still life

garner these sins
as if there were none
kept in a box
neath the bed

wrapped in brown paper
cellophane sleeves
resistance
so easily mine

guarded acceptance
as once stained the lips
are now but a small
recompense

for stories unwritten
held us in place
with pieces of twine –
and yellowing
tape

. . .

the last hello ~

sometimes

between the passing
month to month
may to january
were moments
kept to heaven –
by the way I said your name
the same as wild blueberry
muscadine
and peach –
cut my tongue on briar
burrs to skin

the last hello
unnoticed
thought there’d be one more
or two –
left the door unlocked
the windows bare
fashioned me
a favored key –
and hung it round your heart
kissed the place
of lullabyes
nonstop

of mystic ways
I held no sway –
knew not of the seasons
or whether love
could live beyond this dream
remembered as a whisp
of smoke
floated blue above us
strings to tie forever
to my soul

. . .

unlearned ~

2011
yes the only
answer –
were questions sure to fall
three feet high
and tearing at my knees

seems the years
grown bolder –
an eager course for fate –
tho not so much
my own

bereavement come

another
kind of wisdom –
 sweetest lessons
born of pain
which is right
was never meant
and there we learn
again

carved into
our yesterdays –
tomorrow stands the door
when swore us
to forgetting

every dream we held
before

wherever love
is written
was for a while we fell behind –
dared our heart conceive
of kingdoms come

misty shades
of living passed
ages into ache
the night is gone
in search of ancient light

another time –
were only this
to lay your head upon

. . .

stay ~

captive

stay the winter
share my bed –
to linger past the memory
of snowy blankets
melting all around
tempt me not
the taking leave –
stay to greet the spring
choose me
but for longing
unconfessed

stay the time
of silent speaking
dusted smiles
and rhyme –
hours without thought
to say a thing
solitaire and I don’t care
where tomorrow goes
an abandoned well
will stories tell
the same

stay the right
for wronging –
let the candles burn
lean into the marrow
of surprise
smoke rings
rise familiar
as storm clouds from the east
lightning strikes
reflection to your eyes

stay the want
for wilderness –
the forest of my fears
has pushed beyond
the borders of my breath
stay the will
for one more day
pull the blankets ‘round
listen as december
melts away

. . .

darling ~

graces given

diamonds rip
the rafters –
and let the sparrows in
muddy straw
and no one saw me there
trading stories
one more time
of who we were before
led us now to riches
a sky of royal flame –

daffodils of ancient lore
by others I was known –
a line was drawn
between eternities
written down
to virgin sands –
washed beneath the flood
ages bent to stolen
reverie

deeper there
the river swelled
darling of the forest
sang the day to sleep
most every night –
swam within the milky way
and wondered where I’d be
building nests
and pressed against
the sky

say my name
this one more time
the way you did that day
as shadows fell
and mixed with maple leaf

as echoes
just becoming
I would gather
from that place
and wonder more than why
the sunlight played

in prisms
of a rainbow
in tenderness (desire)
were memories I’d sworn
to never speak

of where to go
or will to keep
the notion of forever
a time no longer ours
no longer come

eternities
I’ve known a few –
but that one is my favorite
stretched to hold
a lifetime
more or less

remembered now
a moment
made from everything –
was given word
tho something more
unsaid

a shimmering
of sunlight –
reflection in your eyes
reminder of a place
I’d known before

say my name
this one more time
the way you did
that day

. . .

there’s a rub
to the waking
when the stillness
seems old ~
when last night’s
surrender to dreams
carries on

the coffee
indifferent
to the ways I have come ~
and places unnoticed
on the way back alone

before I was fallen
my sorrows to spread ~
when searching the darkness
to free ~

pieces
I should have
committed to writing ~
robbed of the story
ne’er meant to be

as I was
for a moment
somewhere still I remain
where we spoke
of lifetimes ~
now faded away

and held
for eternities
breath unto breath ~
so easy the falling
do you remember
that day

this way ~

meet me
where the sunrise
burns dreams
into the waking –
yellow as the roses
yesterday

were begged forgiveness
fell apart –
as petals on the counter
before the words were gone
and truth betrayed

meet me
where the waters roll
backwards to the glaciers
as cold to polish black
the river rocks

dream
and tell me
where I was
before you found me waiting
still within the first to rise
breath undone
by light

save for me
the final dance
though I am not a dancer
practiced more to verse
than e’er to sway
of arms around me
reaching
to keep my heart aloft –
hands to hold
as wishes tucked away

a picture postcard
kept in place
by something more becoming
for years I will remember you
this way
constellations shining
in the light behind your eyes

evermore resounding
in words we couldn’t say
