winds to carry me ~

the rain falls gentle now
though still the thunder threatens
and blackest night
is framed in light somehow

remembering a moment passed
when all the world was still
birds were gathered silent
on the line –

their quiet so consuming
there was something surely come
when first a breeze
ran coursing through
the pines –

as heads were turned
and hearts were stopped –
the sky
a swirling flame
my hair was blowing (arrows)
til I was almost blind

but in that space
of nothingness –
uncertainty of signs
a voice was heard so clear
and I was saved
another time –

for another day –
another moment’s grace
when the winds will come
to steal my breath
away

beholding to the sun ~

evening comes so quickly
anymore my body aches –
remembers back
another time
I danced

never knew to this –
a nested dove
crooning through the night –
with promise of one more
that I might rise

returning as another child –
asking not for more
than ages fell
as leaves to kiss the ground –
are memories made less by life –
a name I never wore
secrets blown to places
you can’t see

pieces of a puzzle
once I wondered how they fit
why I came
and where you are today

when longing counts
as seasons lost –
without one more goodbye
shadows sprawl beneath
my favored oak –

dew to roust the daisies
from their slumber –
moments there
they’ve tried to leave
but as I am
they are –

slow to rise
beholding to the sun

life in-between ~

He said.

Let me ask you something,
If you don’t mind.
Lay my head on your shoulder
Wrap myself in your storm,
Where it’s safe
Where it’s warm.
Let me tell you something.
I promise it’s something real.
Let me tell you something,
Something about my self.
Something I’ve never told a soul
Not even myself
Out of fear
Out of the knowledge I wouldn’t be understood,
Known
Confirming my solitude
Confirming I’m alone.

I’m a middle aged, middle child
Born to middle class means,
In the middle of a country
That values extremes.
I don’t know what that means
If anything
In the greater scheme
If anything,
But I do know
I do believe
I’m happiest in my middle life,
That world I find between.
Between the absurdity of the waking world
And the lucid world of dreams
Where anything is possible
And nothing is what it seems.
There lies the creative world
Combining the two.
There I find that amazing world
That led me straight to you.

She said.

I’m from another place
just south and to the east
most all my days
spent barefoot
‘cept those
spent on my knees
‘cept those I walked
in the darkness
searching for a light
would burn
with me
the brighter
of suns within the night
written word
and followed maps
we made of yesterday
across the plains
o’er other sands
would lead me back
this way
from middle
to the north
south of everything
your road
a gravel lane
you chiseled every rock
were steps (to where I’m going)
a path to bring me home

He said.

So here we are.
A fortuitous interlude
Where life fades away
Concerns and fear allay
Dreams and visions hold sway.
An oasis
In the midst of this convoluted jungle.
Temperate winds
Beneath a sky so blue.
But it’s not like us to savor the moment
It’s not like us to let time slip by
Unexamined, unquestioned.
So we search the drifting clouds
For purpose,
For meaning.
But it’s up to us to provide that meaning,
Wouldn’t you agree?
Meaning is the gift we give
Purpose the reason we survive, we live?

She said.

There’s so much more
than this,
a life to spend in search of bliss
as sighs held captive to a kiss…
begin to give us answer.
There’s wings
with light their only truth,
days behind we hid the proof,
gave the best to wasted youth,
knew we’d come to nothing.
Let’s just pretend
for a moment now
we’re in this place
as fate allowed,
will find our way to truth
(somehow),
much stronger for the journey.

She said, it’s no more
than a day
just close your eyes
and know the way
is open where we left before
the same we came
to follow…

close your eyes
reach out your hand
there’s much
that I don’t understand
but I’ll show you what I do
and then…
when we have passed
into the light
we’ll remember this
(redeeming night)
when truth bespoke
of wisdom’s plight
was here we lingered
out of sight
an oasis
for the moment

He said.

You make me laugh
At myself
At the simplicity of it all.
Why did I make it so complicated?
When it was as plain and true and beautiful
As you
And this moment.
This moment.

So long I’ve wandered
So long I’ve searched
Desperate to find reason
To conquer why
To slay doubt
And all the while
It was here
In your arms.

The only truth
The only meaning,
The only reason,
To love and be loved.
No matter how briefly.
How deeply.

How lovely.

She said.

was not for you decided
I never asked
(how could I ask)
when was always mine
to give (to hold)
however brief
(eternity shall pass
and start all over)
was not for you decided
I never asked
(why would I ask).

