afternoon flame ~

imagined you there
the last of October
measured in fractals of rich nectarine

sunlit by more
than change of expression –
some far away notion
of hands needing hands
lighter than leaves
softly were crashing
to the season (forever)
of us

(spinning)

Vikings thrust into battle
they never could see
wouldn’t know us from them
and there in the shimmering
afternoon flame
particles split from
another (we were)
destined for this
repetition

come back (we dared)
come back to us now
we did

I’m sure you’ll remember
how nothing was spared
to places we’d kept –
and melted from trees
maple and lace
slowed (just a bit)
by our passing

a lifetime there
when I closed my eyes
not surprised
to find you
(were watching)

there was a time I knew
and a time that fell before
some scattered unfamiliar
in the midst of truth
a moment when I lingered
stepped from darkness
into light –

moved my bed
much closer to the window
gave my life to something
greater than the pieces I’ve become
pieces here
at last now fit together
were just waiting this –
their purpose
to make sense

pages without numbers
ribbons without red
numbers counted backwards
each death the same
was waiting an epiphany
a solitude revival

for the tent to raise
the choir to sing me home

dreaming of today ~

would for the past
a treasure pay –
to resurrect the places
we crossed while we were dreaming
of today
when spoke a hushed apology
for fortunes we abused
and wrote again as numbers
to the stone –
sang for all another verse
before the plate was offered
as hallelujah rose
with us to stand
returning this embarassment
of what of love we held
blink and someone speaks
we hardly know –
remembered
e’er we pass as breath
into one more surrender
abyss of words
we kept the best aside –
love we never gave away
shall tie us to the river
stones within our pockets
silent sit

no more than me ~

from the story
never finished –
comes the next to read these lines
an end I wrote –
I swear I’ll now erase
pretty as I ever was
dreams for love to dream
an answer to the
question –
who am I
a drifter
fell from fairytale
wonder to be found –
daylight where the night reigned yesterday
words no one can give me
wait in silence
on my tongue –
a story started new
remembers me

the chilly grey
was threatening –
as had so many times
the earth was opened up
and I was blind
forgotten for a moment
the ground (that was my love)
pulled me into more
than just belief
fastened by a will
I could not speak of yesterday
forgetting where the bridge
had burned before
as curses slipped from darkness
to my lips (a silent red)
threatened once to bury me
leave me with no past
but stronger came
the rush to carry on
the best of times
reminds me now
the way was never easy
was on the way
I thought
to turn around
but light beyond the lantern light –
a truth distilled by faith

with hand to heart
I lean into the dark

meet me there
beyond the shadows
where the purple dogwood grows
that I might look
into the eyes
that once adored me so

meet me there
so I might be
remembered to your kiss
a hand within
your gentle hand
a bliss beyond your bliss

would I be less
for wanting more
than the memory
of your sigh
ears attuned to music
each haunting lullaby

of far away
yet near enough
as sacred truth restored
beyond the gate
where blossoms burst
in loving hues once more

returning as tomorrow
there begins eternity
another day
remains of love
when you have come
for me

across the way
just down the road
we walked so long ago
when stood beside
forever
the purple dogwood grows

marry me now
while the cookies are baking
could be we’ll elope
and the house
will burn down
they’ll find us in cardboard
cream cheese and sprinkles
a recipe made
from love long ago

and sifted so sweetly
these candies and karma
begged you to stay
I’d do you up right
warm from the oven
and held to my longing
maple and sugar
in the shape
of my heart

powdered assurance
wax paper lining
somewhere they wait
with tongues
ill prepared
for what might be offered
of essence done over
a memory of heaven –
a kitchen
glowed bright

chocolate and butter
dropped by the spoonful
tied with a string
as love to bestow
stolen the taste
was a kiss unintended
counters uncluttered
with ribbon and dough

marry me now
while the cookies are baking
could be
we’ll elope
and the house
will burn down

last I knew
the path grown over –
trees I loved were bending low
vine and cup with
secrets whispered –
of where we passed here
once ago

hands the same
though smaller somehow
tortured bark as web to ring –
learned of these
the lowly falling
more than colors died
for spring

come the passion now
for harvest
spare these ears
your lonesome knell
fill me up with sunlight
scattered –
ground to love
my feet so well

passed as years
through vein and valley –
crossed to crest
before the snow
hung a shade
of scarlet ribbon –
lifted there the skies
below

lark and lily –
worse for wearing
patient teachers (tears to dry)
eyes beseech
the naked branches
faith remains –
to wonder why

(I’ll find a way)

It seems –
I have a notion
of what we need to do –
let’s run away
(I’ll find a way)
to make your dreams
come true.
I’ll draw a map
if you bring a light –
might be a place too far.
We’ll sleep in tents
of jasmine –
blankets pulled of stars.

Lay your head
against this longing –
let my thunder be your song.
(Ancient drum)
is this heart beating –
listen now
(it is your own).

Take my hands
and still my wanting –
soothe this wandering within.
Tell me now the stories
coming back
(as one) as we begin –
to understand (I’ve waited here)
to know you
(as I do).

Where I am warmed
against your love –
and love our (only) truth.

winds to carry me ~

the rain falls gentle now
though still the thunder threatens
and blackest night
is framed in light somehow

remembering a moment passed
when all the world was still
birds were gathered silent
on the line –

their quiet so consuming
there was something surely come
when first a breeze
ran coursing through
the pines –

as heads were turned
and hearts were stopped –
the sky
a swirling flame
my hair was blowing (arrows)
til I was almost blind

but in that space
of nothingness –
uncertainty of signs
a voice was heard so clear
and I was saved
another time –

for another day –
another moment’s grace
when the winds will come
to steal my breath
away
