sometimes
I awake
in the still sweat
of night
– called from my sleep
by your voice
as love softly spoken
echoes somehow
to fill every shadow
– the long miles
between
as memory wills
truth unto silence
an ache
sworn to listen
lest slumber return
as darkness
to squander
the courage of morning –
a soul never trusted
to dream

failing now
the chilly grip
of cold
the winter fingers
are warmed to life
by memories of spring
a blushing pink
umbrella
is refuge for the worn
while orchards wait
the hum of honeybees
nature wills
the letting go
with promises of time
as black
the berry wakes
beside the thorn

Author’s Note: The telling of Spring is everywhere this week. Just yesterday I pulled to the roadside and counted 24 deer in the field near my house. Sunlight sits in pools where ice has only recently melted, as babies remember the way back to places they’ve never been. *sigh*

I’m the path
where least expected
you found your way
to home
trees the shade
of summer –
breath the same as wind
framed a certain
dreamer
starlight in my hair
to know
as you were knowing me
again
the best
of times
returning us
as cold hard earth beneath
the place you lay
your head
I keep my heart
pressed against the places
still as you were then
finding in a memory
another we
begin
. . .

twilight
and what has
this moment forsaken
a far distant
morning
as written to lace
with whispers
of where we might be
come forever
– out past the edge
of beginning
retraced
a heaven
relenting –
from shores of just now
ages
and when will I know
I am found
in the taste
of your telling –
the sweat of the night
reaching
beseeching us
one into light
. . .

where was I
when shadows crossed
into the darkest night
whispers held
of one more faraway
a name that knew
no sweeter tongue
than memories to taste
eyes denied
the light of
one more
day
where was I
when you came for me
a snowflake on a breath
of spring
a paler blue
of robin’s egg
held the blossom near
a bud beneath
the sun drenched sky
a wish against
the wing
. . .

how much have I
this world to cleave –
a passing glance
or verse
some wayward call
I’m coming home –
a place
I’m known
for leaving
a silver sky
of fated blush –
and thorns
I’ve learned to love
pages writ
and I for one
returned
finding now
the same as then –
a forest blooming rare
– a way
where only I
the story knows
shall make again
a sense in all
with reasons why I go –
lights where
some are burning
to fill the path
below