I was the bud
before the blossom
the strength within the seed
a vision there of meadows in the sun
swirling cups of red and gold
perfume of a kingdom
dancing spires of swans
before the lake

I was breath
before the being
spirit of the song
was music played –
so seldom could you hear
my orchestra of lullabies
the breeze between the storms
the bending birch
as lowly fell to prayer
before amen

I was light
before the daybreak –
a flame to torch the dark
a candle somewhere burned
to guide you home –
atop the hill
beyond the veil –
wherever you were lost
forgotten now the reason
you were gone

I was rain
before the waters rose –
a thirst before the drink
tides beneath an ocean
where you sank –
when left alone
without the truth –
to be your northern star –
I was the map
within your hand
you couldn’t read

I was a voice
before you noticed –
remembered to your dreams
a rhythm much the same
to match your stride –
a pendulum of promise
returning love to life –
I was the place
where you were going –
before you knew
my light

answers I’ve forgotten ~

Whenever this –
a time for asking
the wonder comes again
as dreams are cast
in seeking truth
I know –

for what was meant
returning now
the reason I must stay
to clear the path
I walked along
as me –
another day

beside
this last tomorrow
forgiveness almost won
no more than life
a choice to love again –
for answers
I’ve forgotten –
questions mark my way
a glance behind
for where I passed
I know –
but I can’t say

forget me again ~

we found the way
tho surely meant
we couldn’t keep the traces –
would scarce recall
breath without a seed

we’d come in search
of where the petals warmed
(beneath the drifting)
of where the dogwood pink
was lost a bloom or two
a twig or so –
another time
(forget) to know me now

we have no way –
no certain proof
of rhyme before this rhythm
a promise made
no measure ever kept –
confession made of sleepless nights
(the skies were younger then)
tears to show
where we were lost
in finding us (again)

there’s an ancient oak
by a crooked fence
making sense of waiting –
a place where destiny still reeks of smoke
a hidden patch of frozen time –
ablaze beneath the branches
where once we were alone
and nothing else

do you remember now the reasons
this choice to be again
to find the way –
with will to understand
why clouds still gather softly
above the deepest snow
a time we scarce recall –

the day we loved

serenade resigned ~

fret not
as shadows linger
would move my soul
to mourn –
surrendered love in vain
to ease the ache

returned to me
as wanderlust
I shall not ask for more
would scorn
the poet’s hand
for one more line

or bleed
the violet evening shade
of memories unsettled
to soothe the day
before the moon is come

for this refrain
my longing has no place
but in my telling
of moments
where there are no words
but those of faraway

take to heed
these tender hands
this temporary madness
decided by a change in heart –
serenade resigned

breath to still
this wonder –
hurt without a balm
tears can yet remind me
of my love

beyond this night
another waits
and there
for dreaming made
a bed of feather flowers
asleep on wandering

would angels ring
so sweet the bell
to lure me
from my solace
or count for one
the final call to home

tethered
by this evermore
and weighted with confession
as one who loved
with everything –

before the shadows fell

I am ~

it sits with me
most nights til dawn
awake before the worry
stills my eager drum
lest I would go
empty to the breaking
lost myself within
visions come without a word
to say

in keeping for the moment
let the ego sleep –
carved to truth
against the sunlit page
curls and tiny crosses –
names rewritten twice
– speak
o please don’t tell me
how it goes

as I am one
of mysteries –
dark – these eyes of soul
chalice where tomorrow’s trust
is stored
verse and line to enter in –
psalms to raise the sun
flowers without fail
another bud

alone in this –
a silent bliss
quiet filled with love –
tho somewhere in the distance
I can hear
laughter ringing (echoes)
children skipping stones

– so faraway
yet here I am
to touch

without the grain ~

was just before the morn
silver coursed the sky
pregnant with the musing
bleached white crooked boards
(left without the grain)
a lowly thought (indifference)
doors we opened from the black
I couldn’t see before
hiding Viking splinters
copper hinges from my sight
beyond the place
where webs were breaking free
another shadows ninth
I must have dreamed
(you dreamed of me)

couldn’t see
beyond the light
was anchored to the rug
ran between the bathroom and hall
a tapestry of peacocks
sapphire blue and gold
quiet how they
flew about and never
blocked the way
kept the entry clean
in want for morning sun
slept in pools of maybe
for my taking
couldn’t understand
the truth (was ever I to be)
relieved to be
relieved to feel at all

white moths circle ’round
to let me through
beyond the room
where books are kept
vow and board together
save the past in chords of mystery
some post of prose (a favored verse)
forgotten me a poet
once proclaimed
(would be the best)
telling now of troubles
I have loved

around me folded ~

ღ

once before
I can’t remember
how I passed or where I woke
dreamed of somewhere
warm and tender –
night was passed
as breath to smoke
as gentle arms
around me folded –
whispers fell as morning dew
lost in loving (ever)afters –
noontide glows
with thoughts of you
