for what (she didn’t know) ~

the diary
knows not of her dreams
or where the future lingers
more than once she’s wondered –
was she meant to live this long

for pages bent to tales behind
they seem the same in telling
another place ~ remit to grace
as midnight to the pines

dancing there –
with gypsy moths
and starlight in her apron
would morning come
to find her on the lawn
soaked with dew –
more times than not
the night – a failing memory
eyelids fluttered opened
pearled with winter frost

silken chords of twisted vine
fingernails forsaken
the world she knows –
so unimpressed
with imitation bloom
brought to blood were scratches
scars define her beauty
arms to reach around her
begged her not to go

berry stains her tender lips –
confession of a lover
before the leaving had to come
she promised him always –
she’d find a way
another day –
to stitch their nights together
would come when shadows
traced the ground
and locust screamed
remember

as quietly –
sometimes to move
except in places secret
forever was the girl who kept their ways
apart from everything to loss
a life without convention
cathedrals – these were built
for she alone

once there came a city boy
might steal her from their garden –
though loving her
was more than verse could prove
she gathered to the forest then
and cried herself to slumber
the stars had fallen –
snowflakes in her hair

her diary mourned –
for what – she didn’t know
pages never understood
the wander in her soul

cycles of wheat ~

how sad it must be
for the fields ~ for the trees
when the buds and the babies
have gone
when the chill takes a bride
to the long winter night
and lies in the places
we loved

as memory caught
in briar and sage
clover as mid-summer heat
twinkling lights were weaved into braid
vows are crossed over –
(our fortunes to meet)
a lifetime or two
and not so apart
the swallow would nurse with the bear
the willow unfolds her branches of gold
while wishes make nest
in her hair

another year falls
as seasons to pass –
a way of life drifting away
tho once we were here –
so amazing (I know)

and now
there are none to replace
the nature of oak
to remember my hands
the bark grows much darker
these days
rings become rings
as history saves
stories from Luna to limb

a photograph here
the scene soon forgotten –
my memory the same
(it must be)
life rearranged to the cycles of wheat

a picture
of a picture
of me

let me love ~

within these walls
of living
the lure of something more
than ever was
might come to me
for taking hold again

dare I close my eyes to hear
echoes of the promise –
warm these restless hands
to touch the soul
when laid upon my beating
to still the ache within
forgotten now the wonder why
love returned for me
forsaken not the bliss
before I dreamed

was never meant for knowing
yet I feel it just the same
a melody remembered (how)
to play
holding on with all I have
another place I am
renewed in me the faith
I need to see
the path to home (no faraway)
delivered me again
to love (I am)
warmth beyond this sun

of all I know
I know much more
in ways I cannot say
in choosing life
you choose to let me love
to touch you as
the first sunrise spills
light into the canyon
truth beyond this wonder
was there I loved
you first

rest on sundays ~

born into this land
of southern
between a wielder and the thumb
to rows forgot
no seed was planted
barns were built to block the sun
and measured
were the miles from worship
counted lives as souls to save
washed our feet in dirty buckets
swore to pick
before the rain

no sin confessed
could steal the harvest
lies recalled of summer sweat
locust swarmed
July to August
seven years (‘lest we forget)
I couldn’t say
of rest on sundays
cut my legs on splintered rails
broken beans
of string and strummer
bushels filled by pint or pail

heat burns patient
into evening
settles just beyond the fence
wonder waits
where none was planted
southern born
my lone
defense

rest
and I will find my way
into your favored dreams –
where feathers sail
and angels wait your will
the wind that is your calling
and I – a song you knew –
rest and I will find you
in places
I have loved

dream
and I (renewed)
shall rise
without the vow you kept
would never speak
of then –
tho sweeter now –
forever pleads our destinies –
ashes of the throne
where I am you
and you are come
again

stay
and in the years denied –
remember our december –
scarlet leaves
surrendered to the snow –
death within the darkness
concedes as life begins –
kiss the lips
that miss you
the taste that is
your name

if e’er I be forgotten
yet found within your words
a broken wing
a favored verse ~
a breathing almost gone
when brought me back
to find you ~
brought me back
to fill this need
a love reserved for saving
will you save
choices when the light
grows dim ~
fight when others run
give to me
the beat that is your own
if ever dawns
eternity
with ways to recollect
when first we met
another life ~
returned before
this one

were only I
your baby ~
wanting breath and praise
a place within your arms
against your soul ~
were only I
your baby ~
and waited lifetimes more
to move within your shadows
another fate to hold
were only I
your baby ~
forgotten by your sin
a light revealed
to shine upon
the grace you held
within

now I lay me ~

when death resolves
to claim me
with not a thought to breath –
and whispers of a longing I was given
me before –
and knew I not
the ways to come
or how the path would wind
beneath the shade of laurel
beyond the reach of light
and I for you
awaiting this
as promised (times) before –
though without right to reason
get me back
I need you more
than yesterday reminded me
the warmth
that is your touch
ashes swirl as memory –
secrets slept beneath the porch
never thought to pray
wasn’t meant to leave –
even now
I hold your name
to the safety of my musing –
faraway
of kindred flame
belonged to me
the story you were writing
(shall I tell)
of where we were
when night was come
I loved you
(loved you well)
forgotten not the heavens
I saw waking in your eyes –
was all I knew
when begged again
of love (before I die)

to hold you now ~

of might you were
and I – a pittance –
a cast of shade
no plans to keep
passions blooming through the winter –
icy petals melt to sleet
upon the heels
of sad reflection –
slipped into the past
somehow –
to resurrect the sweet reminder
that I was come
to hold you now –

desire to press
your soul to garner –
words so easy
ink too dark
nights grown long
with every telling
coals to cool
the seeker’s mark –
of recognition
I’m returning – as you were mine
some other day
passed as blue into the river –
eased surrenders
into grey
and caught my tears
were loosed too early –
truth denied one last refrain
you were might
and I – a pittance –
there lies the wound
beneath the stain –

touch and go –
yet stay a moment
hide with me beneath the stairs
take my dreams
and let them keep you –
safe from life – my love to wear
of tattered coat –
and velvet trousers –
locket strung – a lover’s chord
rests against the drum
long silent –
forever passed
without a word

unremembering ~

was said
there’ll be another time
I wonder if that’s true
when I will find you waiting here
when I shall come to you
when I will read
and you will write
our words will spill the same
how many lives may pass as none
to wonder why we came
you feel it now
I know it’s real – this longing in my soul
was made for words and words will come
how is that you know
I read it once – you taught me well
how could that ever be
another time – another bed –
a place of destiny
there are words
and there are words
that’s how I’m bound to you
as breath to breath
as earth to sun
I know this much is true
I’ll find you when
we touch
we love
we dream
I love that smile
it’s been a while
through times of disbelief
you knew me then
and now again –
the smell of burning leaves
would rivers know
the way to home –
will bring you back to me
