blues

sometimes
and then you notice
the first of april stir –
reminders of another
once we were
as close this one
as far
too wide –
the ways between
unpracticed
as another petal drifted
another seed
to sow

when whispers fell
(I love you)
I wondered
did you hear –
above the silent roar
of cricket’s cry
were needles busy stitching
pieces never left
– made for us
a blanket
of the snow

questions spin
the early night –
where reason
falls apart
memories are faded
into light
lilacs brush the shutters
breezes blow us back
love remains
within the sounds –
carried by the soul

. . .

stirring (still) ~

someday

beyond the blue remiss
of shadows
beyond the crow –
a burning red
asphalt ribbons
split and sprawling
warn the soul
of hurts ahead

last night’s curse
the morning lover
left with not a thought
to ease
promise made
of everafter –
want for life
but one to please

parchment petals
lacey fingers
brush aside the anxious veil
gracious grieving –
mixed emotion
lies we taste –
but never tell

flush to fear
against the strangeness
bitter sweat
of let’s pretend
hands to reach
and there forever –
longing falls to love
again

of old regrets
the tired tell –
and spin their stories over
whittled now the cedar
to the bone
liars lean
into the night –
seeking home in shadows
dreamers dream
and crush their way
to dawn

of sorrows here
the past is torn –
a breath before the breaking
assurance of the places
we begin
as first the whisper falters –
an echo shall become
crossed as stars
the night –
to burn again

Today, a break from poetry to tell a story – a reminder
of the ways we belong to one another.

Yesterday afternoon, I was pulling into the parking lot
at a shopping center, when I caught a flash of movement
at the back end of a Goodwill Trailer (you know the kind – a drop off).
I steered in that direction and as I got closer, noticed
the movement was a small rabbit. I’m not sure what he
was doing in that particular (un-nature) place, but he was
definitely a kid. He froze when I stopped the car and for moments,
we watched each other.

When another car entered the lot, he took off – a bullet
across the blacktop.   I wasn’t sure where he would go.
I mean, he was in the middle of town,  and somewhere between a
gas station and a burger joint. I saw him stop when he reached a
patch of grass and I assumed he was nearing home
(or home as he knew it).

I drove probably another 100 feet before stopping to get out
of the car. I glanced back in his direction and saw two large black
crows were chasing something.   I don’t know that it was him, and
suspect it wasn’t since whatever they were chasing seemed smaller
(or at least smaller now that I’ve had time to reflect)….

– but the thought of him being caught was unbearable. I popped
my trunk, dropped in my purse and grabbed the tire iron, before taking
off across the parking lot. It’s been years since I ran so hard
and screamed so loud.

The birds seemed to have cornered whatever
they were chasing, but just as I let out my last scream (yep……..with
all I could muster, ‘nevermore’), the thing they were
pursuing darted between them and under a dumpster. That seemed
to be a sign for them and they took off (or took off to the roof,
where I assumed they would watch and wait for the
re-emergence of their prey).

I cursed them a bit before walking back to my car. I was proud of myself,
but on the other hand, I pondered. First, it must be tough being God and
keeping an eye on everything all the time. Second, I’m not God; as He
would have allowed nature to take care of itself (which is exactly
what was happening even as I came charging with the tire iron).
And yet, (third) I was there, and if there’s One who knows me, it is
God, and He knew I could never turn away from that bunny (good thing I
didn’t have a slingshot in my trunk).

Not sure of the bunny’s name, but I now call him Will (Goodwill)…..
and I am confident that the next time we see each other, it will be a
joyous occassion.

Always, we belong to each other.
Let us never (even for a moment) forget.

Love….

of all I am
you are a part
a fisher in the grain
a ribbon tied –
of spring brocade
of light within the stain

of you
I know –
though none would say
the ways we came to be
knowing not
the day or time –
you’re path would cross
to me

surelythis

of places
just this far away –
as the northern edge
of an eastern night
where kentucky knew
of our verse
somehow –
did you know me then
as you know me
now

as a secret path
out beyond the night –
and a long way
back
where there never was
but a soul to free and a will to learn
what would come
undone –
in the turning

an empty field
brushes gold somewhere
as the leaning back
comes to moving on –
will our truth
be known –
to places here
will our names be hard
to remember

of another time
as our journey was –
with a sleeve of maps
folding back
in time
– a needle strong
knew the songs we’d trade
– were the stars
burned out
 by a wish we made

. . .

be still ~

be still
thy breath of ancient wisdom
– keep your secrets holy
as warmed these
sacred regions
of my skin

be still
thy sun –
beyond the reaching
a psalm restored
from words unsaid –
of holding on
when nothing mattered
– as letters
from the past
reread

be young
be lost –
be somewhere other
than places
we were sworn to grieve
deep the pangs of everafter –
consumed to lust
will senses
leave

be known
thy truth –
be all I wanted
far more than wealth –
a moment here
as scar to scar –
were will to scatter
as briar to breath
one kiss
endeared

. . .

by my way

in the brittle brown
awareness
color of my eyes –
carved within the canyon
of discord
swelled against my longing
a distant sweet
resound –
of times before
where leaving I
remained

swirled in cloths
of mystery –
fell to fields of clover
spent the night
in rivers
of the stars

who am I
to ponder this –
who I am
to lessen –
the treasures come
as life revealed
almost over now

bathed in pools
of lunar spring –
as jealous
nights made watch
polished slick the stones
that wore my path

familiar as the longing
was coming round
to be –
as one
will be remembered
for the coming back
to me

tender now
the almost touch
of hands restored to heart
fluttering beneath
a sacred wing

. . .

because ~

Because sometimes, we need reminders that the things that matter most aren’t the things that take up the most room.

May your day be blessed with moments of bliss, and may hearts that hold you wait patiently while you play.

Bobbie

redriver cemetary road

remember me
to pebbles –
curs’ed love undone –
as truth became a rub
against your soul

the weary plight
of mortal stone –
was broken by the fall
reflecting now
on places –
we’ve forgotten
to recall

to those who wait
and those who keep –
a fire burning hot
are crouched
within the darkness
dreaming now –
of dreaming
not

the coming back
so foolish –
what was meant
of what we said
how many lifetimes
waiting
for someone
to make the bed –

someone
to make the coffee
a love to darn the sheets
how many tears
with no one there
to see

the hurt is buried deeper
than we ever
thought we’d know –
a road runs hard
beside us –
takes of joy
an angry toll

the way of weeds –
of crooked briar
a canopy of braid
is stretched above the path
we meant to take

endearing us
for always
beneath the weight
of life –
standing still
where winter pebbles
graze

. . .

pause ~

power

black ballerinas
of feathered acclaim –
swim as ten thousand
prayers
come to light
songs of surrender –
psalms of just now
I knew
as you knew
where the night
would fall down

to swirl
as a memory
almost forgot –
when held for too long
in the gentle
somehow
scratched into cedar
carved into word –
laced by the leaving
to turn
one more time

the dawn into
slowing –
a pausing of truths
swept as a shutter –
of black angel wings
– one in their beating
eternities here
are folded the sky
– as a rush
into flight
