from places no longer
the one getting by ~
as silver blue veins
trace the will of the wind
and speak of forever
our longing to know ~
like the hush of a whippoorwill
coming to nest
and branches bent over
by the memory of snow

terrapin tea rose
and red scarlet laces ~
were bloomed from the shade
of maple and rye
burdens forgot to the passing
of seasons ~
lives resurrected
as love would not die

red tail renewal
preys o’er the pasture
as swoons for another
a thought passed
between ~
whispers of always
linger as loving
to lie with us down
on a blanket
of dreams

where kept to the memory
of unfinished language
and rest within moments
our reason to be ~
as teardrops fall
on this view of creation
love becomes light
and life ~
destiny

miles ~

there’s a rub
to the waking
when the stillness
seems old ~
when last night’s
surrender to dreams
carries on

the coffee
indifferent
to the ways I have come ~
and places unnoticed
on the way back alone

before I was fallen
my sorrows to spread ~
when searching the darkness
to free ~

pieces
I should have
committed to writing ~
robbed of the story
ne’er meant to be

as I was
for a moment
somewhere still I remain
where we spoke
of lifetimes ~
now faded away

and held
for eternities
breath unto breath ~
so easy the falling
do you remember
that day

counted wings ~

nineteen twenties
silver dollar –
and dolls without their clothes
quilts were stitched
and still they tore away

coal had streaked
the papered walls –
as black the skirted dawn
hands to work –
fell the night
to pray

kittens cried beneath
the porch –
lifetimes moving forward –
as tempted by our fate
to sweet desire

crooked shelves
and hand-me-downs
as starched the sunday morning
smelled of breeze
and counted wings
of fire

twilight pressed
against the day –
bring the children home
across the fields –
and places lay between

mothers stood
with aprons tied
just beyond the lantern
mouthed a prayer of thanks
for saints unseen

hearts were tucked
and souls protected –
e’er the night be lost
or heaven break
before the early rise

hands were making
shadows –
across a flowered spread
as living held our nights
together –
long before our sighs

winters unforgiving ~

came I here before daylight
alone with this sunrise
to watch the world
made new again –
and brushed across
the sky

more than once
was here I stayed
and woke
beyond the light
to places I had dreamed of
remembered to the night

I wondered
long to chances passed
and turns of wistful fate
of beauty
still becoming –
and I a moment late

tho not the first
I thought to times
my faith was sorely bent
to paths I might have taken home
and roads of good intent

how many dawns
spent looking back
without power to change a thing
to winters unforgiving
awaiting proof
of spring

get me back ~

lifetimes more
somewhere I know
I left you broken (left you blue)
fortune raised to falling light –
into these arms
of wishes true

wore your tears
against my heart
eighty years and not a one –
you weren’t a part
of me (becoming)
– jealous moon
of curs’ed sun

found a note
you left behind –
and pinned your voice
inside my sleeve
for every time
I heard your name
my breath was stopped
for love (to grieve)

was ever I
to feel this way –
or given grace
again somewhere
(take me back) into this life –
another day
to find you there

dare you break
of ties so frail –
as final payment lingers due
wilted roses
broken fence
and miles between
(I never knew)

where you’d be
this time around –
Kentucky roads
split north and south
the same old stars –
(the same sweet view)
and all the rest
forgotten now

once enough
forever still –
words are folded
(you can’t see)
pages rub (my memory raw)
as night returns
your love
to me

this way ~

meet me
where the sunrise
burns dreams
into the waking –
yellow as the roses
yesterday

were begged forgiveness
fell apart –
as petals on the counter
before the words were gone
and truth betrayed

meet me
where the waters roll
backwards to the glaciers
as cold to polish black
the river rocks

dream
and tell me
where I was
before you found me waiting
still within the first to rise
breath undone
by light

save for me
the final dance
though I am not a dancer
practiced more to verse
than e’er to sway
of arms around me
reaching
to keep my heart aloft –
hands to hold
as wishes tucked away

