pardon this
the ill affair
of marigold to mayfly
trumpets folded softly
to the burning of the day

stay the night
that I might tell
of others long since missing
praises once we sang
now silently oppressed

touch – o please I beg you
touch me with your waking
spin for me a web
of words I never heard

have I no more
to give you
wisdom not to worry
dare we speak of living
as a cup of something less

and sit with jam
as curses fell
denouncing all that was
pretending not
the best we couldn’t see

blue the fingers
morning paper
folded on your knee
anxious eyes to reach
beyond the door

as one unto another
beg me stay
to turn the page
gather now the reasons
for the letting go this way

as flesh to fire
as words to wing –
dam the bloody river
and tell them all
I watched for you always

years before the locust swarm
nights betrayed the fourth
taking back my innocence
holding back the storm

slept before the news was come
of dying on the pasture
wore your name in two
against my skin

now the day is trading
all I meant to tell you then
of centipedes and winters
not as long

of blooms along the eastern ridge
deep the weeds to marry
babies pushed from branches
paint the lonely night

stay if for a moment
heed the waning of your soul
shifted as the moon became
a story I shall tell

unfinished ~

fireflies at twilight
hands on the bible
a smile passed for trust
in between
no need to spend time
on the past unimportant
as the color of paper
neath words left unsaid

thirty years gone
since the season for leaving
fifteen more
than my mother was then
but the eyes of the soul
keep pictures much longer
a tear brushed away
not in time

and truth sealed tight
how many I’ve wondered
poison the sound of my name
falls to the reason
for waiting much longer
than the need to be known
by the curve of her arms

a baby once more
the future unfinished –
grace for another
of gifts passed between

Author’s Note: The relationship of mother to daughter is a cloth
weaved of many threads – love, faith, sorrow and forgiveness.
Because we are the same, we think we know things the same. The
reality is that we are as different as woman to man, wasp to
a firefly, a kiss to a curse.

for wanting more
than just these days –
as passion nights since passed
distant stars forbidden now
their flame –

but once before I rocked beneath
the promises they whispered
wishes they remembered
ten thousand lives before
when another I was fated
to the place beneath their mercy
and heard the stories told
before they came

knew for me
the same as they
would last beyond my journey –
would see me come
and known by other names

no different
the dark eyed girl
who played beneath their graces
named them each by someone
that she loved

held them safe
against her heart –
my favored understanding
and swore anew to keep them
past the end
whenever then the time might come
as love – again returning
to find the ways to love
would love again

the lines between
the darkest nights
when only two could twinkle –
shone beyond the canopies
into the place I lay

dreaming dreams
I shouldn’t know –
of other rivers crossing
seven silver sisters
and mysteries to spare

back the way remembered
how could I know them (sweetly)
by names I gave them leaving
to remind of me
of their love

family ~

Almost three years ago, I decided it was warm enough to cook outside on the grill. When I opened the lid, however, I found that birds had started a nest beneath the lower grate.

No problem. I got my gloves from the garage and carefully removed the top grate and then the nest, relocating it to the lower branches of a nearby Evergreen.

Two days later, I went to use the grill again and discovered that the eager couple had been at it again, although they hadn’t gotten very far in two days. I was able to just clean what bit of straw and paper they had out without much trouble. That was Wednesday.

The following Sunday, I tried again and surprised the happy couple in the midst of putting the finishing touches on their nest. They froze in mid-activity when I opened the lid. I quickly shut it, and stood for several moments with my hand on top – listening for signs of distress.

That was three years ago. I haven’t used the grill since, and instead, each Spring I sit in my kitchen and watch the growing family of wrens making multiple trips to and from the fields, the trees, and the yard. They have quite successfully traded in their simple nest for a two story townhouse with loft.

When I am lounging on the patio in the summer, they are continuously in and out, and I occasionally catch them peeking out from one of the side air holes. While lying in the sun, there always a wonderful chatter coming from inside the grill. I convince myself that I am the topic of many a discussion – “she’s the one.”

Last Sunday after a stressful morning, I carried lemonade to the back patio and watched as the parents made trip after trip to the yard, the trees, the field (anywhere there were treats to be found) – listening to the eager chatter each time they returned, to go again. In no time at all, I’d forgotten the reason for my distress.

