closerstill

I’ve heard talk
of endless black canyons
carved of the places
venus took mars –

longing to reach
every touch yet becoming
more than a thought –
more
than we are

how could you know
of the color –
my dreams
or how far the journey
from branches
to bough

the strangest familiar
the lights
brighter shining
a course neath the cover
of fathers ten more

a drink –
made of laughter
our spinning around
left dizzy by song
we sang
until death

as the memory
of some other star
we let burn
no different now
than a moment set free
by the giving of name
to a sigh
long ago

became of the still
a place I will go
when the night pours
to canyons –
the colors of you

. . .

forgiven ~

returntome

beyond the still
of sorrow –
eternal bleeds the red
discovered as another
perfect rise –
forgiven us
the getting on
of running us away
beaches press
a once remembered shore
feathers float
as suffering –
was here we meant
to lay
tears are flowing now –
a wiser sun
than e’er could be
forsaken
by the breaking
passed between
– the river rolls us
backward
to the rain

. . .

going

of worth
I have no season
no story left to tell
of roads I walked –
of lives beyond the veil
of streets
unnamed to history
a touch
recalls me still
where all I’ve known
of loving is revealed
into the page
where shadows fall
night birds weep and storm
into the swell where black
the locust swarm
with memory
of where I lay
and secrets I embraced
flannel sheets
are forests wrapped in lace
as once I was
remembered me
for reasons I’m not sure
kept within the circles
ancient sight
mystery of passion –
my wilderness afire
wings are raised
immortal to the night

. . .

Author’s Note: I’ve spent many a day
in search of an image for this, and have none to
show.  Only this.  Close your eyes – yes, that’s
the one.

rememberingme

beyond this sun
another wakes
with memory of the first
 – of ancient moons
made sweeter
by my thirst

beyond this light
a brighter way
than e’er I passed before
is kept awake
 – my dreams
of dreaming more

than once again
my love concedes
to plead
my case anew
reminders of a life
before I knew

returned by breath
a kinder truth
   than e’er my soul resist
  – beginning life
eternal
 from moments
such as this

wherestill

how tender
my returning –
a dreamer to the end
narrow ways
go dark
before the dawn
wielded me another truth
story holding still
weary grace
within my silence sits

calm
against the clawing
as ringing now
the bell
tho somewhere I am come
in search of light –
suffering a shadow
raked into the fields –
blazing red in grief
for winter golds

marry me
before I say
will be my last surrender
a garden of intent
is wilted there
cut the vines and lean the fence
near to worlds
of waiting –
as light to pierce
the only name
I wear

gathering

of the knowing
this is something –
(something more than we pretend)
the way is still
and here we are again
courting everafter
as the price for letting go
roads to gather
dust –
into our soul

patterns into stories
wishes into lies –
as songs to sing
(if e’er the lights go out)
held against the southern red
melted into clay –
secrets
spun with words
to kiss away

choices made
and losses lost –
burdens floating free
became a star
and there (I sew) your name
warm into my wilderness
breath against my sting
flowers float
(as silence)
into wing

sweetersummers

when summer rains
are drifted
further than the moor –
into the place
where night
grows shorter still

into a favored lullaby
passion pleads replay –
silent notes
are written
as balms to yesterday

purple blue horizons
are feathered
past our stead –
as early now the autumn
twilight glows

against the torch forgotten
– a starting over come
wings to paint in lilac
o’er the sun

souvenirs of living
stories catch the breeze –
as daylight glistens softly
on the lawn

angels dance
atop the bloom –
winter kisses swarm
pouring light into us
– shine the ways
to home

nearasnow

hope was born on a windy day
at seven p.m.
your sudden smile
illuminated the fog
of my ailing soul
heartache was an ever darkening bruise
that starlight could never heal…
your hands still try to work miracles
but you disappear as often
as moonlight on a stormy night
and through the ebb and tide of my need
you ride the waves of my salvation
like a pirate
caught between lust for rich horizons
and a part-time philosopher
in love with ideals

once

you stayed away
much longer than you meant
but I was waiting
near the window
(you could see me from the road)
and everything was still
the same
though years have bent us both
but something there
is just as it had been (before)
tho moments keep no pictures
of the past

I’d thought a time or two
of where you might have gone
did you make it to that diner
stayed up all night long
(to dance)
what engine held you closer
than I ever thought
I could
did you long for me
(forgiveness)
beneath a desert moon

I remember hearing
somewhere
you had lost your faith
and for nights
I prayed and worried of the road before
whene’er a storm would come
I’d speak your name (aloud)
and stare out at the darkness
everywhere
(and wondering)

it’s been a while
the place don’t look the same
(as then)
the orchard fell a year or so ago
the old porch swing
still sways (beneath the weight of memory)
there’s some things I don’t say
(I wish I could)

come inside
I’ll get some coffee brewing
what pride I may have had
was lost in yesterday
there are latches need replacing
and fields now gone (to seed)

I moved the bed
much closer to the window
I can lie awake
and count the stars
(you gave)

nothing’s changed
tho time has passed
(winters without asking)
no need to say
I’ve never locked the door
some might call me crazy
but most are gone from here

most all my life
I’ve waited for this day
you stayed away
much longer than you meant

. . .

once ~

when now
the stars are clouded
by wonder
what is gone –
ships to sail
and other lives moved on
shadows spun
to silken web –
one more
might have been –
was left behind
and waiting for us
then

mysteries
decided by the setting
of our sun –
names were never spoke
above a sigh
touch beyond
the reach of hands –
secrets whispered still
– longing soars
beyond familiar skies

pages yet
unwritten –
await another start
spilled as sacred ink
where none can know
what of worlds
returning
where once a shadow fell
light before the first
we came to hold
