I have no shame
only the memory of waking
to your touch
to your face
I was blinded then –
made deaf by your voice
speaking my name
calling me home
to a place remembered
from before you were mine
writ to a note
at the birth of my soul
practiced in dreams
one night
while you slept

I have no need
for promise –
words without the strength for this
a vow unspoken
whispered into pillows
when I’m missed
a call across the orchard
let the willing heart remain
without the want
for yesterdays –
when welcomed home again
a porch that needs repairing
a fence I cannot own
vines a verse becoming
streams of marigold
pull me back
a lazy hawk
where sunday morning glows
arms to reach around me
another hand
to hold

how sweet
to remember my coming
before
(indiscretion)
a walk ‘neath the pines
filled me with wonder
to coming back now –
from another time
longing
for purpose divine
from touch
came my breath –
and a kiss to endure
would sit in the depths
(the pools) of my soul
forsaken the reasons
for wanting to know
what I knew
from the start –
was my heart
letting go

the mail came
and the walk –
not much further
than before
when scented pages
threw a kiss
across the landscape
never threatened
by the rivers
or mountains drawn
between
a whisper spawned
of poetry
feelings
worn to rust
rhyme we never
claimed to understand
the way it was
forever
pressed into the fold
ink became
the memory of dreams
