who shall know

who shall know me
when my name is gone –
and buried deep
these withered bones
who shall keep of love I gave –
and speak of me in hush
in silence of remembrance
another birth to pass –

to lean against
the arms of life –
the redbud that I loved
to know her faith is stronger
for summers that we shared
and days I cried
beside her
in the rain

who shall know
and who shall bear the burden
of regrets –
words so few
I kept aside for this
to know my place
of simple grace –
to sleep where few still dream
to walk and never think to them
as someone else I knew
would carry me –
as I shall carry them

let loose
the cause for liberty –
the cause that would be mine
remembered once I moved
between these lines of hurt
and rhyme

who shall know
of nights since passed –
could be I knew me then
was come the road
would take me home –
across these fields again

falling into place

was startled by a dream
(pieces falling into place)
a promise given clarity
as evermore to grace

from birth
a quest for wisdom
came questions still to ask
such pleasure with the asking
each mystery surpassed

and tho the house was empty
but for birds along the wall
(they couldn’t sing)
they wouldn’t sing
were frightened by it all

so taken by insanity
at last I knew the rest
what pages had been missing
scripture burned
of consequence
when someone chose for others
what each should choose alone
would take you there
if mine to do
would gladly lead you home

I couldn’t sleep
the hours passed
as shadows rearrange
what longing knew his way around
was truth I wouldn’t change
always here
I see that now
I’d looked for someone else
was tearing up the covers
searching for myself

twas always here
(I wonder)
who was the woman in the shawl
did I share this fate
with breakfast
a night bird strained to call
who watched me
from a distance
storied arms too weak to fight
taken down
forsaken paths
in shadows of the night

approaching dawn
was Tennessee
far beyond my fears
wallpaper birds now gather
these sacred psalms
to sing

how I miss the moon

I swear sometimes
the truth depends
on what I had for breakfast
and where the shadows knelt
to wait the light
it hurts my soul –
to think of how
forever came unnoticed
alone as I was dreaming –
of where I’d sleep tonight

a time of telling
took so long – destinies rewritten
words betrayed to consequence –
and evermore to blame
I don’t know when
I’ll come again –
(fulfilling every promise)
vows we made at sundown
as to reasons why we came

with all night long
to talk myself
out of understanding
you took the stars
o how I miss the moon

forgiveness seems so easy
tho I wander to the moments
remembered to a place
I keep (within)
love remains despite the age
(lifetimes passed together)
returned as grace
to find us (letting go again)

here I am
the same as love
memories of longing
words have lost their meaning –

the only truth is me

seed from heaven

from that which was
another comes –
much stronger for the breaking
sweet perfume defies
the damaged seed –
leaves go brown
as hearts are mended
the path remembers nothing
but a place to rest
with less
the miles between
hands to touch
one day will worry
with time to grieve –
to wonder why
the weeds have thrived
to take the pasture –
beetles brought
the orchard down
seasons pass
as numbered reason
of where we were
when first we knew –
when first we loved
a moment (glistens)
to light the ways
we walk alone
it won’t be long –
becomes another
will none remain
to speak of these –
when apples fell
as seed from heaven –
and lilac wore
her path to me

in between

in places
held to in between
the twilight
and the deep
there’s a dream I have
and you
are mine in slumber
where pages turn
much slower
snowflakes swirl about your eyes
even now
I taste the sweet
that is your kiss
of violins I never heard
your fingers stir to wonder
and for one endless moment
we are one
wrapped within this fragile night
secrets whispered softly
of where I was
and when you came to me
long before
the sunrise bleeds
and I am pulled to living
I hold you near
and pray the night
be long

evermore to write

I do not want a copper bed,
but a bit of cedar,
lined with patch…
songs I sang
when no one heard,
of a place I (lonely) knew…
I want a pen and paper,
just enough…
a lantern, and a crust of bread…
Let them carry me
at twilight…
barefoot to the meadow…
..to sleep
beneath a crescent moon,
shadowed by my fathers…
a serenade of drums and flute,
oleander and sage…
I want a story barely started…
and evermore to write…

who there to see

Tags

have I resilience
the will of the winds
or a star
born of tears
(nearly dry)
a place undiscovered
resides in my bones –
pages and pleasures
have I –
but not for forever
would I trade (even one)
or relinquish my voice –
my right to the dawn
pastels and passions
are fallen about –
but who there to see
(where you are) –
a way past the longing
I’ve found every one –
the will of the winds
and one faithful star

touch
as to remember
these tender words
resounding
were crippling when echoed to
a curvature of will
reminders of a sweet embrace –
(sentimental pen)
a language we had mastered
in the dark
syllables and sacred vowels
took more than ears
to listen
poems spilled from moments
e’er they breathe
a dialect forgotten now –
a slip of ancient tongue
was never meant to lose
this one translation
read for me
these letters
were settled on my soul
be careful though –
since whispers still remain
as broken glass
we might have saved
when leaned into each other
had not the silence come
to steal a kiss
distracted then
by evermore
words we could have traded
language we had given verse –
would never taste
the same

woman of consequence
lady of shadows
lay with me
stay with me
chase me away
give to my loneliness
the strength of your weakness
fill me with gratefulness-
for guidance I pray
to walk as you have
ten thousand places
near to my own
in silence – my friend

leave with me
grieve with me
I – you becoming
one as was written
with and within

woman of tenderness
lady of edges
grant me for courage
the song of your soul
chapter and verses
the melody changing –
darkness made light
with the colors
of home

woman of wilderness
lady of sorrows
help me to hear
every cry born of need
lay with me
stay with me
I – you becoming
strength of my weakness
help me to see
