my grandmother knew
as grandmothers know
when first they held us to light
something (but who has the words
to describe it)
hush (now the sins of) your heart
take it down
burn the bed
whispering flutters
madness to meaning
though everyone shades (their soul)
from the truth
a sign unexpected
broken and scattered
there goes the star
now ahead
won’t say a thing
about stories repeated
things we might know
(we don’t know)
messages can’t be heard
above screaming
where I am (listening)
grandmother knows
A very insightful and alternative take on a grandmother poem, liked this lots xx
Thank you, Vanessa. My grandmothers were as different as sweetgum and maple, but both gave me invaluable lessons and undefinable strength. Love does that…….. – Love, Bobbie
So many different kinds of grandmothers there were. Some hushed the screams and some told the stories and some just held us until our own hearts could find the way.
You’re so right. I’ve learned to appreciate them much more as I’ve aged, and realized that under their ‘superhero’ aprons, they were just women (as if there were ever just a woman). Thank you! ~ Love you, Bobbie
They always know and knew but that was one other very special traits…beautiful poem!
Dearest Wendell, their dearest trait was their love for us……..hands that had remade the world on little baby at a time. Thank you. ~ Love, Bobbie
Beautiful weaving with special understanding and sight between your Grandmother and you. Very touching. Being understood and loved unconditionally is a great gift. Love, Linda
Dear Linda, as much as many might try to say different, love is always unconditional. If it comes with conditions, it might be something but it sure isn’t love (I was going to use the southern word ain’t because it flows better for me….but didn’t want the message to come across any less important. Thank you, my friend. I hope your day is unfolding as you so deserve. ~ Love you, Me
