bend me not
with promises
broken by the gate
or pierce my heart
with sonnets –
soundless beak against my bane
answer me with lullabies
and verses still to be
count the days
til coming back
finds no room to leave
linger as a poem
just before the night begins
else I be sworn to longing
and words
to write again

something less ~

pardon this
the ill affair
of marigold to mayfly
trumpets folded softly
to the burning of the day

stay the night
that I might tell
of others long since missing
praises once we sang
now silently oppressed

touch – o please I beg you
touch me with your waking
spin for me a web
of words I never heard

have I no more
to give you
wisdom not to worry
dare we speak of living
as a cup of something less

and sit with jam
as curses fell
denouncing all that was
pretending not
the best we couldn’t see

blue the fingers
morning paper
folded on your knee
anxious eyes to reach
beyond the door

as one unto another
beg me stay
to turn the page
gather now the reasons
for the letting go this way

as flesh to fire
as words to wing –
dam the bloody river
and tell them all
I watched for you always

years before the locust swarm
nights betrayed the fourth
taking back my innocence
holding back the storm

slept before the news was come
of dying on the pasture
wore your name in two
against my skin

now the day is trading
all I meant to tell you then
of centipedes and winters
not as long

of blooms along the eastern ridge
deep the weeds to marry
babies pushed from branches
paint the lonely night

stay if for a moment
heed the waning of your soul
shifted as the moon became
a story I shall tell

twinkle twinkle ~

words were spinning
’round in darkness
faith unbound
no way defined –
was for me as fate predicted
stars made good
the wish for time

wishing wells
of everafter
sank beneath the dipper’s rim
curled into a piece of heaven
was there we fell
in love again

fell to earth
no eyes on looking
passed to breath unrecognized
midnight hues of silent wonder
sparkle still
on southern skies

what mortal wish
could we imagine –
made its way across the night
became of longing
will unspoken –

came as love
the soul’s delight

For this moment
of moments –
eternity waited
giving us room just to be.
Circles now spreading
our fate to discover –
but always we sit
with sweet memory

of the days just before
in places we wandered –
in joys that we shared
(none can take those away).
Tis the way we were guided
by stars barely crossing –
as years will remember
a smile
not the day

or the season, the tears
(so demanding).
Just a face bound to grace
we might never deserve –
(but we do)
and we will
for we love without wanting
more than this
that we keep
in the stores of our heart.

Can’t be lost on the way
to the one
we become –
or replaced by some other
(we don’t understand).

Love remains
in the truths
we leave in our passing –
years from now
just a word

– just a smile.

Author’s Note: Written for a friend who struggles to understand
an unfamiliar path, and hurting words from those she thought
she knew best. Ultimately, we choose what we keep. The rest – we set free.

as you know me ~

in the orange
of the lilies –
do you find me growing there
wrapped in vine
the shade of april moss

whenever night is come
into the shadows where you lay
do you dream that I’m the sun
and take me in

in the lullabye
that carries you
before your eyes awake
do you wonder to the me
that rests beside

or linger by
an empty field
so sure you saw me there
walking tween the rows
of bergamot

do you worry of the notes I left
fragile leaves of time
or nailed against a bridge
you burned before –
do you see the signs
(do you know the way)
I came to find you waiting –
as the final wash of tides
into the bay

do you hear my voice
in private –
some faint amen I spoke
hastened by a prayer to recollect
the rest we knew
the last to prove
there would be no other ‘other’
no fall me down
to pick me up
again

do echoes sit the places
where we gathered by the noon –
will life return
before the wind’s caress –
what of us is left to be
when everything is gone
will then the orange
bloom within
your vest

or cling to that which
beats within –
tho covered now by scars
whene’er you see the dove
without a song
will you know me
(as you know me)
in the way the briars sting

to close the night
before the sun gets in

fireflies at twilight
hands on the bible
a smile passed for trust
in between
no need to spend time
on the past unimportant
as the color of paper
neath words left unsaid

thirty years gone
since the season for leaving
fifteen more
than my mother was then
but the eyes of the soul
keep pictures much longer
a tear brushed away
not in time

and truth sealed tight
how many I’ve wondered
poison the sound of my name
falls to the reason
for waiting much longer
than the need to be known
by the curve of her arms

a baby once more
the future unfinished –
grace for another
of gifts passed between

