For this moment
of moments –
eternity waited
giving us room just to be.
Circles now spreading
our fate to discover –
but always we sit
with sweet memory

of the days just before
in places we wandered –
in joys that we shared
(none can take those away).
Tis the way we were guided
by stars barely crossing –
as years will remember
a smile
not the day

or the season, the tears
(so demanding).
Just a face bound to grace
we might never deserve –
(but we do)
and we will
for we love without wanting
more than this
that we keep
in the stores of our heart.

Can’t be lost on the way
to the one
we become –
or replaced by some other
(we don’t understand).

Love remains
in the truths
we leave in our passing –
years from now
just a word

– just a smile.

Author’s Note: Written for a friend who struggles to understand
an unfamiliar path, and hurting words from those she thought
she knew best. Ultimately, we choose what we keep. The rest – we set free.

as you know me ~

in the orange
of the lilies –
do you find me growing there
wrapped in vine
the shade of april moss

whenever night is come
into the shadows where you lay
do you dream that I’m the sun
and take me in

in the lullabye
that carries you
before your eyes awake
do you wonder to the me
that rests beside

or linger by
an empty field
so sure you saw me there
walking tween the rows
of bergamot

do you worry of the notes I left
fragile leaves of time
or nailed against a bridge
you burned before –
do you see the signs
(do you know the way)
I came to find you waiting –
as the final wash of tides
into the bay

do you hear my voice
in private –
some faint amen I spoke
hastened by a prayer to recollect
the rest we knew
the last to prove
there would be no other ‘other’
no fall me down
to pick me up
again

do echoes sit the places
where we gathered by the noon –
will life return
before the wind’s caress –
what of us is left to be
when everything is gone
will then the orange
bloom within
your vest

or cling to that which
beats within –
tho covered now by scars
whene’er you see the dove
without a song
will you know me
(as you know me)
in the way the briars sting

to close the night
before the sun gets in

fireflies at twilight
hands on the bible
a smile passed for trust
in between
no need to spend time
on the past unimportant
as the color of paper
neath words left unsaid

thirty years gone
since the season for leaving
fifteen more
than my mother was then
but the eyes of the soul
keep pictures much longer
a tear brushed away
not in time

and truth sealed tight
how many I’ve wondered
poison the sound of my name
falls to the reason
for waiting much longer
than the need to be known
by the curve of her arms

a baby once more
the future unfinished –
grace for another
of gifts passed between

Author’s Note: The relationship of mother to daughter is a cloth
weaved of many threads – love, faith, sorrow and forgiveness.
Because we are the same, we think we know things the same. The
reality is that we are as different as woman to man, wasp to
a firefly, a kiss to a curse.

to come along
as I was called
(sometimes before the sunrise)
and working then
for ways to understand

confessions of another sin
of wanting more
than lifetimes –
with reason to remember
where I’ve been

as quiet stirs
the midnight ’round
I wait up with the wonder
as sure will come
the dream where (still) I live

the house
the yard
the leaning porch
chickens never aging
(I wonder to the places they belong)

who’s to say
and what of me
could tell (and not sound foolish)
to know each step
and where the stone is gone

my hammer weighs
against my breast –
the barn door needs repairing
(and once or twice
the gate’s come off the hinge)

breezes blow me north and south
most nights –
right through the middle
roosters sit in rusty trees
and curse the early sun

splintered rails
and knee-deep weeds –
fruit jars filled with wishes
dancing rooms
(no need for shoes)
the rent has all been paid

I can’t be sure
the neighbors watch
my coming back for going –
were not for grace
I’d leave the night
for home

spare these hands
the writer’s cramp – retracing
broken promise
spare these eyes
the hurt that they have seen
spare this heart
an emptiness (for reasons I can’t say)
that I might tell of autumn skies
and stars that burned away

spare these words a lack of rhyme
curs’ed for a reason
as destinies retold
of lives gone by
spare this soul the winter’s cold –
without a time of touching
a kinder place
to lay me down –
and will to wonder why

of all that I’ve known
and places passed over
on the way to become
who I am –
there are moments (so sweet)
I can barely remember
without breaking down
o’er their beauty

and the truth reconciling
to seasons of light
writing my verse to the dark
speaking in whispers
as hands (now to hold)
where others were passed
by the wind to the sun

days counting more
than a measure of breaths
words spilled to pages
we kept
dreams came around
to remember my name
as moments were stretched
‘cross forever (one day)

no less for the wanting
eternity seemed
but a start on the way to begin

lines trace the edges
of some not forsaken
of all I have loved
to the map of my soul
no matter the distance
a thought bears me still
to the places I am
bound to thee

Almost three years ago, I decided it was warm enough to cook outside on the grill. When I opened the lid, however, I found that birds had started a nest beneath the lower grate.

