was born
within the starlit night
when given chance the lover rose
and flew with tattered sails
into the moon

spurned the reach
of junipers
to rest beyond the dark –
swelled within the arms
of sycamore

children of our spirit sun –
daughters of the light
spoke of one we loved –
a romeo

no different
than the prophet come
and passed outside our door
heard us sing –
and spoke for years of this

the time they knew
when heard us tell
of other paths returning
a life we might have lived
within a dream

but never knew
the details –
who would wash the dishes
and who would pull the weeds
beside the bed

dare me not to heed my heart
a voice of sighs
resounding –
screams sometimes
and I –
I sing along

melodies of far away
distant constellations
were traced along the beaches
of your spine

universes
scattered there
without the night to carry
though once I came
and warmed to them
my hands