I love them and hardly miss the grill at all!

who are you
with feathers proud
come spread your home
to mine
as brothers
sisters
all the same –
within this one

sweeter here
the morning air
tis come as truth
the breath of God
how is it I can tarry long
without a place to be

and see it all (made clearer)
light dispersed by breath
broadened blades of love
weaved of silver leaf
vines support a brother
til limbs grow strong again

seasons tumble (softer now)
to capets red and golden
standing ancient swords
are naked (do not care)

love is home to everything that matters
from sycamore to cherry ~
hyacinth to crow
ten thousand trees
and all with light their own

held the truth
years before my coming
swore an oath to fathers
would keep this place for me

how long it’s been
I spoke their names
the shape of clothes they carry
sweet gum ~ oak and cedar
forever proud they stand

against the push
that is the world
more and take
and bury
even now the mountain grieves
for one they cannot save

yesterday grows lonely
in shades of nevergreen
a shadow cast by giving up
another falls behind ~
timbers mourn in silence
the shape of winter dreams

Author’s Note: As friends of the Smoky Mountains know,
an imported old-world insect, the Balsam Wooly Adelgid has decimated
Frazier fir trees throughout Eastern North America. From the highest peaks
you can now look out over millions of ugly skeletons of dead trees.

a weathered brow
a broken fence
and paths I know by heart
steps above the water
glisten wet beneath the moon
voices rise in echoes
long forsaken

names reduced to memory
rust beyond the barn

shadows fill the spaces
once reserved for briar
was somewhere here
I noticed you were gone
in ways the geese were flying
winter blades to bow
darker stained the ribbons
to the wood

signs of you in everything
signs of life moved on

empty halls
of paper peeling
still the heart remembers
the sound of aching boards
beneath the dance

twilight spilled
through splintered glass
tied my mother’s apron
hand in hand
two steps away and back

the scent of rain
before a storm
lightning stilled the darkness
a moment clear
and all I saw was you

mysteries
as I’ve forgotten
other names and places past
miles have separated me
from love

I wish I knew
the path you took
which way to watch for mercies
lest you come again
remembered me
as home

left to leaving
sunrise waited
just beyond the morning glare
all twas slept –
an empty vessel
nothing more than pages there

to change the rest
but somewhere dawning
burns so bright
the eyes are one
with souls entwined in everafter
love beyond the dream
become

sworn an end
to mortal battles
lest I press beyond the night
denied this place of empty longing
let me go –
the way of light

truth be damned
for what is offered –
holds no lure for those who know
distant worlds
and loving moments
keep alive each willing soul

as water streamed
from mountains hidden
deep within the breast of earth
fountains gush
with each ascension –
pains erased by sacred birth

a baby cries
a forest ruptures
bells to ring though few can hear
loving songs within the whispers
winds to bring the broken
cheer

a step beyond
the edge of dreaming –
how many times I’ve wished to stay
in houses I’d forgotten somehow
love I held another day

keeps me now –
each night much longer
than I had planned to leave this shell
dreams no longer keep me
dreaming –
night defined by sleeping well

seek not the change
or when the moment
came that I was gone –
but know of worlds that have
no boundary –
destinies of one to own

watch for surely
once or never –
might I wake before the noon
telling tales
of golden tassels –
winter wheat and jealous moons

mountains rise
but not so far
they leave behind the laurel
blue against her bosom
sunlight in her hair
eastward turns a shadow
on the valley of her tears
where I am found

whose name of love
I wear

were seasons past
eternal remembrance –
no sky filled with smoke could erase
the magic of moments
from far far away –
and the coming back home
to embrace

another noonday
of rain to my soul
ashes or leaves –
I’m not sure
but of those were the same
your hand wrapping mine
and a promise
where nothing was heard

but the slow steady drum
of forever receding –
matchless to fate (restless stars)
stings as the echo
of where you were falling
tears (don’t they see
I can’t go)

living comes still by the same
crooked fence
and a stand of pink dogwood
in spring

what did you say
I wonder so often –
even now I go back (in dreams)
to lie just this close
as I can to the parting –
might I linger too long
with a ghost

wanting (for something)
one more everafter –
pieces and places (you know) –
as the drum ceased its beating
and guns met with thunder –

the arms
that forgave me
let go

from simple words
another fell – and silence
rose to meet –
ink was spilled
unselfish to the page
as joy returned to season
without ending to erase
bliss was ours
with tears to wash away
the best of these –
a story told
revealed in us a time
of where we were
when then some other day
we fell beyond the margins
creating other lives –
remember this – the choice we made
to leave our strength behind
chapters still unfolding
long after we have gone
will fill the book of silent verse
of lovers by decree –
between these sheets
of linen –
we love eternally
