long the days
were dread to nights
and hid beneath the secrets
of times we were together
trusting fate
to intervene

as planks along
the leaning barn –
broken lights and lunas
quiet as a mist
above the pond –
trusted as the early chill
wrote upon the window –
signed our names
so sure the spring
would find us
after all

the failing bliss
of Christmas morn
to hold us down
to treasure –
as auld langsyne replayed
and played again

no more the need
to hurry –
lest our essence
be consumed –
as petals lost to weeds
along the way

would ever I be missed
to every moment I endured
or rusted by my hands
upon the plow

faded now the cowboy
that lived within my curtains
with tales
that served to prove
was here I loved

long the days
we fell into –
the wish for one more
season –
locked beneath the secrets
concealed by yesterday

another me ~

was you
and somewhere else
before another you had been
and I a blossom burst
against your heart
a melody remembered
you can’t believe you’re gone
how many winds
have willed your world apart

and faint for disbelieving
faint for words we said that day
and scribbled letters
one by one
into the dark decay

bare beneath ten thousand
ancient lights
you touched me then
I touched you back
and only this I ask
come again
when glaciers melt the silent seas
when mountains peak
to valleys
when canyons scream

will you know the me
that held you
know these fingers
once entwined
was longing born of loving
another me
another time

I’ve heard them say
when listened as they whispered
down the hall
there’s a better way
to get it back
another way to have it all

tell the story
tell the teachers
tell them all you loved me more

when you looked at life this morning
I was the smile
you wore

beyond the sunny day
in places never called by name
I’m the other one
another day
another love (you loved) the same

come back to you
come back to me
remember what I said
when the sky was blue
and ships were sailed as clouds
above our heads

I was watching you
you were watching me
was this the dream of dreaming of
how could I know
forever this
the first (the last)
enough

circles in the sand ~

from these moments
of beginning –
somewhere far
the earth defends
a place of magic
meant to hold
your heart

from the skylight
sapphire vision
of an ancient world aglow –
there’s another dream
awaking now
beyond the one we know

from the choices
of tomorrow –
came to find our future here
in a circle where
we started
yesterday –
of yesteryear

as a breath
within a moment –
held by others so divine
when came for love –
eternity
was destiny to find

in the sacred
of surrender –
we become
as once we dreamed
from a circle
barely turning
to the sands that fell
between

gathered in me ~

Was not the first
I’d come again…
reeking of woodsmoke
folded near inside my shirt…
names that should be new;
the taste of somewhere else
triggered in the calling.

Silence (clinging) feels the same
a sweet familiar love –
remembered all the reasons
why I left…
to come again
pulling at pieces
truth exposed –
another piece of cloth,
clothes that fit me (still…)
I’ve walked the house once we built –
shaded by the orchard —
Planted small,
and grew into the barn…

Now both
are gone, and I (unaware)
possess the only picture
of how it was…
the broken yard and crooked gate,
cattle nursed by a patch of
weed (and will…)
a swing of mismatched
boards…slouched below
outstretched arms
an oak —
your father planted
(your mother cursed)…

Was there
we loved…
(as no one ever had),
feather mattress
stuffed and stitched (new)
for us, and wrapped
in sacks of blue…
We spoke in hushed whispers
(secrets tumbling)
to the flicker of a flame
burnt the mantle black —
shadows melted (moments)
long ago
(but not so) far…

finished
before the start became
an end was writ…
I never understood…

in the quiet still
before I find you (first)
I breathe,
The world
that I remember…
is again…
a feather swept
(across) my soul;
words uttered to silence;

this –
memory of yet to be
and the smell
of burning pine…

musing ~

take of these
my all
my every
thing I was before
no less
than who I was
when once you wrote me
word for word
to pages pressed

echoes breathed
together
easy –
who can say
which came as first
the choice to be
as fate was drawing
lazy circles
in the dirt

back this way
as forward falling –
dare me reach
to catch the truth
what was meant
of passing whispers
sighs were secrets
poets proved

lacey lace
and midnight wonder
round the round –
and tied with string
verses vain
as morning musing
rhyme returned
but not a thing

ages past and yet
another –
one more time
beneath the fall
stillness as a siren
singing –
through the night
one spirit call

get me back
or take me never –
more and more
the same and not –
where was I
when first you found me
lifetimes since
the pen forgot

stories almost read ~

had I one more
grace to give
and not much more
worth keeping –
than roads I’ve come
to bring you love –
kneeling now in prayer

forgotten
every sorrow fell
grief beyond my season –
another dawn
is waiting me
lest I wander there

violet shades
of winter ash –
and canyons lit by longing
days to walk
and warmth we willed
to stay

as colors of the
sweetest songs –
winds the same as ever
shall free the lowly spirit
from the silence
of the grave

stir to voice
these fragile words
and give them place
to matter
save for me the mystery
of stories almost read –

stay the night
another life
that I might find your
wishes –
hanging by a prayer
beside my bed

passing through ~

more than breath
this passing through
becoming as I am –
the last I was
the first to know
of ways to understand

as grace revealed
by sweet design
no different than the one
as sacred to impression
as winds and sea –
of sun

as morning
rolls against the tide –
recalled the scent of rain
remembered me
as songs another sang
before I came

as holy as a verse
to write –
prophets sworn to find
as here alone –
when all was still
a silence so divine

as soul to soul
within without –
and closer than can be
wherever there
the name of love –
shall speak the same
of me

beyond the storm ~

come the fight
that needs no courage
now the kiss –
that begs not breath
dancers locked in loving service
fueled by dreams
of fearlessness

arm in arm
for lifetimes written
shape the blue beyond the storm
stead the pace of resurrection
alters all that faith
becomes

faultless as a word
once spoken –
drifted far upon the wind
settled in the will of waking
choice for love –
to live again

red sky nights ~

fragile as a month
of mondays
sky lit up with amber shows –
lazy as a dream returning
down these crooked
dusty roads

drop me by
the way to someplace –
wandered home this way before
told myself another story –
I won’t miss you any more

the way so weary
trees were crying –
bowed to bone beside the creek
red sky nights
of ruby ribbon
whisper strung from evergreen

wrote a note
with purple crayon –
pinned it to the lantern’s bright
begged you find me
on the pasture –
counting lives by firelight

first as I and you were
early –
caught your look of sweet surprise
paradise was missing somewhere –
dare I step into
your eyes

asked you not
of plans for leaving –
drew a map to heaven’s gate
told you more
than I could ever
take it back
one word too late

knew their names
each constellation –
sisters
brothers
venus
mars
traced them all as if I never
knew you’d go –
this close
this far

I can’t say ~

been sitting in the shadows
waiting long
the night to fade –
nursing day old coffee
with a shot of lemonade

talking talk with stars
as moonbeams
fell between the boughs
said a prayer or two
(one more amen)
for blessings given now

for warmth that wraps
my longing heart –
words that bare my soul
faith to see (beyond the dark)
another place I go

need not the signs
(or something more) to show me
what is real
leaves are turning –
light is breaking
(ask me how I feel)

deep within this stillness
something moves my joys to tear –
knowing what I know
of who I am
(and none to fear)

for all the morning
promise –
tangled wish of love and lace
for reasons I can’t tell you –
love remembers (me)
this place

the night birds shift
as prisms cast
a lowly face
to light