Author’s Note: The relationship of mother to daughter is a cloth
weaved of many threads – love, faith, sorrow and forgiveness.
Because we are the same, we think we know things the same. The
reality is that we are as different as woman to man, wasp to
a firefly, a kiss to a curse.

I wonder if they’ve noticed
there’s a hole in paradise –
and all that choose
to walk across
shall tread immortal skies.

I wonder if they’ve noticed
the golden
turning green –
where grass uprooted pavement
and oceans pushed between.

I wonder if they’ve noticed
angels are come
to earth
and all we’ve wanted lingers
within this chosen birth.

I wonder if they’ve noticed
the freedoms in letting go –
how loving arms
shall bring us in
beyond the world we know.

I wonder if they’ve noticed ~
always is growing
still –
to strain against
the seams of time –
the essence of our will.

I wonder – how I wonder
whether heaven is here or there –
how much
of all we long to touch ~
is found in love we share.

I walked down the bed
was yesterday’s rising –
the creek sits in stillness
ten feet below
and waits for redemption
a sky filled with shudders –
tears bringing heaven
to save us again
falling the sorrows
stained in the passing –
burning my feet
with the pangs of goodbye

thirst keeps me begging
dreamed of an ocean
and seas without ceasing
I go there each night
as the paper is peeling
and windows sweat demons
crickets come in
by the way of the floor
nightbirds are crying
faith to willows
don’t fall (I will catch you)
before the moon rise

slow now the dancer
of gypsy to yellow –
as petals are folded
in prayer to the day –
deliver us whole
from the heat of your passing
drown us in loving
tears to our pain

Author’s Note: Yesterday, Nashville was the hottest place in the United
States, breaking a previous record from 1952. It was 109. When I left out
for lunch (even though I parked in the shade), my car was reading a temp
of 122. The earth cracks beneath the stare of the sun.

I knew you on Monday
loved you on Tuesday –
by Wednesday
you’d taken ahold of my heart
Thursday was pancakes
and warm maple syrup
By Friday – we planned
for the pulling apart

Saturday came
with the crushing of thunders –
erasing my fears
with your charms
Sunday I swore
you were nothing worth keeping
but laughed
as you rolled in my arms

A week of forever –
a lifetime made over
to fit in the place where the lies
used to be
Smelling of cedar
I kept every treasure
and wondered if ever –
you’d happen to me

Splinters and sweetgum
stars for the taking
Wrap me in Monday –
the first I dreamed of
Tell me you’re leaving
but stay for the morning –
lest night make you someday
the Tuesday I loved

to come along
as I was called
(sometimes before the sunrise)
and working then
for ways to understand

confessions of another sin
of wanting more
than lifetimes –
with reason to remember
where I’ve been

as quiet stirs
the midnight ’round
I wait up with the wonder
as sure will come
the dream where (still) I live

the house
the yard
the leaning porch
chickens never aging
(I wonder to the places they belong)

who’s to say
and what of me
could tell (and not sound foolish)
to know each step
and where the stone is gone

my hammer weighs
against my breast –
the barn door needs repairing
(and once or twice
the gate’s come off the hinge)

breezes blow me north and south
most nights –
right through the middle
roosters sit in rusty trees
and curse the early sun

splintered rails
and knee-deep weeds –
fruit jars filled with wishes
dancing rooms
(no need for shoes)
the rent has all been paid

I can’t be sure
the neighbors watch
my coming back for going –
were not for grace
I’d leave the night
for home
