of days when I knew
you were waiting somewhere
running your fingers
o’er words written there
of those I imagined –
I cling to them still
and sleep within places
you rest unaware

as one with a moment
I can’t be forsaken –
by changes in weather
a shift in the wind
of love without time
or need for becoming –
as is
I am there
in your places
again

of mornings some place
much nearer than now
to sit in the quiet of night
with your name
resolved to a feeling
(I can’t understand)
while others I questioned
each reason the same

from the places you are
the places of me
are times when you think
on your own destiny –
do you wonder (I wonder)
sometimes until dawn
where I am –
how I know –
what of us will become

as it is
it is ever –
even now I am near
as your hand to the pages –
as a smile to your tears

loving arms
to remind you –
as was once you did me
when the dark
was surrounding  –
(you were something to see)

like the end
a beginning –
both the same (to my soul)
a whisper of promise –
was a dream
taking hold

anchored by threads
of faraway seasons
veils pulled aside to reveal
the divine –
provision of poetry
and bright wooly winters
November new better
the passing of time

held by the truth
and counted as curses –
returned from the care
of hands folded two
love has but memory
of one to the other –
pictures of living
with love shining through

spare me the stories
of futures negated
by something that somebody told
mornings grown harsh
by the threat of another
let not this measure
make waste of our soul

two were remembered
by places uneven
and signs
kept by moments unseen
seasons revealing
the pages already
were torn from our keeping
as now we conceive

where were we started
when looking for answers
a question
of living – a coming back home
as a mist on the orchard
a frozen green apple
made good the foretelling
of winters to come

where did we dream
what the occasion
would lead us so far
from the light we had been
telling of times
we spoke without speaking
and ran without knowing
we’d find us again

threadbare ~

ten thousand years
are more or less –
the same as once before
I was
and you by some
another name –
forgotten to my bliss

burning sands
and chilly winds –
words the mayfly buries
for weeks alone
with no one home –
she waits to be
a bride

living long
in threadbare robes –
paths grown cold with longing
was come to share
a moment there
the start
of every end

knew you when
and loved again
was come –
as I was going
long nights warmed by firelight
morning to us all

rings and rows
of marigolds –
polished river pebbles
moonlight just as blue
as once we were

fall into
this willing you
of all I’ve come to follow
as whispers fell of
snowflakes into spring

wrap the winter
’round me now –
taste the name I’ve carried
near within your vest
my sweetest bloom –

still the heart
that beats the same
ten thousand years apart
tell me how you found
your way –
across an ancient moon
…

worth to confess ~

sweet the bough breaks
as innocence falls
as stillness asleep on the snow
cradled in arms
of once half asleep
and rocked as a baby
the whole world to know

the road back
the way come –
and who are we now
where is the place
we’ve come to endear
when darkness tugs hard
at the shadows of life
and all we have left
is the weight
of our tears

forgiven the promise
to never let go
to choose without choosing
our truth to profess
but once in the deep
a pounding so close
and moments no longer
with worth
to confess

of innocence lost
by the side of the bed
nightmares recover the worst
slept not in places
turned us away –
a smile in the mirror
for ignorance cursed

so heavy the burden
of taking no side
never noticed the faraway spark
eyes grown accustomed
to living a lie –
were changing our view
of the dark

til there in the quiet
a thought not erased
by signs of forgiveness –
the existence
of grace –
a well-worn transgression –
that nobody knows
when fell from the cedars
as a name
to the snow

westward back
to take my wagon –
twice as far I walked before
held in place by recollection
shadows rubbed
to rings I wore

married first
and then decided
where my love would lay me down
kept the best of wedding wishes
matching cups
and cotton gowns

smiles put back
with suitcase packing
set a course and drove away
once or twice
the rearview winking –
asking more
than room to stay

but never this –
the message failing
broken gate
and twilight tears
whiskey rings
to stain my table –
slept the night
beside my fears

where and when
the curtains moving
one more dance –
to save my own
as shadows of forever
shifting –
back the way I came
to home

take my rings
and buy a sunset
souvenirs of yesterday
sell the bed –
to give me heaven
flannel ships to sail away

brighter stars
beyond the ceiling
told me once
their every name –
take the silks
but the spare the story
softer now – the dying flame

promise sweet
as monday morning
turn the mattress –
write it down
where we’ll be
when next remembered –
love we made
of moments now

trade my locks
for winter roosters –
sell the skates
from down the hall
leave the door
a bit more open
lest I miss you after all

of consequence
and one time leaving
there the empty shelves
are bared
sunlight stills
the morning after –
kept in pieces everywhere

thought you knew
I’d wait another
lifetimes more without the proof
two steps backward
into shadows –
spare the love
but take the truth
…

fortunes more
than e’er I knew
or lines caressed my fingers
when sat inside
a candleglow –
as someone spelled
my name

aloud
was fate returning
as whispers – sinner – saint
as morning when the night
is settled ’round

and I with want
for more than this –
more than matching dishes
and acres
where the wheat
resolved to grow

hand-me-downs
and day old bread
who will miss me sunday
when down the pew
the plates are passed
again

smiling back
in buttoned lace –
boots I should have traded
but kept apart
were pieces
of their worth

give me grain
to grow the sun
wrap your arms around me
spin me neath the willow
supper time

drive me back
o’er dusted roads
and sing the ones familiar –
of destinies I swore
were never done

hold against your beating
the hand to fit
your hand –
scored by fate
as fortune
you’ve become

…

forgiven now
the sweetest cut
stitches formed of blood
the curs’ed class
of circumstance
and will that never would

forgiven
clashing angels
and nights they envied me
a moment of surrender
to sheets of destiny

forgotten trail
of breadcrumbs
across this lonely floor
were left by grace
another day
would bring you to my door

forget the past
I have no pride
would keep me from your shade
or mornings to awaken
by loving – unafraid

forgiven now
the truth undone
by life –
this split apart
reality made dearer still
than e’er the two
of hearts

as mercies spilled
to pages blank –
dreams to populate
with stories
of tomorrow –
forgiven now the wait

of kisses
I’ve returned a few
and kept the others hostage –
fanning flames
and warming winter nights
memory of how they passed
as one became another
and soon I had no want
for turning back

of longing
where the leaving spent
a night when none were near
and thought to more than once
I spoke your name
as stolen was my breath again –
life beyond my living
as love before I knew
of why you came

of summer sparked
to mid july
when junebugs chase the luna
autumn waits his turn
to share the bliss
give me now a place to lay
and light to press around –
save for me the wonder
of your kiss

for all I am
the more I will
of places yet I’ve never seen
held within this fragile beating
lives beyond
the reach of dream

for more than time
as thrice discovered
there I’ll find you
waiting still
held with promise I remember
every mystery
revealed

of moments held
so few for keeping
more than nights
for slumber come –
wishes spent on falling embers
stir the starlight
into dawn

for every now
my past was fated
as memories survived the fall
whispers of another sleeping
lifetimes since
I scarce recall

of choices made
some other choosing
morning falls against my place
names rewritten
someone misses
where I loved – I live
always
