within the depths
of aging hearts –
are memories of love
though some a ways have gone
and paths grown thick

so few without
a name recalled –
for where they sleep (I wonder)
with pieces of my past
to resurrect –

in stillness now
a soldier lies
beside a fallen angel
while rows of plastic roses
grieve them gone

wherever grace be given
their silence warms the breeze
a kiss to seal
(stories left untold)

forgiven me
these rites of life –
might I their voices carry
o’er words another saved
of times to tell

bring them back
with tears of truth –
midnight recollection
of places come to light
within my own

let not them rest uneasy
or music be denied
a place to play
beyond the moss –
where lies eternal love

frighten me
the mirror was –
a friend before the light
when by the by
in shadows turned about
I thought of you
forgotten in the rush
to run away –
do you miss me now
in places you can’t stay
the roughness where the scar
was worn –
a curve beneath the bone
tears that filled my eyes
whene’er you smiled
spend with me
a moment more –
and beg me then to touch
the worst of you –
the best I came
to love

were we ever here (I wonder)
sometimes I look for signs –
a tell-tale love that left itself in crumbs
ribbons worn to branches
smoke to hide the blue –

letters carved a season to the bark
pieces floating elsewhere
out beyond my sight

imagined I a place
where I retrieve
the message that was written
words as silence ring
but I remain no different
for the proof

wherein the vault of yesterdays
are photographs of me
a then I could not pass
to meet me here –

highways once converged
along a lonely stretch of dirt
tis not the evermore
I wished to know –
but something more than whispers
more than markers made

chiseled as a rite into the stone
reminders of another me
a time before I came
awaiting there for signs
I couldn’t see

silver queen

grant me now
this moment rare
when all the world goes mute
though somewhere I can hear
a symphony
but know I not the rhythm
or whether meant for me –
haunted by familiar melodies

of crickets on the orchard
wing`eds come to roost
stars – I know them all
(as they know me)
places on the hardwood
I could trace them (in the dark)
for times I’ve spent alone
they waited me

and worried not
the lateness of the hour
opened every window (let me be)
took me from my brokenness
swore to help me fly
kept to watch me over
in the darkest storms of life

nights I would not walk
to find myself

of all I know –
the love they keep
would never let me fall
or change the crops
from silver queen to sweet

seasons
have no purpose here
(I am always spring)
splinters worn away
in coming home

from here to there
forever seems
no different for the distance
will questions rise
or longing leave us be
for lips to taste
the evening air –
wherever thoughts are scattered
another sun
returned to touch
the dream

a passing by
the window –
a voice I knew somewhere
when traces of another
moments spent
concede to consequences
and unlike times before
have brought me back
awaiting winter’s chill

returned to love
within this realm of being
the night was gone
before I knew your ways
how is it lives have come
and gone – dreamed
while I was sleeping
I knew you then –
a sweeter evensong

when loved before
was breathing just this easy
the key was lost –
but I had sworn to find
souvenirs of reason come
(am I the only seeker)
stood the night
and waited for the dawn

wherever truth
is waiting –
shall think of you
(the same) and worry not
when dreaming
brings you round

ashes melt
as snow wafts o’er the valley
the river’s up
I smell familiar seas
verses meant for keeping
(I remember)
tis time to turn –
forever waits
for me

when once upon another time
I reached to find you home –
as close to this
the skin that seals my drum
as light unto my emptiness
you came as summer sweat –
rain to cool my fevered brow
sometimes

whenever night
your music fills –
and all I know is love
a verse or two
still written on my soul
dreams where we are touching
spills to light my face
smiles –
no matter what the world might bring

longer than the moments kept
lifetimes passed between
eternities –
yet you remain the same
a trace of something magical
amazing gift of truth

love you are –
breath you are
to me

came the words
unwanted
for lives were not my own
and ears were pricked awake
by thunderstorms
lightning flashed
as dragonflies
were swept into the black
and somewhere
promise melted
to a sigh
with no one left to tell
just how the story started
of how it felt to know
the past was gone –
better now remembering
years forgiven years
jars of age old harvest
hands beneath the page
winter blows against
this house
and I am (soon) reminded
of lips that would not move
without my pen
awaiting now
another story starting
with ears to pry
yesterday to speak

already knew ~

from silence
was delivered
one word above the still
please –
and I would listen
for an answer to my will
something more
worth coming back
would wait in patient grace
for proof
someone had heard me
in worlds beyond this place

I must be loved
I must exist
as someone else had dreamed
was offered me
a message of redemption
thought unseen
a light to glow into the night
will cling to every bough
til none were left
but those without the fear
to wonder how –

shall love endure
when prophets sink
beneath the weight of truth
I can’t recall
the reason I was come –

rocked against a song
already knew

swimming ~

I know this song
the sound of leaves
whispers fill the forest
I close my eyes
and hear the evening tide
a melody remembered
is played again at twilight
once given to the trees
when love befell the dreamer
notes of ash and walnut
were floated out to sea
I wonder do they miss
the shore
another place they sing
