answers I’ve forgotten ~

Whenever this –
a time for asking
the wonder comes again
as dreams are cast
in seeking truth
I know –

for what was meant
returning now
the reason I must stay
to clear the path
I walked along
as me –
another day

beside
this last tomorrow
forgiveness almost won
no more than life
a choice to love again –
for answers
I’ve forgotten –
questions mark my way
a glance behind
for where I passed
I know –
but I can’t say

serenade resigned ~

fret not
as shadows linger
would move my soul
to mourn –
surrendered love in vain
to ease the ache

returned to me
as wanderlust
I shall not ask for more
would scorn
the poet’s hand
for one more line

or bleed
the violet evening shade
of memories unsettled
to soothe the day
before the moon is come

for this refrain
my longing has no place
but in my telling
of moments
where there are no words
but those of faraway

take to heed
these tender hands
this temporary madness
decided by a change in heart –
serenade resigned

breath to still
this wonder –
hurt without a balm
tears can yet remind me
of my love

beyond this night
another waits
and there
for dreaming made
a bed of feather flowers
asleep on wandering

would angels ring
so sweet the bell
to lure me
from my solace
or count for one
the final call to home

tethered
by this evermore
and weighted with confession
as one who loved
with everything –

before the shadows fell

I am ~

it sits with me
most nights til dawn
awake before the worry
stills my eager drum
lest I would go
empty to the breaking
lost myself within
visions come without a word
to say

in keeping for the moment
let the ego sleep –
carved to truth
against the sunlit page
curls and tiny crosses –
names rewritten twice
– speak
o please don’t tell me
how it goes

as I am one
of mysteries –
dark – these eyes of soul
chalice where tomorrow’s trust
is stored
verse and line to enter in –
psalms to raise the sun
flowers without fail
another bud

alone in this –
a silent bliss
quiet filled with love –
tho somewhere in the distance
I can hear
laughter ringing (echoes)
children skipping stones

– so faraway
yet here I am
to touch

around me folded ~

once before
I can’t remember
how I passed or where I woke
dreamed of somewhere
warm and tender –
night was passed
as breath to smoke
as gentle arms
around me folded –
whispers fell as morning dew
lost in loving (ever)afters –
noontide glows
with thoughts of you

hands to my heart ~

gather the crops
and lead me to pasture –
long woolen coats
and hats on the nail
sing me our song
to remind me of breathing
take me to meeting
where the creek
dries to bone

walk with me now
through the pain of becoming
what I feared most
when we parted that day –
a longing to fill
and woods without conscience –
carved our initials
much deeper
than ache

some faraway
somewhere –
the geese are returning
spread ‘cross the dark
til we can’t see the night
and fashioned their moon
from something
less shining –
was a moment we held
to forever this way

scatter my bones
as proof of submission –
but tell not the others
I was destined to fall –
read every word
aloud at my passing –
warm
let your hands
to my heart fold around

to hold this – the last
of my fragile intentions –
will you worry
for places I’m not
when darkness remembers
the breath of surrender –
long woolen coats
and geese on the lam

star gazing ~

often at night
I stand in the drive
and look at the world anew –
watch as the life
of a star
flickers out
reflecting on moments
with you

the sound of your voice
alive on the wire
the joy that rests in your smile
echoes of moments
shared with a friend –
allow me to breathe
for a while

returning myself
to the places I keep
light from the night burns within
touches my life
with cool winter truth –
waiting to know you
again

gonna leave this place
in pieces –
like some other dream
(I dreamed)
gonna turn around –
tho who will notice me
gonna shake it off
(and not look back)
on where I was that day
gonna drive all night
to nowhere (I can say) –
til the road turns dirt
and empties (every care) onto the breeze
gonna change my name
and pen another verse
gonna leave a sign –
that only you
can see

crazy to believe ~

From here to there
it’s not so far – highways
lined with crosses.
Bridges closed (as waters rose)
and took our pay in loss.
I know you cry –
I share your tears –
Some nights I dare not sleep
for fear I’d drown –
(they lay me down)
with promises to keep.

There are places still
(remember me)
a flash of brilliant flame.
A breath beyond the twilight –
I hold you now (the same).

You speak
and I still listen –
even now my body grieves –
Forgotten all I swore to lose
(so crazy to believe).
Just stay a while –
don’t worry
for the wind or where it blows –
Tell me why you’ve come again
(for reasons I should know).

Your secret’s safe –
there’s no one here
but me (if that’s alright) –
The southern suns are sworn
to shine – much brighter
through the night.

for what (she didn’t know) ~

the diary
knows not of her dreams
or where the future lingers
more than once she’s wondered –
was she meant to live this long

for pages bent to tales behind
they seem the same in telling
another place ~ remit to grace
as midnight to the pines

dancing there –
with gypsy moths
and starlight in her apron
would morning come
to find her on the lawn
soaked with dew –
more times than not
the night – a failing memory
eyelids fluttered opened
pearled with winter frost

silken chords of twisted vine
fingernails forsaken
the world she knows –
so unimpressed
with imitation bloom
brought to blood were scratches
scars define her beauty
arms to reach around her
begged her not to go

berry stains her tender lips –
confession of a lover
before the leaving had to come
she promised him always –
she’d find a way
another day –
to stitch their nights together
would come when shadows
traced the ground
and locust screamed
remember

as quietly –
sometimes to move
except in places secret
forever was the girl who kept their ways
apart from everything to loss
a life without convention
cathedrals – these were built
for she alone

once there came a city boy
might steal her from their garden –
though loving her
was more than verse could prove
she gathered to the forest then
and cried herself to slumber
the stars had fallen –
snowflakes in her hair

her diary mourned –
for what – she didn’t know
pages never understood
the wander in her soul

cycles of wheat ~

how sad it must be
for the fields ~ for the trees
when the buds and the babies
have gone
when the chill takes a bride
to the long winter night
and lies in the places
we loved

as memory caught
in briar and sage
clover as mid-summer heat
twinkling lights were weaved into braid
vows are crossed over –
(our fortunes to meet)
a lifetime or two
and not so apart
the swallow would nurse with the bear
the willow unfolds her branches of gold
while wishes make nest
in her hair

another year falls
as seasons to pass –
a way of life drifting away
tho once we were here –
so amazing (I know)

and now
there are none to replace
the nature of oak
to remember my hands
the bark grows much darker
these days
rings become rings
as history saves
stories from Luna to limb

a photograph here
the scene soon forgotten –
my memory the same
(it must be)
life rearranged to the cycles of wheat

a picture
of a picture
of me
