was there time before
you made of this a choice
and passed beneath the window
without a name

did you tarry
on the orchard
waiting way too long (again)
for something more to come
(it never came)

remembering another life
and words
you might have said
seems now the door is locked
the path grown o’er
and nothing you can do or say
will change the past
to be

can’t take it back
to starting –
can’t bring it back to me

when passed we have
into the place of tortured recollection
memories to haunt us
(fate we keep)
truth was more than honest –
than we could ever be
a weight too much
we carry to our sleep

take again
one labored breath
and let the rest be passed
gather now the moments
you hold dear
love remains
and nothing else
(nothing else can matter)
say it now
tho no one waits
to hear

Author’s Note – Inspired by a heart-wrenching entry
in a dear friend’s notebook of truth –
‘he is dead now’ from Scattered leaves with poetic imprints

before I knew
I knew of you
and what somebody said
before I slept ~
each sweet amen
was whispered by my bed

my soul to keep
my faith (to know)
my ways (forever) blest
home ~
a place I carry
life as love confessed

tangled up in something
without the fear of flight ~
but found my way
across the deep
and fell into your light

(amazing place)
such loving arms
carved by truth o’er time
music there ~
I know the words
(and every note divine)

tis not the same
nor measured here
how can I (truth) explain
of what I know
or where I’ve been
(that girl must be insane)

as love to life
some days I rise
within the sun’s embrace
remembered now
the path to you ~
(has run through me) always

silent hallelujahs ~

sleep no more
the night away
without the dream awaking
so certain you were there
outside my gate

as once (did I imagine)
I heard my name aloud
stronger every one
for moments passed

eternities within my reach
as midnight dreads the crowing
hours – but a place
to lay my head

while thoughts so often gather
by minutes unprepared
for where I go
whene’er the lights go dim

will somewhere else
my name be held
in silent hallelujahs
no whisper of regret
could speak the same

(hello) above the sigh
of wing’eds in the rafters
or stir as planets pace
familiar skies

what lowly indiscretion
has nightbirds answering
as curs’ed sheets pretend
to love me still

sleep no more
for in the want that wakes me
from my leaving –
windows open wide
to find you come

breath of God ~

sweeter here
the morning air
tis come as truth
the breath of God
how is it I can tarry long
without a place to be

and see it all (made clearer)
light dispersed by breath
broadened blades of love
weaved of silver leaf
vines support a brother
til limbs grow strong again

seasons tumble (softer now)
to capets red and golden
standing ancient swords
are naked (do not care)

love is home to everything that matters
from sycamore to cherry ~
hyacinth to crow
ten thousand trees
and all with light their own

held the truth
years before my coming
swore an oath to fathers
would keep this place for me

how long it’s been
I spoke their names
the shape of clothes they carry
sweet gum ~ oak and cedar
forever proud they stand

against the push
that is the world
more and take
and bury
even now the mountain grieves
for one they cannot save

yesterday grows lonely
in shades of nevergreen
a shadow cast by giving up
another falls behind ~
timbers mourn in silence
the shape of winter dreams

Author’s Note: As friends of the Smoky Mountains know,
an imported old-world insect, the Balsam Wooly Adelgid has decimated
Frazier fir trees throughout Eastern North America. From the highest peaks
you can now look out over millions of ugly skeletons of dead trees.

by heart ~

a weathered brow
a broken fence
and paths I know by heart
steps above the water
glisten wet beneath the moon
voices rise in echoes
long forsaken

names reduced to memory
rust beyond the barn

shadows fill the spaces
once reserved for briar
was somewhere here
I noticed you were gone
in ways the geese were flying
winter blades to bow
darker stained the ribbons
to the wood

signs of you in everything
signs of life moved on

empty halls
of paper peeling
still the heart remembers
the sound of aching boards
beneath the dance

twilight spilled
through splintered glass
tied my mother’s apron
hand in hand
two steps away and back

the scent of rain
before a storm
lightning stilled the darkness
a moment clear
and all I saw was you

mysteries
as I’ve forgotten
other names and places past
miles have separated me
from love

I wish I knew
the path you took
which way to watch for mercies
lest you come again
remembered me
as home

seasons still to be ~

one more time
as living goes –
and I’ll be done with dying
come before in satin gowns
feathers are my fare
barefoot on an eastern lake
wilderness and wilder
stars against my shoulder
fell into the weave
and couldn’t go
(the way of mars)
across and back
wandering much further
than the earth was flat
(the promise come)
sail away with me
fingers splayed on lacey lace
playthings for the baby
fit with one (remember me)
lightening coursed within
touching breath
melting fire
burned into a moment
a scar to last forever
and seasons still to be
of all that was
no ‘could have been’
will matter much tomorrow
as brith returns another
without the father’s name
or where we passed
with why we left
though some my heart
is keeping
in boxes lined with cedar
and buried three moons deep
hyacinth and hemlock
weaved into my tresses
evidence of times before
beneath these same
bright stars

bittersweet ~

I am memory
bittersweet my salvation
nothing matters more

you will choose for me
a moment of wonderous
o’er a lifetime less

silken dew on green
petals opened and waiting
the essence of life

pitch black the midnight
stars fade in comparison
uncertain return

the dying despair
curse my fragile existence
regret for my touch

were reason to be
to return without knowing
where I shall linger

what seasons to pass
but a glimmer of flame burned
for love remembered

immortality
I am the taste of summer
drying on parched lips

I’ve come of age
a little bit late –
way past the point
I reached my prime…
My eyes now open
(sometimes I blink)
to what has been
and was never mine.

I’ve hit my knees
and stood up strong –
sometimes I thought
I never would.
I’ve seen the best
and worst of me
more faith than some –
more right than good.

Surrender has no
business here –
for falling back
on sleepless nights.
I’ve written days
in blood and truth –
and traded ink
by candlelight.

Do we ever lose
in letting go…
for only then
is our purpose met.
When comes the time
of difference –
in what we wished
and what we let.

beyond the dream ~

left to leaving
sunrise waited
just beyond the morning glare
all twas slept –
an empty vessel
nothing more than pages there

to change the rest
but somewhere dawning
burns so bright
the eyes are one
with souls entwined in everafter
love beyond the dream
become

sworn an end
to mortal battles
lest I press beyond the night
denied this place of empty longing
let me go –
the way of light

truth be damned
for what is offered –
holds no lure for those who know
distant worlds
and loving moments
keep alive each willing soul

as water streamed
from mountains hidden
deep within the breast of earth
fountains gush
with each ascension –
pains erased by sacred birth

a baby cries
a forest ruptures
bells to ring though few can hear
loving songs within the whispers
winds to bring the broken
cheer

a step beyond
the edge of dreaming –
how many times I’ve wished to stay
in houses I’d forgotten somehow
love I held another day

keeps me now –
each night much longer
than I had planned to leave this shell
dreams no longer keep me
dreaming –
night defined by sleeping well

seek not the change
or when the moment
came that I was gone –
but know of worlds that have
no boundary –
destinies of one to own

watch for surely
once or never –
might I wake before the noon
telling tales
of golden tassels –
winter wheat and jealous moons

mountains rise
but not so far
they leave behind the laurel
blue against her bosom
sunlight in her hair
eastward turns a shadow
on the valley of her tears
where I am found
renewed to those
whose name of love
I wear
