I’ve come of age
a little bit late –
way past the point
I reached my prime…
My eyes now open
(sometimes I blink)
to what has been
and was never mine.

I’ve hit my knees
and stood up strong –
sometimes I thought
I never would.
I’ve seen the best
and worst of me
more faith than some –
more right than good.

Surrender has no
business here –
for falling back
on sleepless nights.
I’ve written days
in blood and truth –
and traded ink
by candlelight.

Do we ever lose
in letting go…
for only then
is our purpose met.
When comes the time
of difference –
in what we wished
and what we let.

choice (to choose) ~

was past the need for choosing
when I chose again (to be)
no memory remained of
what you said
(or what I heard)
was only my (desire)
a need to search each wonder why
and when at last to understand
reasons as I would
choose (to choose) again

roads to breech
and days between
paths took me away
rural roads
and tin roofs (singing still)
boxes nailed from tree to tree
a river flowed right by
(had I forgotten
just how blue your winter kiss)

I waded in
teased by leaves
were somewhere spinning songs
pieces left of me (I couldn’t place)

held me there
sad as sails
(kaleidescope of colors)
pulled beneath the rapids
by the flood

forever breaks
in ripples along familiar shores
stretching clear and deep
to raise the proof
of time (a sweet surrender)
not as young as I was then
leaves fell from branches
of the tree where first we loved

lost from where they came
they go (again)

every now and then ~

with the faith of love
returning –
clouds beyond the smoke
and poems someone wrote to me
this way –

of serenades
in mid July –
April now forgotten
cept when the night birds
send the chill to bed

and come the frost
to take of vows –
spinning scarlet
dancers
wrapped in stems of lace –
the latest style

wished upon
a morning star
one night in late November –
tied a secret
to a firefly
and waited for the Spring

silver queen

grant me now
this moment rare
when all the world goes mute
though somewhere I can hear
a symphony
but know I not the rhythm
or whether meant for me –
haunted by familiar melodies

of crickets on the orchard
wing`eds come to roost
stars – I know them all
(as they know me)
places on the hardwood
I could trace them (in the dark)
for times I’ve spent alone
they waited me

and worried not
the lateness of the hour
opened every window (let me be)
took me from my brokenness
swore to help me fly
kept to watch me over
in the darkest storms of life

nights I would not walk
to find myself

of all I know –
the love they keep
would never let me fall
or change the crops
from silver queen to sweet

seasons
have no purpose here
(I am always spring)
splinters worn away
in coming home

crazy moon ~

I can’t be made
to be the one –
the one to make things better
Been working that
so long I can’t recall
a time before
of month old tears –
and nothing in my pocket
I wonder what it means
to see it all

to lives before
and I can’t do a thing
about those choices
– been nipping
at my heels
and I can’t pay
Unsure of my uncertainty
a balance to my breaking –
Gave my body to a preacher
just to take my sins
away

The land is hard
where weeds grow strong
and no one seems to notice –
got troubles of their own
they can’t see
Who am I to think
there must be
something here I’m missing –
the whole world thinks
I’m crazy – I must be

Though not the same
as anyone
much deeper than they bother –
how many times
been broken
just to have myself remade

Coming back
for taking back –
I search the sky for answers
Damn that yellow moon
so far from me –
spinning wheel
the wind to blow
orchards needing water
The creek’s been dry
for nigh on fifty years

Burn the barn
unlatch the screen
and throw away my apron –
don’t worry long
for stories I believe
There’s something here –
more than storms fortelling

Lord I need to feel
the arms of rain

where we were ~

more of me
is just this much
a season born of wasting
waves where once
the colors scattered
sweetly to the day
were crushed beneath
our summer slippers
waltzing past
the meadow’s green
touch so fleeting –
who remembers
where we were
when we flew away

unafraid ~

waiting
and unafraid
unafraid to be seen (to see)
trusting of love
(the truest) to go
wherever I would go
(even as I must dream)

away the dark
restored the light
as love (might I declare)
my only proof
when pieces fell
(and fit) together there

destinies are now
(beginning)
and where I am
no trace of me
exists remembered
but what was left
of lessons
(come to be)

when given light
(circles into circles)
balance for the fear(ed)
was not for me
important as the dance
(of unafraid)
sparrows breech the clouds
as angels flock
(beneath)

whisperings ~

my grandmother knew
as grandmothers know
when first they held us to light
something (but who has the words
to describe it)
hush (now the sins of) your heart
take it down
burn the bed
whispering flutters
madness to meaning
though everyone shades (their soul)
from the truth
a sign unexpected
broken and scattered
there goes the star
now ahead
won’t say a thing
about stories repeated
things we might know
(we don’t know)
messages can’t be heard
above screaming
where I am (listening)
grandmother knows

connected ~

everything
is changed
nothing meant
to be the same
tho I wished it still
for once
til I could take it in
was a picture that I framed
held the shutter
for too long

where was the light
I waited for
what became of this
the other night
was left before
these robins were not stationed
on the roof
a dove or two
I noticed them
but never did they whine
not even when she lost him
(the mystery forgot)
she couldn’t cry
couldn’t share with me her pain

still there she was
a shadow of his life

but the robins
how they boast
of every treasure that they find
a breath of fur
a strand of silk
tinsel for the nest
no one can build the same
busy there beneath the edge
where shingle meets with shade
the children lost
the baby fell beyond the
lowest branch

how was I to know
when the weeds were tall
and looking until dark
strained against the weakest
of the summer snares
were others there
but what had changed
where was change intended
I want the one
where is the one
the baby of the babes
the longing one
of these
the last to fly

let’s sit the night
I’ll burn out every bulb
along the path
raise the lantern up
and melt each candle into wood
we’ll find the one
was leaving

forgot to let you go

beyond the gate ~

meet me there
beyond the shadows
where the purple dogwood grows
that I might look
into the eyes
that once adored me so

meet me there
so I might be
remembered to your kiss
a hand within
your gentle hand
a bliss beyond your bliss

would I be less
for wanting more
than the memory
of your sigh
ears attuned to music
each haunting lullaby

of far away
yet near enough
as sacred truth restored
beyond the gate
where blossoms burst
in loving hues once more

returning as tomorrow
there begins eternity
another day
remains of love
when you have come
for me

across the way
just down the road
we walked so long ago
when stood beside
forever
the purple dogwood grows
