might I wonder
even now –
to the ways
I might have been
tho far away
the evidence
of truth

reminders of kentucky
– red
above the pines
hurry me these lessons
to believe

you’d come again
to love me when
I wonder –
now I know
of words so few
remain as warm
my heart

where miles
and someone
understood –
ways beyond our way
across the creek
into an empty sky

leave
and I shall follow
in essence
known as thought
sense
to know –
the ways you’d find
me still

nowandthen

forget
of then
remembered when
we might have known some other
ways to go
the long way
leading here
distances becoming
the memory of more
trace to trees
dirty feet
and graces
holding near

the weary one
I’ve known a few
and more
I could not name
are sleeping
with the angels
yet tonight
safe beyond the reach
of words –
wooly warms
and warriors
listen now their prayer
for fearless flight

ages past
as nowhere else
they know
of ways I’ve come
and how the ache
has kept a page
within
salted by my sorrows
lifted high
my bliss
remembered me
of all I willed
begin

storybook

ivy claims
the dusty boards
run beneath my bed
beyond the dream
roots are taking hold
a somewhere
I’ve decided
is where I’ll spend
my nights

while keeping here
the best
of letting go

anxious breath
of moments left
of lifetimes there
we knew
calamine
and flannel
birch and bear
cold the ways of winter
let me hold you
closer dear

charcoal swans
are gathered
to the rise

silence
tells me everything
about the ways
you’ve come
and where you’ll go
when morning
shades my eyes

paths
of almost nothing
weave ambrosia
into light
and I am swept
with where you were
tonight

The way it was
as worlds became
a distant memory of a spark –
was slipped away
(as kiss to kiss).
Nothing left but light to dark.
Rivers rushed into the sea –
tempests chased the scent of rain.
Vessels formed of dying leaves –
where love has been
it falls again.

Voice so clear
though seldom heard –
words to silent breath ensued.
Before the place we were
is gone –
drums shall tell of longing (true).
Westward winds
to fan the same –
carries us beyond the wing.
Beyond the stories
never told
another comes
(don’t mean a thing).

I was here –
I know for sure
but not for long (as years define).
I wrote of something
I can’t say
was but a fire – that fainting line.
Never knew –
no luck with names –
was started somewhere else
(my soul).
I often wonder what will be
remained of warmth
when I am cold.

To feel again
the same (as now)
mesmerized by dancing flame
sleepless nights to wonder (still)
from where we were
and why we came.
There’s no way to know
for sure –
when life is passed into the mist.
Who will speak
with honesty –
of love we knew – this sweet abyss.

A kinder tale –
I can’t recall
but surely there was more (to find).
Fever burned forgotten lives
when came anew
my eyes to blind.
As yesterdays
(a watermark)
faded soft beneath the glow.
Forever dreams
in memories –
a spark ignited
long ago.

stilltheyknow

scatter to west
the weight of my winds
as proof of my lowly
remembrance
so dear was the tracing
of ways we were come
to begin
where we ended
before

from the road
even now
forgotten lays best
weeds spent with briar
and thorn
recalled to our worth
existence somehow
shall hold not my heart
for one moment
more

how fitful
this dreaming
this almost becomes –
as you martyr yourself
while I wait
skilled at forgiveness
tho never once asked
the nails almost bent
in surrender
of late

darling
the well
needs repair in the autumn
let not the leaves
have their way
to find what was needed
are souvenirs still
carved into places
time can’t betray

for another
once offered –
begged without word
the meaning of life
from a star
shifted the covers
while silence snuck in
left me a note
of your going
afar

the hinges
have rusted –
and there go the rhymes
tho echoed
by living –
the sharing divine
of a path
not so separate
as the ways you have been
a kiss waiting tender
your coming
again

into this one

yesterday
the sunlight tasted
pepper cantaloupe
tho last night left me not
a drop of wine
grieving for a poem wrote
a month ago last Tuesday
– thought you here
but now I feel
you’re gone

the way of
summer shadows –
straight back ladder chairs
black and white
photographs of then
cool beneath my memory
touch to pause
the same

are pasted to a page
I never turned

knewmewhen

for a while
it seems
the rain has come –
to wash away the river
sands beyond the banks
on which we lay
another time
of leaving you –
how it was that way
to find us here
no longer now
the same

for ages
I was waiting –
and still you stayed afar
to wonder
did you know
how could you know
there were roads
no less forgotten
 somewhere weeds to grow
around this bed
blue within your smoke

one more lie
to listen –
save your favored time
rush ahead –
to claim this touch
divine
of worlds
I have no vision
beyond this one we make
dream me now
and I will stay
awake

  . . .

morning fits
with amber hues
her memory of night –
of places left
beyond the reach of dreams
where stories fell in secret
pages brittle bound –
light was lost to
moments
burned between

longing wakes
before the sun –
pulls the covers round
til supper is grown cold
and windows black –
living tends to hurt
the least
dying feels so wrong –

time
– it seems so different
looking back

someoneIusedtobe

neath the clutter
of september
the roof is hanging on
weathered there as passion to exhume
soft a bed of feathers
wilts within the storm –
where watches now
the blue become
the moon

pardoned
every reason
for where and when we were –
easing into everything
we fade
passions wear to wanting
for years beyond the ache
how we were
before this mess
we made

lashes
blink a sure escape
sorrows without shame
locks were never meant to keep the door
crouched against the memory
of almost all we had
maybe I’ll remember
something more

than ashes
in my coffee –
longing come and gone
dishes without match
to all we said
leaving gets forsaken
by the want to stick
around –
sheets no longer fitted
to the bed

breathless

soft the rain
of patient verse
of purpose
undecided –
fell against the light
and rolled away

who
I’ve wondered
how it feels
to know which way the wind
where north is settled
deep into the clay

silence there
the taste of words
your lips
where once my name
flooded all your senses
with hello

centipede
and crickets cry
paper
cayenne mornings
twilight leans into
the ways
I know
