I wish I had held
to moments more dearly ~
to songs that were played
on the breath of a sigh.
I wish I had watched
as wonder unraveled
and slept when it ended ~
a thought passing by.

I wish I had prayed
and waited my blessings ~
as sure in their coming
my delight when they came.
I wish I had dreamt
long past your leaving ~
and woke to a morning
where love still remained.

I wish I had spoke
when the words
were still tender ~
their silence remembered
to places I go.
I wish I had listened ~
did you speak of forever
in rhyme before reason ~
and wanting to know.

I wish I had gone
when the going was easy ~
the lessons to linger
not much to confess.
A road that was fated ~
the way back
forgotten.
My chance for redemption
not bartered for less.

I wish I had known
the real of what mattered ~
were moments pretending
or just passing through.
I wish I had held
a little while longer ~
e’er time steal the memory
of wishing for you.

save us
from the bitterness
comes as winter snow
pressed against the windowpanes
when nights are long
and cold

when holding back
means holding on
they warned us not to chance
would never be the same again
these lives of circumstance

the tell-tale sign
of autumn leaves
september claims the skies
a half an ounce of lonely
will drown you every time

when taking back
that goodbye kiss
there never should have been
distance passed
without a word
this silence to defend

silver threads
and thirteen moons
a key without a mate
held as truth a little while
these souvenirs of fate

you faced
the noonday sun
with wonder why you came
I was laughing
as the clouds rolled in –
and praying it would rain

when a moment stilled
eternity –
with memory of the fall
you were watching me
as I reached for you –
when nothing moved
at all

no mistaking of the promise
though left to wonder
when would be –
a goodbye kiss
for taking back
a date with destiny

beneath the bark ~

spring has melted
summer stone
as blossoms white
to grace the ground
crooners sit
the long night perched –
balanced by the moon

silhouette of shadow
against this pink charade
surely this –
our fate to know
one more blessed summer
met as one to count
of hairs
(every day) between

the rising
and the falling down
so glad we have no warning –
of when the bell
shall toll
and time begins

dusted light
before the dawn
yet eyes can see forever
as lovers press allegiance
to the blade

crickets
store their trumpets
and still their tired hands –
while luna slows her heart
against the wood

one more turn
eternal
as rings beneath the bark –
balance me beside the moon
as doves before
the day

I wish you knew ~

was a morning stilled
by dew to frost
steam rolled off a winter lawn
was there before
the sun woke up
I lay beneath the stars
at dawn

I listened hard
would comfort come
eyes closed tight,
my arms spread wide…
would I be blessed
to hold you still —
I spoke your name
and wept inside

I wish you knew
of thoughts unshared —
of love unspoke
my sore regret
for moments passed
alone and far,
I wonder —

will you find me
yet

a startled bird
a swirling leaf
a gentle sigh — as breath to skin

I sense you here
as warmth — the sun
is woke from sleep
to burn again

as soft the wind
the grasses lure
and golden flows the river
swayed against the backs
of skyward glance

such it is
the calm retreat
of thought before emotion
as voice remembered
after words
have gone

in the silence
do you listen
e’er your name be spoken here
or prayed the night
in private –
echoes falling
just as clear

as leaves
restore a blanket
spun to ribbons
for my hair –
will breezes blow
our truth to know
in pieces
everywhere

he couldn’t say ~

he swore
the buffalo were bigger
(tho how he knew – he couldn’t say)
sheets of storm
to claim the valley

nights
(they took his breath away)

was made a bed
of fur and needles
bear and bull
another claim
fathers lost (and fathers keeping)
watchful stars above the plain
spoke of times
the air much sweeter
mountains emptied blue and clear
sunlight fell to love
around them
whispers (only they could hear)

told of darkness
pressed to shadows
swirled in branches (cedar smoke)
someone came
the world to promise
with practiced pen
were lives rewrote
of far away (the leaving lonely)
left behind was paradise
ceilings kept a view
of heaven
longing pooled in sacred light

