daylight spawns
as butter blooms
unnoticed by the snow
gold and silver sashes
wrap the day
reminding me (I’m certain)
of others I have known
a taste of smoke
the smell of fresh cut hay
in late September
sometimes into the night
another beat is come
history repeated
turns upon itself anew
a blanket pulled across
forgotten dawns

beyond this set
another told
of places not yet seen
a want for understanding
wakes the dreamer
(to the dream)
in search of proof
of hearts held close –
a sense of other lives
choice before this choosing
as destiny survived
to lure us back
(a thought away)
and there –
we love again
caught in realms
of truth (and smoke)
before this path
began

keep me not
from dreaming
else my soul forget to fly
and soon betray the thought
that would be wild
was e’er a lifeline
made a map
and feathered into vine
cut to thumb
and tracing fist to nail
choosing then
to disagree
a different fate to claim
as raven raised to wave
against the dawn
forsaken now
the line to stretch
across the morning sky
safe was never meant
to keep us long

favored verse ~

I know this place
(the way it feels)
burning leaves on Monday –

E’en now
the dawn pours warmth
across my bed
as quietly I still myself
(another morning after) –
to take of breath
(tis all I am)
and wonder
where you are.

Was life
I never meant to live
given me for holding.
Eternity or something less –
always the two
– made one –
A story I’ve been telling
dare I speak of love aloud
lost (as truth) –
a silence I endure –
as sunlight floats
unnoticed
by the chill.

Memories
come as sleep –
longing moves the curtains
while soft – a favored verse
is pressed to light.
Words are left without a sound –
(places without slumber)
a line to fade
in wondering
I’ve come.

everlasting ~

I was here
before you knew me –

I was the
first cold night
of January –
the last hot day of June
I was the rush
beneath the April lake
the blue that made
you shiver

I was the song you couldn’t know
and still you sang

I was the warmth
of wornout mittens
your named stitched just inside –
a scarf that smelled like someone
you had loved
I was a day old dream
and a time of truce
becoming yesterday

the only word
you swore to never speak
I was the prayer
I was the promise
I was the night you knew
would come –
a dandelion blown into
forever by the breeze –
a light to burn
when all the stars are done

I am the flame
resolved to warm you –
arms that hold you still
life to live (I know you)

and I am you
again

Whispers
softly echo
across the universe –
planets move aside
and lovers swoon.

ஜ۩۞۩ஜ

Rivers churn
as ripples form
to wash the world away –
while here again
I save a place
for you.

ஜ۩۞۩ஜ

Quiet now
remembering
the way we came –
long before the autumn red
the winter white.

ஜ۩۞۩ஜ

Dreams – and you
were sleeping –
did you hear me speak
your name –
quiet as the sunrise
greets the tide.

of sundays
there were others
and I saw them written there
forgave (of me)
another life
path without direction

reflection held
this crazy dawn
in a puddle never dried
turquoise tears
we sweated by the night
shown to me
were places
lessons put behind
as who I loved –
it all seems so familiar

dare I stay much longer
let the shadows take me in
longing for a love
I might have saved
held as close
much closer now
the reasons unimportant
where once I was
to wear
another name

shattered now the memory
of where I walked
and when
raindrops fell as glaciers
silver green
worlds without a window
on the way
it might have been –

turquoise steals my breath
and rolls away

planets surely crossed ~

long before I asked
I was warned of wanting more
than a hand could keep
a being could tie down
more than trees
the forest held
stories to the dark
stems
to fill a vase
(to mend a heart)

always there
the evidence
that more had surely been
even words
were left with pages
in the back
the taste of something
never known
weighted on the tongue
and shoes
never fit me
very long

longing spooled
as ribbon
weaved into my heart
vines forever pulling me away
from just enough
content as some
tho I could never be
the same as even one
to come before

beyond the thickest weeds
I slept
in meadows of the gods
searched the sky
for planets
surely crossed
cycles born to wing-ed giants
whispers (leg to leg)
rivers running backwards
to the stone

where was I
before my eyes were open
longing swirled
beyond the fields
I know

a long way from home ~

was another time
tho miles between and far from home
a winter’s night
where blue and grey were stood
in battle stance
kept awake too long
a chilly air
pierced at once by hope
and song
back and forth
where lines were drawn
and boys pretended
men to be
listened to the one
then to another

sang and grieved
but never thought
(for long) to leave
tho many knew
tomorrow would become the end
twas just as this
and meant to be
that others would soon learn
where then the first would fire
(the last would fall)
the loser ill forgotten
to the winner’s sword
no words could say
but writers dared to tell us
the battle told with
drum and violin

til one at last
the two would join
along that length of fence
before the river rose
to take their blood
blue and grey were warmed
by songs of home

In the battle of Stones River Battlefield (1862), 80,000 soldiers met at the river to fight for home and honor. Blue and grey were scattered amid the trees. It was New Year’s eve, and music rose from the drums from one camp and then another –

Yankee Doodle,
Dixieland….

The night rolled on as back and forth they played, knowing the morn would come for many as the last. Around midnight, it is said that the Yankee troops began to play “Home Sweet Home”. Almost immediately, the Rebel band joined as did the voices of those who had come to bear arms.

For a while, no longer were there shades of blue and grey,
just men – fathers, sons, and grandsons – children and old men – the best of us miles away from home.

forever still ~

when twilight comes
quietly as longing
to the dark
would grieve for you
as you might never know
wept the tears
you wish you’d seen
another day
when sorrow begged
the world from you
to differ

how it is – a moment
passed so easy
suspended there
a pretense of the truth
as cold the silver
crevices
dust between the names
sleep to separate
the kisser from the kiss
forgiveness from the one
who longs to hear

forever still
the silence seems so loud
eternities to pass
before we meet
breathe aside this mossy
veil – that I might
understand
words to never
wet the lips
keep us now apart

happenstance ~

what yesterday
decided
of tomorrows
we shall know
had the winter ended sooner
would they have had a son
a moment later
years ahead
and every now is changed
nights
when fate was meant to come
another knew instead
with eyes
were not the same
and for me watching
called to me another name
I never had
but for a star
that made its way
past mercury and mars
was past the call to war
the angels came
speaking of a place
not yet
imagined
a world was dreamed
and waiting us
as sands defying sands
given more to
happenstance
than we could ever know
to find in this
arriving
back to us
we wandered home