No problem. I got my gloves from the garage and carefully removed the top grate and then the nest, relocating it to the lower branches of a nearby Evergreen.

Two days later, I went to use the grill again and discovered that the eager couple had been at it again, although they hadn’t gotten very far in two days. I was able to just clean what bit of straw and paper they had out without much trouble. That was Wednesday.

The following Sunday, I tried again and surprised the happy couple in the midst of putting the finishing touches on their nest. They froze in mid-activity when I opened the lid. I quickly shut it, and stood for several moments with my hand on top – listening for signs of distress.

That was three years ago. I haven’t used the grill since, and instead, each Spring I sit in my kitchen and watch the growing family of wrens making multiple trips to and from the fields, the trees, and the yard. They have quite successfully traded in their simple nest for a two story townhouse with loft.

When I am lounging on the patio in the summer, they are continuously in and out, and I occasionally catch them peeking out from one of the side air holes. While lying in the sun, there always a wonderful chatter coming from inside the grill. I convince myself that I am the topic of many a discussion – “she’s the one.”

Last Sunday after a stressful morning, I carried lemonade to the back patio and watched as the parents made trip after trip to the yard, the trees, the field (anywhere there were treats to be found) – listening to the eager chatter each time they returned, to go again. In no time at all, I’d forgotten the reason for my distress.

I love them and hardly miss the grill at all!

who are you
with feathers proud
come spread your home
to mine
as brothers
sisters
all the same –
within this one
divine

the door is locked ~

was there time before
you made of this a choice
and passed beneath the window
without a name

did you tarry
on the orchard
waiting way too long (again)
for something more to come
(it never came)

remembering another life
and words
you might have said
seems now the door is locked
the path grown o’er
and nothing you can do or say
will change the past
to be

can’t take it back
to starting –
can’t bring it back to me

when passed we have
into the place of tortured recollection
memories to haunt us
(fate we keep)
truth was more than honest –
than we could ever be
a weight too much
we carry to our sleep

take again
one labored breath
and let the rest be passed
gather now the moments
you hold dear
love remains
and nothing else
(nothing else can matter)
say it now
tho no one waits
to hear

Author’s Note – Inspired by a heart-wrenching entry
in a dear friend’s notebook of truth –
‘he is dead now’ from Scattered leaves with poetic imprints

a weathered brow
a broken fence
and paths I know by heart
steps above the water
glisten wet beneath the moon
voices rise in echoes
long forsaken

names reduced to memory
rust beyond the barn

shadows fill the spaces
once reserved for briar
was somewhere here
I noticed you were gone
in ways the geese were flying
winter blades to bow
darker stained the ribbons
to the wood

signs of you in everything
signs of life moved on

empty halls
of paper peeling
still the heart remembers
the sound of aching boards
beneath the dance

twilight spilled
through splintered glass
tied my mother’s apron
hand in hand
two steps away and back

the scent of rain
before a storm
lightning stilled the darkness
a moment clear
and all I saw was you

mysteries
as I’ve forgotten
other names and places past
miles have separated me
from love

I wish I knew
the path you took
which way to watch for mercies
lest you come again
remembered me
as home

seasons still to be ~

one more time
as living goes –
and I’ll be done with dying
come before in satin gowns
feathers are my fare
barefoot on an eastern lake
wilderness and wilder
stars against my shoulder
fell into the weave
and couldn’t go
(the way of mars)
across and back
wandering much further
than the earth was flat
(the promise come)
sail away with me
fingers splayed on lacey lace
playthings for the baby
fit with one (remember me)
lightening coursed within
touching breath
melting fire
burned into a moment
a scar to last forever
and seasons still to be
of all that was
no ‘could have been’
will matter much tomorrow
as brith returns another
without the father’s name
or where we passed
with why we left
though some my heart
is keeping
in boxes lined with cedar
and buried three moons deep
hyacinth and hemlock
weaved into my tresses
evidence of times before
beneath these same
bright stars