blessed place
of blood and honor
none could prosper
from disgrace

nights he wanders still (as thunder)
rolling herds of wind
and rain

with candles ~

let go
and I shall follow
as the shadow to your sun
and lie in sheets
the scent of maple leaf
converted as a lowly soul
found within the waters
and drifted out
as someone more
to sea

hasten as I beg you
do not let these
years be lost –
fated by the path we came
this meaning to forsee
press into
your aching heart
these hands
of solace sweet
and give them rite
to travel
every place
you long to be

given understanding
of another true desire
as passion laid to rest
when none could tell

kiss these burning lips
taste the name
I long to speak –
and share with me
the breath
that was surrendered
on our way

as one I have
remembering –
and nights I couldn’t sleep
for watching to the window
lest you come
standing near the lantern
while the porch
was worn away –
forsaken now the reasons
you were gone

lie upon the floor
these bent and broken boards
that I might be the waking
while you dream
take of me
the everything you swore
you’d never find –
sit the night with words
not written down

yearning ~

as mother blood
and sister time
wing and wind and water
come as one
with knowledge of before
was felt the same
has always been
 deep within the yearning
when writing down the ways
of every thing

inheritance
of living past
still uncertain signs
as black the cry
still rings above the blue
was blessing to the stone
bring to us
your holy stories –
our path to keep
was always there below

lest we choose
again as then –
tho still without believing
familiar clothes
were given us
to wear beneath our skin

as velvet scars
to cross the grain
where tender touch remaining
and nights
when e’en the dark
was pulled away

fearing not this loving ache
when turned from trust
to sparing
the pain to know
as knowing sometimes does

the same as first
you carried
with visions of forever
the sky would fall
and weeds would steal your sound

til every bed was dried
and ears forgot to listen
leagues to march
as wars
to break in two

rewritten to the memory
are lives we couldn’t save
buried now beneath the willow tree
and given none –
the name I speak
e’er the spirits linger
in keeping me with memory
words to understand

of lifetimes past
we were before
might the ink be lifted
to reveal another word –
beneath the word

written to a place
within the soul

mother blood
remembers now –
things we dare not say
sister time
returning us
into the love
we know

twisted locks ~

would dying change
the colors –
of daybreak on the pond
or move the waters
backward to the fall
would life go on
despite the urge
to end it all this way
as dew surrendered slow
into the sun

would leaving
be the answer
to questions I have asked
or roads be worn
apart beneath my feet
beyond the briar
nursed by time –
scratched into my skin
the memory of running
yesterday

would skies be sworn
to brilliance
before the darkness fell
or urge the daylight
burn beneath her flame –
forgotten now
the scent of rain
out beyond forever
tis where I wait
the night
without regret

would life be more
than I could bear –
or prayer my secrets fold
when given back
these souvenirs of love
twisted locks
of mystery –
braided by the dark
warm against the map
that is your hands

would ever I be
as one alone –
without these words to comfort
an empty page
and nothing more to write
breathe again
into the place
stories are remembered
walk the path
beneath my skies –
forsaken not
to roam

reminded of another ~

for a moment
of unspoken faith –
alone among the cedars
and dared my pen confess
of all I see

of light to split
the eager black –
a call to life somewhere
echoes ring of aches
upon the breeze

shadows shift
where spirits roam –
between the bear and afid
surely here –
the honey smells
of wine

where was I
when yesterday –
the need to find my keeping
when took to heart
a path beyond the pines

sweetly as a morning tear
I’m reminded of another
when once I stood
and all the world
was still

pages bent from aged bark
syllables grow silent
cast to words no longer spoke –
longing shall reveal

mists along an eastern ridge
where songs are being practiced –
nightbirds flee protection
by the sun

there as I was started
by these truths I knew before
turns with me to home
before the day
begun
