. As I did, the bird moved a bit closer to the nest, as if to say, “be careful there, you crazy woman; these be the babies of wing’ed dreams”…..

It is indeed a sweet sweet life we are privileged to share. ❤

comein

someone made mention
of rings on the table
habits worn clean
to the bone
a rusted out latch
keeps no one from leaving
a whispered reminder
of reasons
to stay
where the fences
need mending
and water runs cool
sprung from a river
two miles ‘neath the porch
we watched the sun rise
another
one day
when spoke of intention
promise undone
by a change in the
weather
warm cotton gowns
I dared not replace
with the pretense of love
the essence of summer
left on the line
and a glass
of the best I knew how

whereIamknown

once was
a man
I never did know
my daddy
before
he fell into love
whiskey
and fifty two cards
more than most
a heart split apart
by the last
get me back
to a place
not for keeping
returned me
to find
forever had never
been lost
all that was mattered
to the ways
I had come
without need
for a map
or a star
wished upon
