stillIam

sweet the flush
of destinies
whene’er the world grows calm
as there beneath
each tender tree –
eternities are known
tho burdened not
by stories left –
forsaken by the truth

would still the heart
from beating –
here alone

frail the myth
of magical –
sacred paths revealed
with worry not for sorrows
washed away –
breezes blow
across into
the proof of love’s refrain
faith has come
another dream
to save

. . .

to wonder ~

yellow

how am I to wonder
and still
the morning comes
fresh as tears
to grace the baby green
petals begged to open
sleepy eyes awake
eager now to hear
the story told

of distant fields
and gardens fair –
winded wills and worry –
forests drawn in aprons
of a song
played within the stillness
of one more time
I’ve gone
far beyond the touch
that is the dawn

how is now
I’ve traveled
beyond the reach of dreams –
beyond the safe abode
of tethered night
walked with stars
and tripped my way
into another light –
brushed aside the veil
to free my soul

. . .

closer

more than once
forever came –
as close as night
to pasture
reflecting life
as shadows to the pond

I lie awake
and listen –
as somewhere now
beginning –
eternity is rolled
upon her side
she listens as I whisper
songs she thought
forgotten

dream me home –
one more night
of psalm

. . .

carry me ~

beyond this night
of china plates
of fragile whispered dreams
teams of unseen verses
dot the sky

take me there
the morning
carried higher still
the lowest branch
where evergreen made home

burst my heart
with longing
gratitude for just –
tis all I know
of living
but to love

lock the gate
and clip the wick
tell them I was lost
found my way
rewritten –
a golden sycamore
– resurrected map
while I was sweeping
up the yard

made my way
found my way
somewhere still they listen
somewhere yet
– a violin at dusk

feed my cause
bleed these hands
mark my days to mayfly
but gather not
to sheets
of almost done

brush against
the aching –
where scattered now to names
– gentle souls
tethered by my own

carry me
the winter
to the hiding place of love
pick the tiny flowers
tie their hands
gentle as a breeze to bring
essence to a song –
baskets left for filling
on the porch

shatter me
the eastern ridge
wash for me an ocean
ten thousand silver fins –
a carousel
build for me
a nothing more
than places I have loved
but leave me not
to wish upon
a star already sailed

coming back
I swore one time
to find another way
but still I dream
beyond my dreams
recalled

. . .

Author’s Note: Sometimes words refuse to let me sleep.
I stir against the

redriver cemetary road

remember me
to pebbles –
curs’ed love undone –
as truth became a rub
against your soul

the weary plight
of mortal stone –
was broken by the fall
reflecting now
on places –
we’ve forgotten
to recall

to those who wait
and those who keep –
a fire burning hot
are crouched
within the darkness
dreaming now –
of dreaming
not

the coming back
so foolish –
what was meant
of what we said
how many lifetimes
waiting
for someone
to make the bed –

someone
to make the coffee
a love to darn the sheets
how many tears
with no one there
to see

the hurt is buried deeper
than we ever
thought we’d know –
a road runs hard
beside us –
takes of joy
an angry toll

the way of weeds –
of crooked briar
a canopy of braid
is stretched above the path
we meant to take

endearing us
for always
beneath the weight
of life –
standing still
where winter pebbles
graze

power

black ballerinas
of feathered acclaim –
swim as ten thousand
prayers
come to light
songs of surrender –
psalms of just now
I knew
as you knew
where the night
would fall down

to swirl
as a memory
almost forgot –
when held for too long
in the gentle
somehow
scratched into cedar
carved into word –
laced by the leaving
to turn
one more time

the dawn into
slowing –
a pausing of truths
swept as a shutter –
of black angel wings
– one in their beating
eternities here
are folded the sky
– as a rush
into flight

. . .

briefly

had I known
of another –
of times before this
where life was
revealed in shadows
of bliss
and spread into sorrows
one tear could divide
– as oceans were split
our fate to decide

what of this
we were keeping –
what of joy
shall we pay –
shall sleep in the moss
o’er the places
we lay

what blossom
is seeded –
by the ache of despair
shall burst
as a garden –
to fields unaware
of moments we came
or the ways
we once found –
how long was the journey
I wonder

sunrise
the same as it was
just before –
when last I lay down
this journey
to prove –

remembering now
to another
sometime –
as the road I was taken
returns me
anew

laureline
come the path
forgotten me –
as rivers carry stones
with memory of an ancient
water’s rise
in streams beneath
above the past
sentiment of standing
still as death
before the autumn lies

crush to sands
this still old self –
lost from all that was
wherever now the willow
does confess
with rings beneath
and tales untold –
breezes to recall
moments pressed into
her wilderness

never change

what beauty
restrained
in that which you give
for others – the debt seldom paid
so easy the burden
made lesser somehow
for smiles left in passing –
our sorrows
to trade

what story exists
in promise divine –
is come in the balm of a friend
pressed as a salve
to the breaking apart
of all we have lost –
we gather
again

what honor
is held
in lockets so fair –
would blush even now
at her praise
let us bend to this silence
with thanks on our lips
for our blessing
in knowing –
this keeper of grace

as joys
we have garnered
what name do they say
a chair –
at the table they save
let them be patient
o let them not mourn
for moments forgotten –
in living forgave

what graces
without
the kingdom must be
when given us glimpse
of your light
what selfless compassion
were angels to kneel –
when round us they gather
as souls into flight

nightskirt

dreams the night divided
lives before
and since
fields are growing over
the memory of seed –
swallowed by the music
swaying side by side
red becoming
something more than hay

heaven flies
on outstretched wing
ten feet above the ground –
soars ten thousand miles
before the night
remembered these –
the way to home
sometimes the darkness bleeds
as longing floats
to clouds
above the sound

swirling silk
of old release –
a crooked line embracing
the mystery of life
so few can see –
monarchs flush the ancient pine
how nimble
– crouched the stillness
memorized returning
to all the nights
between
