everything
is changed
nothing meant
to be the same
tho I wished it still
for once
til I could take it in
was a picture that I framed
held the shutter
for too long

where was the light
I waited for
what became of this
the other night
was left before
these robins were not stationed
on the roof
a dove or two
I noticed them
but never did they whine
not even when she lost him
(the mystery forgot)
she couldn’t cry
couldn’t share with me her pain

still there she was
a shadow of his life

but the robins
how they boast
of every treasure that they find
a breath of fur
a strand of silk
tinsel for the nest
no one can build the same
busy there beneath the edge
where shingle meets with shade
the children lost
the baby fell beyond the
lowest branch

how was I to know
when the weeds were tall
and looking until dark
strained against the weakest
of the summer snares
were others there
but what had changed
where was change intended
I want the one
where is the one
the baby of the babes
the longing one
of these
the last to fly

let’s sit the night
I’ll burn out every bulb
along the path
raise the lantern up
and melt each candle into wood
we’ll find the one
was leaving

forgot to let you go

no more than me ~

from the story
never finished –
comes the next to read these lines
an end I wrote –
I swear I’ll now erase
pretty as I ever was
dreams for love to dream
an answer to the
question –
who am I
a drifter
fell from fairytale
wonder to be found –
daylight where the night reigned yesterday
words no one can give me
wait in silence
on my tongue –
a story started new
remembers me

beyond the gate ~

meet me there
beyond the shadows
where the purple dogwood grows
that I might look
into the eyes
that once adored me so

meet me there
so I might be
remembered to your kiss
a hand within
your gentle hand
a bliss beyond your bliss

would I be less
for wanting more
than the memory
of your sigh
ears attuned to music
each haunting lullaby

of far away
yet near enough
as sacred truth restored
beyond the gate
where blossoms burst
in loving hues once more

returning as tomorrow
there begins eternity
another day
remains of love
when you have come
for me

across the way
just down the road
we walked so long ago
when stood beside
forever
the purple dogwood grows

powdered assurance ~

marry me now
while the cookies are baking
could be we’ll elope
and the house
will burn down
they’ll find us in cardboard
cream cheese and sprinkles
a recipe made
from love long ago

and sifted so sweetly
these candies and karma
begged you to stay
I’d do you up right
warm from the oven
and held to my longing
maple and sugar
in the shape
of my heart

powdered assurance
wax paper lining
somewhere they wait
with tongues
ill prepared
for what might be offered
of essence done over
a memory of heaven –
a kitchen
glowed bright

chocolate and butter
dropped by the spoonful
tied with a string
as love to bestow
stolen the taste
was a kiss unintended
counters uncluttered
with ribbon and dough

marry me now
while the cookies are baking
could be
we’ll elope
and the house
will burn down

home ~

last I knew
the path grown over –
trees I loved were bending low
vine and cup with
secrets whispered –
of where we passed here
once ago

hands the same
though smaller somehow
tortured bark as web to ring –
learned of these
the lowly falling
more than colors died
for spring

come the passion now
for harvest
spare these ears
your lonesome knell
fill me up with sunlight
scattered –
ground to love
my feet so well

passed as years
through vein and valley –
crossed to crest
before the snow
hung a shade
of scarlet ribbon –
lifted there the skies
below

lark and lily –
worse for wearing
patient teachers (tears to dry)
eyes beseech
the naked branches
faith remains –
to wonder why

(I’ll find a way)

It seems –
I have a notion
of what we need to do –
let’s run away
(I’ll find a way)
to make your dreams
come true.
I’ll draw a map
if you bring a light –
might be a place too far.
We’ll sleep in tents
of jasmine –
blankets pulled of stars.

Lay your head
against this longing –
let my thunder be your song.
(Ancient drum)
is this heart beating –
listen now
(it is your own).

Take my hands
and still my wanting –
soothe this wandering within.
Tell me now the stories
coming back
(as one) as we begin –
to understand (I’ve waited here)
to know you
(as I do).

Where I am warmed
against your love –
and love our (only) truth.

evening comes so quickly
anymore my body aches –
remembers back
another time
I danced

never knew to this –
a nested dove
crooning through the night –
with promise of one more
that I might rise

returning as another child –
asking not for more
than ages fell
as leaves to kiss the ground –
are memories made less by life –
a name I never wore
secrets blown to places
you can’t see

pieces of a puzzle
once I wondered how they fit
why I came
and where you are today

when longing counts
as seasons lost –
without one more goodbye
shadows sprawl beneath
my favored oak –

dew to roust the daisies
from their slumber –
moments there
they’ve tried to leave
but as I am
they are –

slow to rise
beholding to the sun

life in-between ~

He said.

