lonely wears
the dreamer down
one memory at a time –
skies above the barn
are burning grey
heaven writes
but once a week –
how is it
now I’ve gone
from where I stood
– another
willed away
lessons keep
the night awake –
learning us by fault
when memorized
the joys
one heart can bring
life resolves
to start anew –
in leaving not to go
time is stopped –
but that don’t mean
a thing
for moments
more than falling down
were getting up again
as strange
this want for living
sorrow sworn
for time’s constraint
I have not words –
no curse of tiny white
– reasons come
before the path
was worn
. . .
author’s note – the photo is of
the caney fork river following a period
of heavy rains – regardless
the time passing – as one
we remain

for lack of words
longing fits
a favored pair
of mittens –
– essence born
of places I am known
for lack of faith
I swear I’ll do
whatever now is needed
– to run ahead
wherever time
is gone
were only this
the falling out –
and there
your need for talking
else silence
roll against me
in the dark
spirits shy
before the light
of evening on forever
words are lost
to wonder where
you are

whiskey
warmed in jelly jars
recipe for passion
as round
these golden embers –
flame restored
came as light from
ancient skies
memorized my lines
and rocked away
the night
outside my door
bring to me
your verses –
letters never sent
maps to mark the ways
we swore to find
close your eyes
forgetting me
let us go – the wiser
eternity at fault
for seeking
rhyme
quiet has no place
to keep –
colors crease the dark
as whispers
take the shape
of falling stars
hid within your worry
pressed into your need –
stories leave
by windows
left ajar
. . .

cherry blossoms
all but gone
april sans the park
where showers came
of lilac
shady elm
thinkers
cursed
with dappled light
wrapped in cause
for worth
meditation traded
on a whim
of strategy
as plan devised
journeys
without master
of ancients slid across
and back
this way
grey and withered
someone once
was traveled from the city
with need for more –
a time
I couldn’t stay
benches cry
of hasty weight
of hours come to measure
a falling down
another getting up
awakened
elder wisdom
to sit upon the lawn
with those who’ve learned
to catch
the setting sun

consequence
of faded troubles
evergreen against the black
listen long
no need pretending
was here we meant
for coming back
into this light
as one with darkness
take of all
but take my hand
walk with me
these paths of silence
close your eyes
to understand
were there rules
would care of living –
what of blue
this night defines
hereto words
the poet whispers
time is but a state of mind
love made less
with broken verses –
stories writ as ink to skin
tears foretold
of truths beginning
willing us to live
again
. . .

pines
are stretched beyond the fence
where almost
I’d forgotten
the place of dreams
a moment when I knew
of faith in everafter
even now
my heart is come
to sit the night
with all the stars
in view
named
for every passing
lines
across and back
blue the same as virgo
holy white
memories are gathered
for a time of sweet release
faces
unseen traces
of my past
swirls of day old coffee
await my coming round
dark is but a well
of wishes cast
. . .

soft the rain
of patient verse
of purpose
undecided –
fell against the light
and rolled away
who
I’ve wondered
how it feels
to know which way the wind
where north is settled
deep into the clay
silence there
the taste of words
your lips
where once my name
flooded all your senses
with hello
centipede
and crickets cry
paper
cayenne mornings
twilight leans into
the ways
I know

come the stars
ten billion nights
as east by west
was taken
thought I knew
of times we passed somewhere
adrift in space
recalled to grace
were moments here
to wander –
light is pulling candles
from my hair
nursery rhyme
of borrowed time
two steps back and forward
as wilderness –
so sweet the letting loose
when sailed beyond
my favored moon
colors dream of me
life is love –
with evermore
to choose
. . .

as chatters
of communion –
rush beneath the wake
heaven sleeps in silk
beside the grey
wing’ed soldiers
guarded now – the rights
of letting go
speak as one
within the serenade
as wings
above the rising
blush the story told
how fleeting we –
to fade before the light
were longing
but another –
price we had to pay
dreams are all we’ve left
to stem the fight
beg not
this moment’s best
to win –
our presence
to remember
the way the tulips
crowd against the lawn
the way the mourning
sits atop
sheets of shining steel
to grieve the missing soul
his only one
