sometimes
I’m remembered
to places once I fell
and arms that reached around me
in the dark

whispers of forgiveness
settle me tonight
clover grows
in meadows never seen

leaving
never meant to last
still I’ve kept the best –
verses (twenty more
and there your name)

passages decided
by the turning of a page
chapters never written
even now the stars
defend

to know the way
we came before –
would hold forever safe
softened by the telling
and tempted not
by fate

last
the dates seemed far away
but stars –
they huddled near
shuffled with the wing’eds
early clay

of weeping then
I know you heard
my crying on the wind –
begged you come
another
yesterday

worried not
for leaving
or what tomorrow knew
of places still
unwritten – leaving
left undue

will poets tell
of all we felt –
of mercies spilled to rhyme
gathered first as angels
to the pen

memorizing
times before –
were sworn to keep us still
falling into reasons
for missing time
again

do you recall
my name
ash and honeysuckle
maple
cedar
rain –
stayed with you
lay with you
how it was you knew
the same I was
as yesterday
you knew

the ache of
where we’re going
as pulled into the night
spilling over canyons
with our light
flush against
your wonders –
swollen heart to please
carved by your initials
my release

into the song
almost unsung –
birds of chatter cling
above the boughs
where once
we loved –
do you recall
my name

serenades
are wasted here
already I’ve forgotten
only this –
the ways of you again
roads of almost flooded
nights to lives between
tell me now of where
we new begin

match my beat
as one to one
other rhymes remembered
soul to soul
as one more time
to rise
cradled by the universe
safe within your storm
venus – my reflection
in your eyes

against your winds
rock me there
eternal with your dance
westward as the sunset
empties day
burning hot
above the places
we’ve returned to love
give me back the breath
you took away

for every fall
a picking up –
a matter of perspective
someone crushed
an apple tree to seed
long I stood
just looking up
hanging then to heaven
o’er I would want
whatever fell to need

would prayers be heard
I know that now
no matter why the sinner
would fall to knees
with plead for lowly grace
chained the past
was one more grief
of burden to deliver
would nightbirds come –
to leave without a trace

to sigh aloud
the first amen –
is whispered without memory
of why the choice
or where our purpose came
now to lay (me down)
just so –
years from where I started
sorrow just as heavy
wears a different
name

with want to speak
of treasures
when gathered there

who will know
who will say –
what proof we leave behind
are part of all we’ve
come to know

to find

the rainbow knows
the calling of the wind
and where he hides

forgotten now
the winter swell –
sweaters old and frayed
longer was the crying

the nightingale

reminded me
of ancient nights –
was there
I touched the sun
– fell into the ocean
of your eyes

cast about
my lowly craft
sail me home again –

made softer

the same dark eyes
where laughter sits
how many moons (forgave)
to wonder where
the time has gone –
with every secret saved

a dream or more
forgotten (you
were taking them somewhere)
I wake to worlds
unknown to word –
with whispers in my hair

as petals scattered
o’er the bed –
gypsy moths conceive
(windows needing washing)
– a love to let
believe

destiny
of broken cups –
just (one more) passing through
mysteries return me (still)
as feeling –
(once you knew)

the summer dreams
of nights in softest flannel
whispers folded secrets
warmed below

lazy morning shadows
said – I will again
take of these
my everything
of all I have to bloom

breathless
wakes the golden –
pressing down the dawn
clinging to a blossom
with memory
of snow