Let me ask you something,
If you don’t mind.
Lay my head on your shoulder
Wrap myself in your storm,
Where it’s safe
Where it’s warm.
Let me tell you something.
I promise it’s something real.
Let me tell you something,
Something about my self.
Something I’ve never told a soul
Not even myself
Out of fear
Out of the knowledge I wouldn’t be understood,
Known
Confirming my solitude
Confirming I’m alone.

I’m a middle aged, middle child
Born to middle class means,
In the middle of a country
That values extremes.
I don’t know what that means
If anything
In the greater scheme
If anything,
But I do know
I do believe
I’m happiest in my middle life,
That world I find between.
Between the absurdity of the waking world
And the lucid world of dreams
Where anything is possible
And nothing is what it seems.
There lies the creative world
Combining the two.
There I find that amazing world
That led me straight to you.

She said.

I’m from another place
just south and to the east
most all my days
spent barefoot
‘cept those
spent on my knees
‘cept those I walked
in the darkness
searching for a light
would burn
with me
the brighter
of suns within the night
written word
and followed maps
we made of yesterday
across the plains
o’er other sands
would lead me back
this way
from middle
to the north
south of everything
your road
a gravel lane
you chiseled every rock
were steps (to where I’m going)
a path to bring me home

He said.

So here we are.
A fortuitous interlude
Where life fades away
Concerns and fear allay
Dreams and visions hold sway.
An oasis
In the midst of this convoluted jungle.
Temperate winds
Beneath a sky so blue.
But it’s not like us to savor the moment
It’s not like us to let time slip by
Unexamined, unquestioned.
So we search the drifting clouds
For purpose,
For meaning.
But it’s up to us to provide that meaning,
Wouldn’t you agree?
Meaning is the gift we give
Purpose the reason we survive, we live?

She said.

There’s so much more
than this,
a life to spend in search of bliss
as sighs held captive to a kiss…
begin to give us answer.
There’s wings
with light their only truth,
days behind we hid the proof,
gave the best to wasted youth,
knew we’d come to nothing.
Let’s just pretend
for a moment now
we’re in this place
as fate allowed,
will find our way to truth
(somehow),
much stronger for the journey.

She said, it’s no more
than a day
just close your eyes
and know the way
is open where we left before
the same we came
to follow…

close your eyes
reach out your hand
there’s much
that I don’t understand
but I’ll show you what I do
and then…
when we have passed
into the light
we’ll remember this
(redeeming night)
when truth bespoke
of wisdom’s plight
was here we lingered
out of sight
an oasis
for the moment

He said.

You make me laugh
At myself
At the simplicity of it all.
Why did I make it so complicated?
When it was as plain and true and beautiful
As you
And this moment.
This moment.

So long I’ve wandered
So long I’ve searched
Desperate to find reason
To conquer why
To slay doubt
And all the while
It was here
In your arms.

The only truth
The only meaning,
The only reason,
To love and be loved.
No matter how briefly.
How deeply.

How lovely.

She said.

was not for you decided
I never asked
(how could I ask)
when was always mine
to give (to hold)
however brief
(eternity shall pass
and start all over)
was not for you decided
I never asked
(why would I ask).

answers I’ve forgotten ~

Whenever this –
a time for asking
the wonder comes again
as dreams are cast
in seeking truth
I know –

for what was meant
returning now
the reason I must stay
to clear the path
I walked along
as me –
another day

beside
this last tomorrow
forgiveness almost won
no more than life
a choice to love again –
for answers
I’ve forgotten –
questions mark my way
a glance behind
for where I passed
I know –
but I can’t say

days til then
and thought we’d made it
when fate caught us asleep
pitching tents
and chasing wings (of flame)
never thought to think
I’d trade forever –
just to hold your hand
in the light before the nightbird gave
a story worth the telling
babies came –
and winter wore our names

while there the golden
wheat we gathered
burned the forest down
I wonder –
now I wander back
and there’s nothing here
but home

mason jars
and homemade whiskey
pewter dim and silver barns
rust beneath the want for something
straw the pale of evening sun
Kentucky blue
begun – to close my eyes
succumb to wishes
give them all another chance (to fly)
let me love
in fields of clover –
let me die in fields of flight

give to verse
this dreamer (dreaming)
poem writ of moving on
seas returned – the lowly sailor –
backward here into the dawn

was set adrift
on oars of maple
pinned aloft the noble bride
set a course for warmer waters
but kept a place (for me) aside
written here – a tattooed letter
button birds and woodsong shame
lacey lace
in cardboard boxes
sheets to never fit the same

proof of heaven
a moment glistens –
forever waits the night (I hold)
touch the locket
and claim the promise –
cools the skin
that hides the soul
