marry me now
while the cookies are baking
could be we’ll elope
and the house
will burn down
they’ll find us in cardboard
cream cheese and sprinkles
a recipe made
from love long ago

and sifted so sweetly
these candies and karma
begged you to stay
I’d do you up right
warm from the oven
and held to my longing
maple and sugar
in the shape
of my heart

powdered assurance
wax paper lining
somewhere they wait
with tongues
ill prepared
for what might be offered
of essence done over
a memory of heaven –
a kitchen
glowed bright

chocolate and butter
dropped by the spoonful
tied with a string
as love to bestow
stolen the taste
was a kiss unintended
counters uncluttered
with ribbon and dough

marry me now
while the cookies are baking
could be
we’ll elope
and the house
will burn down

last I knew
the path grown over –
trees I loved were bending low
vine and cup with
secrets whispered –
of where we passed here
once ago

hands the same
though smaller somehow
tortured bark as web to ring –
learned of these
the lowly falling
more than colors died
for spring

come the passion now
for harvest
spare these ears
your lonesome knell
fill me up with sunlight
scattered –
ground to love
my feet so well

passed as years
through vein and valley –
crossed to crest
before the snow
hung a shade
of scarlet ribbon –
lifted there the skies
below

lark and lily –
worse for wearing
patient teachers (tears to dry)
eyes beseech
the naked branches
faith remains –
to wonder why

evening comes so quickly
anymore my body aches –
remembers back
another time
I danced

never knew to this –
a nested dove
crooning through the night –
with promise of one more
that I might rise

returning as another child –
asking not for more
than ages fell
as leaves to kiss the ground –
are memories made less by life –
a name I never wore
secrets blown to places
you can’t see

pieces of a puzzle
once I wondered how they fit
why I came
and where you are today

when longing counts
as seasons lost –
without one more goodbye
shadows sprawl beneath
my favored oak –

dew to roust the daisies
from their slumber –
moments there
they’ve tried to leave
but as I am
they are –

slow to rise
beholding to the sun

days til then
and thought we’d made it
when fate caught us asleep
pitching tents
and chasing wings (of flame)
never thought to think
I’d trade forever –
just to hold your hand
in the light before the nightbird gave
a story worth the telling
babies came –
and winter wore our names

while there the golden
wheat we gathered
burned the forest down
I wonder –
now I wander back
and there’s nothing here
but home

mason jars
and homemade whiskey
pewter dim and silver barns
rust beneath the want for something
straw the pale of evening sun
Kentucky blue
begun – to close my eyes
succumb to wishes
give them all another chance (to fly)
let me love
in fields of clover –
let me die in fields of flight

give to verse
this dreamer (dreaming)
poem writ of moving on
seas returned – the lowly sailor –
backward here into the dawn

was set adrift
on oars of maple
pinned aloft the noble bride
set a course for warmer waters
but kept a place (for me) aside
written here – a tattooed letter
button birds and woodsong shame
lacey lace
in cardboard boxes
sheets to never fit the same

proof of heaven
a moment glistens –
forever waits the night (I hold)
touch the locket
and claim the promise –
cools the skin
that hides the soul

gonna leave this place
in pieces –
like some other dream
(I dreamed)
gonna turn around –
tho who will notice me
gonna shake it off
(and not look back)
on where I was that day
gonna drive all night
to nowhere (I can say) –
til the road turns dirt
and empties (every care) onto the breeze
gonna change my name
and pen another verse
gonna leave a sign –
that only you
can see

From here to there
it’s not so far – highways
lined with crosses.
Bridges closed (as waters rose)
and took our pay in loss.
I know you cry –
I share your tears –
Some nights I dare not sleep
for fear I’d drown –
(they lay me down)
with promises to keep.

There are places still
(remember me)
a flash of brilliant flame.
A breath beyond the twilight –
I hold you now (the same).

You speak
and I still listen –
even now my body grieves –
Forgotten all I swore to lose
(so crazy to believe).
Just stay a while –
don’t worry
for the wind or where it blows –
Tell me why you’ve come again
(for reasons I should know).

Your secret’s safe –
there’s no one here
but me (if that’s alright) –
The southern suns are sworn
to shine – much brighter
through the night.

how sad it must be
for the fields ~ for the trees
when the buds and the babies
have gone
when the chill takes a bride
to the long winter night
and lies in the places
we loved

as memory caught
in briar and sage
clover as mid-summer heat
twinkling lights were weaved into braid
vows are crossed over –
(our fortunes to meet)
a lifetime or two
and not so apart
the swallow would nurse with the bear
the willow unfolds her branches of gold
while wishes make nest
in her hair

another year falls
as seasons to pass –
a way of life drifting away
tho once we were here –
so amazing (I know)

and now
there are none to replace
the nature of oak
to remember my hands
the bark grows much darker
these days
rings become rings
as history saves
stories from Luna to limb

a photograph here
the scene soon forgotten –
my memory the same
(it must be)
life rearranged to the cycles of wheat

a picture
of a picture
of me

born into this land
of southern
between a wielder and the thumb
to rows forgot
no seed was planted
barns were built to block the sun
and measured
were the miles from worship
counted lives as souls to save
washed our feet in dirty buckets
swore to pick
before the rain

no sin confessed
could steal the harvest
lies recalled of summer sweat
locust swarmed
July to August
seven years (‘lest we forget)
I couldn’t say
of rest on sundays
cut my legs on splintered rails
broken beans
of string and strummer
bushels filled by pint or pail

heat burns patient
into evening
settles just beyond the fence
wonder waits
where none was planted
southern born
my lone
defense

would I wait
beneath the falls
that separate these worlds I know –
forgotten to the summers
we were spring
forsaken for a lifetime
the way the water moved –
the sound of laughter
bare feet on the path

remembered not the reason
for promised come again –
names have shifted
granite worn away –
forgotten was the life
I swore to never leave behind
a hand within my hand
I let to fall

unlikely as the first snowflake
blown to mid-July
as autumn grasses gathered
to the sea
returning now
if only for a moment –
you were come
into this place
again (remember me)

e’er breath return
with only one condition –

crazy –
how it happens (still)
a moment so familiar –
the taste that was a name
becomes a sigh

wherever this
I came again –
into these rites of spring
and waiting as a junebug
for july ~
for in the scent
that bears the earth
reminders of a love
returned to bud –
a promise made
the seed
