within the quiet
where I live –
as graces known before
autumn spills around me –
leaves are falling sore
to bring me now
into this still
where chilly secrets lay
as something more
than e’er my words could say

a wanderer
to southern winds –
a time of fates aligning
as streams to cross
and rhyme to understand
kentucky wears confession
of the pieces
to my heart –
and gifts the light
within my
soul to you

counted one
the end of me –
chapter twenty nine
as postage worn
reminding you of home
voices of forever
ring within my sound
a laughter seems to echo
now in dreams

dear and dearest
who am I –
and where my truth is come
does mystery await
the seeker find
weaved within these ribbons
of auburn silver
blue –
stars begat
the endless sky
as nights are winking true

ancient ways
of tender ache –
a time of consecration –
became these hands
to pull the night around
bring me to the edge
of sight –
return me now
your longing –
a whisper once
remembers still to come

. . .

what is it now
your longing heeds –
chasing milk with whiskey
seen me ’round –
in places I have been

another me
to lost haiku
three five three
no more –
a passing through of wisdoms
alignment with your core

stall the dreams
to feed your story
something someone said
of times you might have waited here
eight long nights
in bed

one more loss
to bust the hinges –
take the night but spare the blame
come the one to know your purpose
as sworn by fate
to wear your name

four more times
ten thousand reasons –
planets split the night with care
tell them all
you wondered far –
forgotten why you tarried
paths don’t seem the same
without me there

. . .

north was south ~

the pages
so much fuller now
than e’er my pen could say
and rhyme makes nothing much of sense
before I pull away
tho I for one
without the words
to tell you what that means
I’ll write it down
and leave it as a message
to your dreams

when bent to fate
we made a place –
no one dared believe
would make it through the coming back
another time to leave
as none so sure
the ways to go or when we’d wander home –
north was south
and south intent on letting
love alone

of redbud rest
and night bird nests –
pancakes rolled in butter
and all day long to sit
against the sun
married once
and let it be
the place for coming quickly –
begged me let forever sleep
in faded cotton gowns

of other times
a photograph or two
I cannot find –
black and white are pasted
in the space between the lines
with none to know
so few can tell –
of meant to be just right
as fingers trace
the softest grey –
eyes to hold me tight

I’ll take my chance
and stay the night –
wrapped in silence still
held beneath the rafters
with truth
beyond our will
forgotten every warning
bet you knew my ways
back then –

words were never given us
a place to pass again

of moments
slowed becoming –
as the rising of the sun
ripples spread
to circles
left of dew

was destiny
forgiven –
to the places
I have come
as those to keep aside
with names I love

of frightened birds
forsaken flight –
dark where tears reside
daughters dream
in storybook of lives
they never had

silent as a sin
confessed
of memory set free
and with my own
in heart –
their song to beat

sleep again
in stillness
where innocence befalls
as feathers scored
against a sudden moon

tumble
with divine reproach
longing to the sun
dreaming still the night
of wings on fire

. . .

one more ~

Had I more
than one more day
and one more spring to bloom
– a perfume born
of every sweet goodbye
Had I feet for walking back
home another way –
truth to be remembered
love beyond my life

Had I more
than one more heart
one wish to grant the stars
– and time to choose
before my time was gone –
Would lie beneath
the oldest oak
to hear his stories told
and dream within the comfort
of his arms

none to blame ~

daylight spills
as fallen peaches
summer shades
seem muted now
wrapped in sleeves
of moss and denim
dreamed me back
this way
somehow

been a while
since last I saw you
someone said
you weren’t the same
who can ever know of freedoms –
moments passed
tho none to blame

brittle branches
bent for dragging
tempted not this time to go
back into the trust
forgotten –
western skies
are clouded so

goodbye sits
in favored places
tempted by the dawn to rise
one more spring of everlasting
sworn to picture –
close my eyes

echoes
left by Sunday morning –
gloves to hide
these signs of age
lost the will
for understanding –
else the dreamer
dream always

fourteen stones ~

other times
of those I knew
much more (than I could see)
how swift the words
to take me by surprise
(wished for more)
than one last time
could never hold my reason
fell to places
just beyond (your eyes)

tangerine and jasper suns
muscadine and paper
was more (to me) for knowing
a safer side of truth
without a plan to understand
when told of ancient places
ribbons now (the color
of my shoes)

loving roads
and fourteen stones
between the house and heaven
rows and rhyme
to screen doors shut (behind)
mysteries of make believe
who are you (I wonder)
took the road for leaving
with something (still)
to find

morning shakes
as living takes
a sunrise (more than needed)
to lie against the night
and count my scars
once or twice the coming round
my wilderness to wander
slept beneath (the window
talking with) the stars

secrets spared
the room to share
and some things can’t be given
e’er presence
give us lives (to comprehend)
mourning doves confess to love
and wait the night another
as quiet stills the twilight
with knowing you
(again)

dearest ~

fertile now
these cotton fields
endless rows of waiting –
sometimes the stars
sit low within her legs
counting back with disbelief
nights before
the harvest –
barns already empty
apron worn to rags

frigid halls
and ice cold floors
chatter of the aged
men to speak of women
down the way –
dreamers sleep in twisted knots
whispers of another
and what became of heroes
blue and grey

dearest thought of
morning strolls –
rusted nails and ribbon
boxes rift with hats we never wore
stretch the line
from post to porch
mark the miles for minding
carve our days
and make of love
our chore

renew the vow
of infamy –
seven more than sisters
held to certain fortune
I remain
silver spoons
and let my lesson
keep me from returning –
dared by demons
watching now
to know the way
I came

in the space
beyond my vision –
where the edge of night is pried
from places just beneath
the wet down world
as quiet weaves
I sit as one –
an almost ended light
close my eyes
and hear their tender
prayers –

embarassment of beetles
for the cricket
knew their shame
tho sworn to keep a secret
of the dark –
needles working endless
to make for us a shawl
would hide the night
and shade the face
of day

flickers of surrender
wings were beating blind –
denied the fault of others
fell before
as embers to the smoke
reflections of the lake
spinning top
is burdened now
with lace

while just beyond
my breathing
green her blue goodbye
as moonlight gives
my hiding place away
love remembers where I stood
beneath a winter veil –
smelled of pine
and spoke to me
by name

so still ~

as I was
I am still –
were a dream
and I made real
come this moment
start me clean
take of naught
the hurts unseen

of forgiveness –
right from wrong
psalms unread
redemptions song

fold such tenderness
around –
breath to breath
as loving bound
of yes and then
another will
this truth become
as love revealed

of this no more
than love I give
as I was once –
so still
I live