a picture postcard
kept in place
by something more becoming
for years I will remember you
this way
constellations shining
in the light behind your eyes

evermore resounding
in words we couldn’t say

he couldn’t say ~

he swore
the buffalo were bigger
(tho how he knew – he couldn’t say)
sheets of storm
to claim the valley

nights
(they took his breath away)

was made a bed
of fur and needles
bear and bull
another claim
fathers lost (and fathers keeping)
watchful stars above the plain
spoke of times
the air much sweeter
mountains emptied blue and clear
sunlight fell to love
around them
whispers (only they could hear)

told of darkness
pressed to shadows
swirled in branches (cedar smoke)
someone came
the world to promise
with practiced pen
were lives rewrote
of far away (the leaving lonely)
left behind was paradise
ceilings kept a view
of heaven
longing pooled in sacred light

blessed place
of blood and honor
none could prosper
from disgrace

nights he wanders still (as thunder)
rolling herds of wind
and rain

untangled ~

apart from everything she was
tis more she sits for dinner –
and stays with me
beyond the early show
sweaters born
the scent of moths –
and gems beyond the sparkle
combs that never knew
awaited there

along a stretch of cypress
polished by a wish –
and caught up in the magic
of her eyes –
a fleeting smile
a flash of grace
before the twilight faded
and trapped as she
within the mirrored glass

memories
much more than most –
crystal jars and perfume
shaded now
by aging faded grey
perfect pearls untangled
by the loss of one
the other
and wrapped beneath a net
of window’s wear

decades since we noticed
her words were almost gone
ink displaced by tears
and linen worn
a tragedy of letting be
the music of her voice –
so very few
are left to know
her song

cedar boxes
and old shiftrobes –
blankets more than winter
left beside the hopes
of yesterday
powdered white
the morning comes –
in traces of gardenia

brushed to gold
the weaver’s paradise

with candles ~

let go
and I shall follow
as the shadow to your sun
and lie in sheets
the scent of maple leaf
converted as a lowly soul
found within the waters
and drifted out
as someone more
to sea

hasten as I beg you
do not let these
years be lost –
fated by the path we came
this meaning to forsee
press into
your aching heart
these hands
of solace sweet
and give them rite
to travel
every place
you long to be

given understanding
of another true desire
as passion laid to rest
when none could tell

kiss these burning lips
taste the name
I long to speak –
and share with me
the breath
that was surrendered
on our way

as one I have
remembering –
and nights I couldn’t sleep
for watching to the window
lest you come
standing near the lantern
while the porch
was worn away –
forsaken now the reasons
you were gone

lie upon the floor
these bent and broken boards
that I might be the waking
while you dream
take of me
the everything you swore
you’d never find –
sit the night with words
not written down

yearning ~

as mother blood
and sister time
wing and wind and water
come as one
with knowledge of before
was felt the same
has always been
 deep within the yearning
when writing down the ways
of every thing

inheritance
of living past
still uncertain signs
as black the cry
still rings above the blue
was blessing to the stone
bring to us
your holy stories –
our path to keep
was always there below

lest we choose
again as then –
tho still without believing
familiar clothes
were given us
to wear beneath our skin

as velvet scars
to cross the grain
where tender touch remaining
and nights
when e’en the dark
was pulled away

fearing not this loving ache
when turned from trust
to sparing
the pain to know
as knowing sometimes does

the same as first
you carried
with visions of forever
the sky would fall
and weeds would steal your sound

til every bed was dried
and ears forgot to listen
leagues to march
as wars
to break in two

rewritten to the memory
are lives we couldn’t save
buried now beneath the willow tree
and given none –
the name I speak
e’er the spirits linger
in keeping me with memory
words to understand

of lifetimes past
we were before
might the ink be lifted
to reveal another word –
beneath the word

written to a place
within the soul

mother blood
remembers now –
things we dare not say
sister time
returning us
into the love
we know
